NYPD confiscates bikes to protect president

The New York City Police Department continued its war against bicyclists on none other than Earth Day when officers began cutting locks and confiscating bikes out of fear they would be used to kill the president.

The bikes were seized along East Houston Street in Lower Manhattan where President Barack Obama’s motorcade was going to be passing through.

It is not clear how they expected the bikes to be used as weapons, but I would image a simple bomb-sniffing dog would have cleared the threat without as much trouble. And arrogance.

Furthermore, if the cops really thought the bikes contained bombs, would they really be carting them off to the precinct?

Some of the seizures were caught on video.

No warning was given to bike owners prior to the removal and the only indication of how to reclaim the bikes was a handwritten note stating, “Retrieve Bikes from 7th Precinct,” according to The New York Times.

Peter F. Vallone Jr., the chairman of the City Council’s Public Safety Committee, fired off a letter to Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, asking the following questions:

• Why did this occur?

• How often does this occur?

• What alternatives were considered but not used?

• What type of notice was given to the community?

• When and where were the bikes available for retrieval?

• Was this action based on any specific threat?

“Thank you for your courtesy and cooperation and I look forward to your response.”

He has yet to receive a response.

not only did they do this for no legitimate reason, but I’m about 98% sure they are breaking some form of OSHA regulation by using power tools like that on the job without safety equipment or putting up caution signs/cones to re-route the public to prevent injury. Imagine what kind of hell the NYPD would catch if some one got burnt from the sparks or the saw slipped and took off someone’s hand…

“He has yet to receive a response.”

Nor will he.

I’m betting this was less about any perceived “threat” and more about some official saying, “Those bikes make this area look trashy! Get rid of those so it will look nice for the pres!”

If there really was any threat they would not have been heaving these things up on a truck. If I were an officer assigned to cart away bikes that might have bombs, I’d have refused under safety conditions.

What a bunch of morons.

They probably took them home and gave them to their kids or sold them on eBay.

You can bet the city is gonna be getting a few bills for locks… Some locks can be upwards of $150

To me it just looks like an excuse to get payback for finding one of their officers guilty in the bike assault incident.
The actions came questionably close to the verdict.

Agreed. A quick sweep from the bomb squad and bomb sniffing dogs would put any of those concerns to rest. I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be driving a truck full of potential IEDs.

He won’t get an answer any time soon.

It’s just part of the NYPD’s War on Bikes that’s been going on since the RNC.

I can’t wait to see what happens now that the cops won their “50-bike-limit.”

Gee, and here I thought in America you couldn’t have the police seize property without a warrant.

That’s what happens when a system of government gets too big. They feel like they can do whatever they want. Make no mistake, the order for this didn’t come from some bent supervisor in the NYPD, it trickled down from the secret service.

I’m pretty sure if I was suspecting a bomb in a bike, I wouldn’t be using a spark-throwing, gas-engined cutoff tool around it.

But giving credit where credit is due, at least they weren’t cutting the bikes in two and slipping them off the locks.

I eagerly await further reports as to how much it cost the owners to bail out their rides.

When Peter Vallone’s father was President of the City Council he had a lot of power. Unfortunately he could not run for re-election due to term limits (the same term limits Bloomberg overturned so he could win a third term). Even though Vallone replaced his dad on the council, he did not become council president and does not have anywhere near the level of power his dad had. Believe me the NYPD would have responded to his father!

The current president of the City Council is nothing more than a “me-too” lapdog for King Bloomberg.

You are correct. One “hero” has sunglasses on, OSHA does NOT consider this protective. The other “hero” has no eye protection whatsoever. In fact, for this tool the proper PPE is a full face shield. But not to worry, “heroes” are not subject to any law like the rest of us. No, they worry about imaginary threats to the dictator when any bomb dog would detect explosives. Besides, more explosives could be hidden under a manhole, in a streetlamp, or many other items to be found along the boulevard.

“Heroes” are stupid beasts who just obey every order without question. That’s what the USA is all about today. No expectation of any critical thinking on their part. That’s why people who score above 100 on an IQ test are rejected.

NYPD did this because they can. They’ll use the Secret Service as cover — and the Secret Service will use NYPD as cover. Without warning or notification, this is little more than government-sanctioned theft. We’ll never get a straight answer. One more act in the sad tale of Security Theater.

Well, on the bright side the person taking video wasn’t arrested….

Gee! I wonder how long it will take them to start confiscating people? Oh right! They already do that!

Sure, it’s possible to pack a bike frame with explosives and turn it into an IED. It would even be effective… for someone walking down the sidewalk, that is.

For a heavily armored motorcade going down the middle of the street, at least 20 yards away?

Does anyone know how many of these bicycles end up being sold at a police auction?

Well, there was something in the article about the bicyclists being able to pick up their bikes at the 7nth Precinct station. Of course, I’m think’n when you get there you’ll have a helluva time proving your bike in fact is your’s.

Federal law empowers to Secret Service to secure any site the president will visit and gives them command authority and jurisdiction over local PD. The NYPD was simply following orders from the Secret Service. The Secret Service was acting within the law. You don’t like what the Secret Service does, complain to your congressional representatives who drafted the law. The law enforcement officers were simply following orders within the letter of the law.

The Nuremberg tribunal stated that obeying orders was not an excuse. People who blindly obey orders have NO respect from ME. They are totally what’s wrong with this wretched world.

The Nuremburg Tribunal trials are completely irrelevant to this case. Thank you for playing. Try again.

Being a cyclist i don’t like hearing about police cutting locks and taking bikes that will not likely ever be seen again by their legal owners. However, I read the news and read it regularly. The arabs have been filling bike frames with explosives a number of times and are getting better at producing bombs that dogs can’t sniff.

Here are just a couple of links to events that have resulted in mass murder where the devise was integrated into a bike frame:

Still doesn’t fly; bicycle bombs are still only good as anti-personnel and not anti-vehicle much less armor.

And even still, if that were really the concern they wouldn’t have been haphazardly tossing them in the back of a truck.
