Tamron 18-270 - Just about all you need!

For the budget minded photographer, the Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO is just about all the lens you will need. This lightweight compact super zoom is well within the requirements of most photographers in terms of what it can do for the money. It is a great bang for your buck! It is also a fun to use lens for picking out subjects at nearly any distance.

The Tamron 18-270 lens covers a huge range of focal lengths from wide to telephoto. In fact this award-winning lens has the distinction of being the smallest and lightest of super zooms in its class. This is great when you want to travel light and need the range, small size and versatility that this lens provides.

Note: I have been using Tamron lenses for much of my personal work for the past few years and I have been very happy with the optical performance. Please have a look at the gallery above for images I have produced with this lens mounted on a Canon DSLR. All of the images shown have been post processed as single shot HDR using Photomatix, Pro and Photoshop.

So what does the Di II VC LD Aspherical IF and all those letters stand for?

(Di II) - Designed for APS size DSLR use Canon, Nikon and Sony

Low dispersion glass (LD) - Reduces chromatic aberrations

Vibration Compensation (VC) - Reduces camera shake at slower speeds.

Internal Focusing - (IF) - Lens length does not change during focusing.

Zoom Lock (ZL) - is a convenience feature that prevents the extension of the lens barrel when carrying the camera/lens.

Piezo Drive (PZD) - The lens has a very quiet focusing motor.

"15x Zoom Ratio - This lens covers an extremely broad range of focal lengths, from an extra-wide 18mm length to a telephoto 270mm length (the 35mm equivalent of 28mm to 419mm). The resulting 15x zoom ratio is the world's largest, representing a wide cross section of Tamron high-power zoom design technologies. Plus, the vibration compensation works throughout the entire zoom range, giving you the freedom to create a wide variety of images. The lens lets users capture once-in-a-lifetime panoramic landscape images or close-up pictures of children smiling, all without getting too close to the subject or changing lenses. Other details include a macro magnification range of 1:3.5, a minimum focusing distance of 19.3 inches, and a 72mm filter diameter. The lens, which measures 3.1 inches in diameter and 3.9 inches long, carries a six-year warranty."

"Lens description -The acclaimed Tamron 18-270mm VC ultra zoom for APS-C format DSLRs has reached an astonishing new level of compactness, performance, and speed with the addition of PZD (Piezo Drive), an innovative ultrasonic autofocus motor based on an advanced piezoelectric design. The result is a lens that's considerably lighter, and noticeably shorter and slimmer (filter diameter: 62mm) than any previous lens in its class, and provides faster, quieter auto-focusing.

Signature features that have made this amazingly versatile lens the world standard in its class have been retained. They include a 28-419mm equivalent (15X) zoom range, an improved, lightweight, compact Vibration Compensation (VC) system, macro focusing to 0.49m (19.3 inches) throughout, and, of course, superlative imaging performance.

"There is a retro trend evident in current fashion, in the renewed interest in vinyl records, and in smartphone apps that take crisp, high-resolution digital images that look like they were taken with a Brownie box camera and developed in a darkroom. This book is just the thing for retro camera app devotees who want to go a step or two further. Fine-art photographer Neel presents all manner of camera equipment alteration projects, alternative processes, and playful photographic tricks, often combining digital and analog processes. This is a modern guide that incorporates older tools with great creative effect." - Library Journal 12/11
