A sparkling new Speedlight from Nikon

Unveiling the SB-910

Nikon announced the shiny new replacement for its much-loved SB-900 Speedlight this morning; it's the cunningly named SB-910, for both FX- and DX-format cameras (and it automatically recognises which your camera is.)

The controls are supposed to be more intuitive, it has a zoom range of 70-200mm, and there are centre-weighted, even, and standard illumination patterns to ensure that you can get your light just where you want it.

The head tilts up to 90º, down to 7º, and can be rotated horizontally through 180º.

Its buttons have been illuminated so that you can work out what you're doing in the dark and so that you no longer have to fiddle around with gel filters, it supports hard cover plastic colour filters that should be easier to attach and last a bit longer. When you're using an incandescent or fluorescent filter, the flash will automatically adjust the camera's colour temperature accordingly.

Finally, an improved thermal detection system should help you prevent overheating your flashes.

There'll be available from 15 December 2011, costing in the region of £450, $550, or €520.
