Try nude photography!

Exploring the naked truth of portraits with a little extra. Or a little less, if you will.

Picture-51.jpg

As your photographic interests progress, you are likely to try and take photos of somebody in the nude – It’s a very honest and challenging artform, which allows for a level of intimacy far beyond your regular portraiture.

Of course, with the modern world’s paranoia about nudity, it’s not easy to know where to begin, so I’ve written a guide which I hope will come in handy to everyone, and give some insight into the hows and whys.

Needless to say, the photos behind the cut may not be entirely safe for work, but rest assured they are all relatively tasteful.

What it is

Defining what “nude photography” is is far from easy, but the common denominator is that someone in the picture is, er, nude.

The problem with the definition is that people seem to attribute different things to nude. The most important part of an nude photo is that the person(s) in the picture is naked – and that this nakedness has a purpose.

Find a model

Tina nude 2
See Tina Nude II bigger on my Flickr stream.

This is probably going to be your biggest problem. It is difficult to take good nude self portraits, so you will have to find a model. A wife or girlfriend (or husband / boyfriend) might be able to help you out, but the problem here is that you are likely to know this body well already. One of the few exceptions to this Petter Hegre (see the links section below), who has taken an extensive (and very intimate) nude series of his wife – titled “my wife”

My point is that it would be better to take shots of somebody you have never seen naked before. That way, the picture taking process will be as much as an exploration for you (the photographer) as for the viewer

Finding a model can be difficult, especially if you do not have a photo studio or a professional business card (Neither those mean anything, as even people owning both can be psychos, but it helps when talking people into nude modelling). You could, of course, call a professional modelling agency, and offer to do a few nude shoots for new models who need a portfolio, but this is not likely to be cheap. Alternatively, using a online modeling agency such as OneModelPlace, you could find amateur models in your area.

When choosing a model, take somebody who has features that intrigue you. Don’t fall in the trap of picking somebody with a supermodel body – it removes much of the challenge. Instead, you want somebody who is different than average (making somebody who is not automatically associated with “pretty” look gorgeous is a lot more of a challenge than taking pictures of head-turners). A few pounds too much or too little is great.

Get a place

Picture-36.jpgWhen working with nude photography – no matter how much time you spend getting the pictures to look nice, and hiding away everything you would prefer not to show – the models will be moving, and everything will show, to put it that way. What you want to do is to find a reasonably secluded spot to take the pictures. A photo studio is ideal, but outdoors or on location somewhere makes for great pictures.

Make sure that the temperature wherever the pictures will be taken is good though, because remember; Somebody will be naked, and being cold definitely does not help to make people relax!

Take the pictures

Before you take the pictures, you will have to have thought about what you will want to do. Make some sketches, or have the model go through some poses with clothing on, to get some ideas as to where the shoot is going. Let the model have some ideas or set a theme to get going (a big black leather couch and a pale model or vice-versa can be very exciting)

When taking the pictures, take lots of pictures. This goes for any style of photographs, but particularly nude photography. If you believe you got a shot right – take two more just to make sure.

This also means that you will run out of film fast. Great. That means you can take frequent breaks while you load new film. Have a chat, take it easy, have a glass of wine (if the model is nervous, this can help LOTS)

Experiment

Picture-29.jpgTry new stuff. Combine strange things. Have you seen the picture of Atlas? Recreate this with a big beach ball, or a TV receiver set or something. Use candles as light sources. Take black and white or colour shots (whatever you normally don’t). Use an overhead projector or a slide projector to project shapes onto your model.

Examples of nude photography

Jean Valette has several galleries of photos that show a careful balance of light and shadow.

Bodyscapes is a project by Allan Teger: set of photographs where bodies are seen as landscapes. Very clever, very sexy, but not rude.

Petter Hegre is a famous Norwegian photographer who specializes in nudes. A few great art shots, and a few that go to – and beyond – the line of pornography. But the sheer quality of the shots still make them worth seeing.

Michelle7 is a site that has been around for a long time, and offers a lot of different styles of nudes. Not all of it is to my taste, but the site shows off a lot of talent.

Man’s Touch shows off a large number of male nudes

The Art Nudes blog has a daily update of an artistic nude photo – most of them are of world-class standard – sometimes provocative, sometimes a bit strange, but always of very good quality.

Domai is a page which seems a little on the shady side – they keep getting models in that look as though they are younger than 18, although the site assures us that they are all old enough. Never mind that – the photography on Domai is always of extremely high quality, the models are beautiful, and quite a bit of it is very artistically shot.

Flickr is of course another source of nude photos – the “Tasteful nudes” pool is a great port of call for inspiration, mostly photos taken by amateur models, but a lot of it is rather good.

If all of this isn’t enough for inspiration, check out kyphilom’s Human Art links, Mike Sibthorp‘s nude link list. Between them, there are hundreds of links to fine art porn pages.

In 2004 my sister-in-law asked me to do some shots of her while she was pregnant. She was in her last trimester.
She asked if it would bother me if she went topless; no, didn’t bother me at all. When it comes to my art, I take it seriously.
The natural light through the floor-to-ceiling windows was fabulous because we were 25 stories up and nothing around us.
The shots were simple. The bed was the only prop.
I used my Mamiya 6×6 and I hand metered each shot with my Sekonic light meter. I used Ilford XP2. I shot just one roll of 12 (for those who don’t know, medium format film only comes in 12 or 24 exposures).
I was very methodical about each shot. I took my time. I made adjustments with her hair or maybe the bed coverings. I was always looking for things out of place.
I over-lapped two shots slightly offset. I always tell her they would look great in a suspended frame.
We talked and discussed each shot and different positions. This is always relaxing for the model, whether nude or not.
Technically, exposure-wise, they all turned out, however 6 were outstanding (I am my own worst critic :) That is a 50% ratio. Not bad, eh?
So, first and foremost, in order to do nudes, you need to find someone willing.

Did you go to any schooling. I am an amature photographer and the closest school is in Santa Barbara and cost $76000.00. What do you recommend. Thanks, Mistie in Grass Valley

That school is way overpriced....and no you do not need to go there to learn photography. Figure out your particular field of photography and go get hooked up with a leader in that field and learn....you will save all that money and learn a lot faster. Don 702-430-6066

The best way to learn photography imo is to just study lots and lots (as much as you can) of great photography. Try to reverse engineer the lighting setups, look for shadows and catchlights, think about the post work, try to figure out for yourself how the shooters achieved the effect they did and then go out and play! Photography is definitely an art you can teach yourself, especially with all the tutorials and training materials that can be found for free online these days.

@ben:

the best way for some is not the best way for all, sometimes.

having said that, and i meant that in a good way ben, what i do is this. hire females to pose for me nude on a public beach. its great. i get the experience of not only doing the shoot, but get to know how to deal with people on a one to one basis and get some good work done in the process. and doing what you love. Not many people can say they are able to do so.

who said learning photography cant be fun also. i love the beach, nude females cant be all bad, and doing shoots is great all by itself. so add all that together you have a win win situation!

the models are paid $50 per hour for a two hour shoot! its not a bank account killer, and the model gets to be at the beach, working yes, but there are worse locations...working on her tan, and getting paid for it...heya?

anyone else doing shoots like this, i would love to hear back from anyone that is and get some input. or. anyone that thought of doing shoots like this, but maybe didnt have the courage to start alone, the first shoot i did with a nude female model i did by myself, again on that nude public beach.

Hal,

My start in this business was very similar to your own. The day I decided to become a photographer for a living I went online to look for models, I found one gorgeous creature with whom I negotiated a rate of $600 for the whole day, we did some shooting on a nude beach and then some in a forest etc etc

We became friends after that and for the next 6 months or so she posed for me for free. We eventually dropped off each other's radar but I went on to hire other models (for a lot less money once I could show that I knew what I was doing and could take a decent shot) and went on to make a living out of it.

Like you said, the beach is nice (as are rainforests, lakes, streams and other natural locations), being surrounded by beautiful naked women is nice - earning a living from it is just icing on the cake!

Cheers,
- b

hal

Ben:

yes, those other locations are also nice, part of what i was thinking was, when i started shooting nudes, i first did tfdvd so it wasnt like i didnt know how to deal with people. this is a must if your going to do nudes! crawl before walking as it were, then the "public beach" so that at the first few times you can relax more as it is a public place and all. i think you know what i mean.

now about those places you mentioned, wish i had them all close to me but i do not.....lol

beach is one, and a few other natural locations, so it ain't too bad. i will in the future shoot other places other then the beach, but for right now, the nude beach is about the only location you may shoots nudes legally. i sure hope that changes within my lifetime, but i dont think it will.

you mention the time you did one shoot, $600 for the day, about how many hours was that shoot, just wondering. one more comment then i am finished, i think every photographer should do at least one nude photo shoot even if its just to see how it feels to shoot the human form in all its beauty and splendor. [i hope i spelled that right...and i don't mean with a p/s.] :)

You may have a go using my photos. I am a fairly well known and internationally collected nude photographer. I have sold pieces from a gallery in NY, but my largest art market is those wanting to hire me to shoot their figure before they are too old and surgeons.

To the above commenter, Mistie. For the most part I am self-taught :) A couple of night courses (a less costly alternative) helped me refine a few things, but otherwise I learned everything myself. When I started photography in 1991 I jumped in with both feet; it turns out I have an affinity for seeing things differently :)
In the beginning I started with black and white (very forgiving when it comes to minor mistakes :) I read a variety of magazines & books (in fact I still do, I always pick up little things); I taught myself about exposure and composition; I took notes of all my shots (all done with a Pentax ME Super, nothing fancy, and I still use it!) and had them critiqued by professionals (always helpful); I talked “shop” with other photographers and learned little tricks of the trade; I experimented with shots; but first, and foremost, take *lots* of photos! Don’t be afraid, it’s the only way you’re going to learn :)
And of course, with the advent of the internet, there are many places to get information and “talk shop” with others.
Remember, these are the elements which bring focus to a photograph:
- breadth
- depth
- theme
- point of interest

In your 4th paragraph, I'm pretty sure you meant "art photography" not "act." I love the articles in this site, but I catch a lot of gramatical errors.

Another great erotic photographer who is well worth checking out is HUDSON|manilla. He's the only UK photographer featured in the recently released 'Mammoth Book of New Erotic Photography'. It features work from the worlds top erotic photographers.

His work although erotic is very tasteful. Check out his website at www.hudsonmanilla.com or blog at hudsonmanilla.blogspot.com. I believe he is a Lightroom user; I for one would be interested to see if Pixiq could get him to do an article on his techniques.

if i had more money i would shoot more, so far i have done about 5 shoots of the following:
video/images of a female model, on a public nude beach. for anyone that hasnt done this and has been into photography for a few years or so, i suggest trying it, you will learn alot about shooting and dealing with models at a level you havent done so yet.
please spare everyone and dont do this type of shoot with a P/S. and if you havent done any type of shoot with any models yet, do a few first then, maybe, get into doing these types of shoots.
oh hell you wouldnt jump into the deep end of a pool without learning how to swim, would ya?

You might let your readers know about http://www.editorialnudes.com where you can learn about nude photography from the author of five photography books, that be me ;) Thanks, Rolando

Your photos are not like true life. Nude is nude. Why don’t you show the body the way it was meant to be shown? When people get back to nature, what else matters?

I am working on a book of fine art FigureNUDE photographs. I have completed roughly the first third and it will be published in perhaps a digital format before it is available in print. You can see a few of them at FigureNUDE.com. Would you guess that any were done by a paralyzed, disabled artist from a wheelchair and involve photos of at least one disabled model? Haji; -let me know what I can do to help.

one of the most imp part of capturing, with camera now or with thousand year old sketching on walls and caves, or the paintings some four centuries ago to date, it is one of the most imp part of human imagination and attachment to female form by nature, that the art persists and will go on because this beauty cannot be seen anywhere on earth, even the most delicate of flowers will lag behind in front of the female nude form, so kudos to those artists, painters and photographers who brought them live thro their medium.

I have been an advanced amateur photographer all of my life. I’ve been published in magazines, newspapers and books but had never taken nude photographs until 2007. I friend asked if I would take some nudes of her and I agreed since it had been a life long dream. She was in her mid-thirties, beautiful blonde hair, slightly overweight but willing to learn. I have read articles over the years of how to take nude photography but this was my first chance.

Since my model was willing I was over the first hurdle but I found that most everything that I had read was useless when it came right down to the shoot. The two of us worked together well and since I was shooting digital and not film the shutter button was almost worn out that day.

In the end we had well over 200 shots in the camera and, together we looked over the pictures on the computer. It was a learning experience for both of us. She was very happy with the results as was I.

We trashed about 40 of the pictures for various reasons but what was left was a nice group of excellent quality pictures.

She was so pleased that she entered ten of them in an on-line photo contest and won third place out of probably 800-1000 entries, not bad if I do say so myself!

What I learned from the experience is most of the stuff you read in books is common sense; lighting, composition, etc. You really get your education from doing an actual shoot and then being objective about the results. Having a willing model is a big help so find someone who is comfortable with their body. A little coaxing may be needed at first but you will get there. My model had a thing about keeping something on but when I finally talked her into getting completely nude she was thrilled with the feeling and said “This is the first time I have ever been naked outdoors and it feels wonderful.”, as the warm sun bathed her body.

So don’t sit around reading books and dreaming! Find a lady who is willing and learn together! It’s just like any other hobby. You can read every book written on a subject but until you actually do it you aren’t learning anything. Learn by doing.

Good luck to all you want-to-be’s out there. Keep the pictures tasteful and learn from your mistakes but remember you aren’t going to get those nudes in the camera reading books. Get out there, take pictures and LEARN!
