And the lies continue to mount in the Maryland police beating case
As we’ve seen happen so many times before in police brutality cases, evidence against the Prince George’s County police officers who beat up a University of Maryland student has gone missing.
ABC 7 News is calling it a “bizarre coincidence.”
University of Maryland police called it a “technical error.”
Let’s just call it what it really is: a flagrant cover-up.
Although the citizen video that the world has already seen should be enough to convict those cops of felonious crimes, the attorney for student Jack McKenna subpoenaed video from 20 surveillance cameras in the area to strengthen his client’s case.
And he received all the videos except the one from the camera that was pointing in the direction of the beating that left McKenna unconscious with a concussion.
When the media inquired as to why that particular video was missing, University of Maryland cops blamed it on a technical error.
“The server that manages those cameras automatically overwrites at a certain point, and it just overwrote and it didn’t give us a opportunity to copy this particular piece,” Williams said.
But then the video miraculously appeared. Only for it to be missing two minutes of crucial footage.
This time, campus police had no explanation.
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the campus cop in charge of the video surveillance system is married to one of the cops on horseback that McKenna supposedly assaulted before he was assaulted himself.
So now the Maryland State Police Department is investigating whether University of Maryland Police Lt. Joanne Ardovini deliberately deleted the footage to help her husband, National Capital Park Officer John Ardovini, who is named in McKenna’s suit.
Or was it, as the article asks, “merely coincidential”?
I think we already know the answer to that question.
But let’s not hold our breath for the Maryland State Police Department to conduct an honest investigation considering they are the ones that retaliated against a 24-year-old motorcyclist who uploaded a video of one of their officers recklessly pulling a gun on him.

Just when you think it can’t get more disgusting…How are we, the people who allow the police to have their power, supposed to trust them when they continue to spew bullshit lies that a six-year old could see through?
We all know that the Maryland State Police are known as one of the most brutal, corrupt, and notorious law enforcement agencies in the United States. They are famous for “misplacing” evidence. Maybe they have been giving the University of Maryland Campus Police some pointers?
I’m surprised I’m the first one to say this, but get that Seattle hacker on the job. This guys lawyer should be calling him for advice on that.

Ok, so the 2 minutes that is missing, are they actually trying to say that it vanished on it’s on? That doesn’t happen you know, someone had to delete that. How stupid do they think people are?
Put these guys in touch with this guy.

I should be surprised, I know I should …
Didn’t Nixon already try that trick? Look what happened to him.
Wow….do they even try anymore?

Wow. I guess I’m just gonna stay outta Maryland.
In light of Eric Rachner’s case, I hope McKenna’s attorneys will know to request the logs from the U of M’s video surveillance system. Perhaps they would tell whether Lt. Joanne Ardovini took action to protect her husband.
Techology is catching up with the cops. I think we’re learning that a) Cops hate transparency, otherwise we’d have unfettered access to state evidence such as video; and b) Security through obscurity doesn’t work, coppers.
You can only hide behind the blue wall for so long, until the courts catch up.
Yeah, its called the “Rosemary Woods” gambit.
Aggravated assault
Perjury
Falsification of a police report
Tampering with evidence
Police brutality
False arrest, false imprisonment
The most disturbing thing is the Blue Wall doesn’t call out these oinkers, but protect them as one of their own. They are ALL tainted.
You can’t trust the cops to investigate themselves. That’s obvious.
There needs to be an independent entity that looks into this kind of thing.
This sort of case should AUTOMATICALLY go to the state attornery general’s office, but then again, MD is such a small state they probably all know each other and a real investigation comes on a wing and a prayer.
Doesn’t the FBI investigate cop crimes?
We need a federal PRIVATE citizen review board and we need it now.
I think the FBI is involved in this case.
FBI is still cops investigating cops.
Hey Carlos,
A similar case of deleted surveillance footage in Brooklyn-
http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/brooklyn/cop_link_in_tamper_bust_IDLW...
One minute was deleted, apparently to the benefit of the off-duty cops and firefighter involved in the brawl. They arrested the surveillance technician, but an attorney on the case believes the security camera technician is friends with one of the cops. (Perhaps he was “encouraged” by the cop’s coworkers.)
Background on the brawl-

Cops have been using and abusing video surveillance for decades… finally it’s catching up to them.
There’s a reason they’re called PIGS.
Hey Carlos, you’re mentioned in a Reason article again. Plus it’s a pretty good article on this and the motorcycle incident:
http://reason.com/archives/2010/04/26/watching-the-detectives
Sooner or later the public is gonna be pushed too far and some cops are gonna get handled… Just look art other countries… If these cowardly, loser cops can’t handle a little job stress with more professionalism they need to find a new career. We need higher standards when recruiting police officers… Quit hiring these losers that hardly made it out of high school and have no other job outlets.
Most cops would be serving time if they were cops themselves. These pussies ganging up on a defenseless, un-aggressive, un-provoked college student make me sick to my stomach.. What a bunch of cowards.
Carlos, Radley Balko has mentioned you at Reason.

“We need higher standards when recruiting police officers… Quit hiring these losers that hardly made it out of high school and have no other job outlets.”
I’ve been saying this for years. At the root of the problem is the hiring process. Nobody should even be given an APPLICATION until they’ve gone through a psychological evaluation.
Theoretically yes, but they are not the same unit. They don’t know each other personally and are much less likely to try and “cover” for local officers.
Josh Saint Jacque´s last blog ..Excellent Video on The Consitution and the Patriot Act
Video doesn’t work
Did the Maryland State Police get their hands on it?
That’s sorta the whole problem
I was making a joke about the link MacK posted. Liam said it didn’t work.
There needs to be a nationwide citizen’s organization that has the authority to bring the hammer down on dirty, violent cops.
Charge them criminally. Take away their badges and guns and throw them in the same pesthole prisons where they put us.
I disagree. We need judges who are not gullible shits who’ll take every word from an officer’s mouth as gospel. If the system we now have actually worked this ugly stuff would not be happening.
It is simple. Do NOT trust them. And raise your children accordingly.
From my perspective every officer that was on that block witnesses a crime and have not yet reported it. This kind of insanity will only stop when those chosen to enforce the law have to live by the law. When all these cops are fired & prosecuted for failure to report then and only then will society begin to have faith that there is something to serve & protect instead of randomly beating citizens.
Abuse of power and status. What the hell is so new about this people? Haven’t we stood by and let this kind of stuff happen all the time? Instead of blaming and constantly whining that people are abusing their power and position, why not do something about it?
The thin blue line knows no boarders or agencies.
If he bleeds blue when cut, he will be backed no matter the agency.
We need a citizen review board consisting of Computer experts, Private security experts, and legal experts to review all questionable actions, and we need it before the public starts to riot over these incidents.
That’s exactly what Carlos is doing here. By raising people’s awareness to what is going on he’ll generate support for getting this abuse under control. We can help by sending this website address to everybody we know who owns a camera and expressing our dismay.
I do that all the time.
It suprises me just how many proffesional photographers are unaware of this site or the problems with the police.
It boggles the mind.
Even if the other evidence wasn’t enough to convince me of the officers’ misconduct (and it is), the fact that the tape was temporarily lost, and then recovered with a section of footage “missing,” makes them look SOOO guilty it’s not even funny. This needs to go before a jury as a criminal case of tampering with the evidence.
I actually bought a pocket video cam with a 3MP resolution and 45 minutes of record time and carry it with me at all times. There were too many times where I saw things that I wished I had a camera to record. Including police brutality. Someday I might actually need it to protect myself. Cops are out of control in America.
The advantage of a phone’s camcorder is that you can share the video immediately. I’ve heard several stories about cops demanding that people turn over their camera or delete pictures. If I caught a cop breaking the law on video, I could hit share and e-mail the video to my lawyer the moment he turned his attention to me.
Place the ones who did it in jail. Demote every cop and downgrade the pay of every cop show saw it and said nothing. The most important thing to do IS fire the Chief of police and any supervisors involved. Better yet place them in jail, for conspiracy to deny this man his civil rights.
What will it take for these abuses to stop, dead cops in the street?
Thugs come in all kinds of uniform and dress, and ALL should be delt with as rabid dogs.
I’m not suggesting that anybody resort to such a thing but DAMN there just does not seem to be any reasoning with some of those people.
Dum ass
If there was any justice in the world, the cops involved would be lined up against that very wall, doused with gasoline and set on fire. Dirty thugs.
