Another clip from the upcoming HDNet episode

HDNet posted a preview of what we can expect in its 25-minute episode of photographers’ rights, which premieres tomorrow.

In the above clip, we can finally see what took place after I entered the Douglas Road Metrorail Station with a camera that fateful day.

We can see the female security guard immediately order me out of the station, even though I had paid my fare.

And we can see the beret-wearing male security guard slap the camera out of my hand and confiscate it, refusing to give it back after I repeatedly asked for it back.

Obviously, photography was really not banned at the Metrorail because nobody made an attempt to stop us from entering the station with cameras during our successful photo protest.

Tomorrow’s episode will feature an interview with Tasha Ford, the South Florida model who was arrested for videotaping cops arresting her son, as well as a segment on Anthony Graber, the Maryland man facing 16 years in prison for uploading a video clip of a cop pulling a gun on him.

Below is a cut-and-paste from HDNet correspondent Greg Dobbs detailing tomorrow’s episode.

Our program “World Report” airs tomorrow (Tuesday) night. As always it is on at 9pm Eastern time, 8 Central, 7 Mountain, and 6 Pacific. Then it airs again in each time zone three hours later. If you have a high def TV but don’t know where HDNet is on your set, you should get us if you’re on DirecTV, Dish Network, Comcast (in most but not all of the country), AT&T Cable, and most smaller (but again, not all) cable systems in the US and Canada. Sometimes we’re listed in the on-screen guide as “HDNet,” sometimes shortened to just “HDN.”

If someone doesn’t have high def or otherwise can’t watch HDNet, here’s another way to see the piece: by each Wednesday morning after each Tuesday night, you can download our program to your computer (in fact you can download every World Report episode from the last two years) from the iTunes store for a buck-99; if you’ve never done that before, it’ll involve a one-time visit to a page where you put in secure credit card information. Here’s how to go about it:

1. Go to
2. Click on the logo on the right side of the page that says “Download on iTunes”
3. Once the store appears, don’t do anything; it should automatically go to a select number of episodes of World Report. You will see a small grey scroll-bar on the right side; scroll to the bottom where the latest episode should be listed.

The first clip you provided didn’t really show just how instantly they reacted to your presence with the camera. I’m anxious to see their whole story

So Big Mac Beret there walks up, steals your camera, and then demands that you not touch him?

Isn’t that being something of a bold mugger?

Beret_Guy straight up commits a battery on Carlos while on camera, steals his camera, and then says “don’t touch me”.

I don’t think I could have remained as calm as Carlos did.

Man I’m really looking forward to this! I’m glad we finally got a chance to see beret boy taking your camera away from you. I was curious as to how it all started. I’ve never watched HDNet before, though I’m going to start. Very professional.

By the way, have you been able to recover your camera from them yet?

Yes, I did get the camera back but it’s damaged to the point where it shuts off after a minute of recording.

After seeing how it started, I’m glad you slugged the guy, he deserved it. Keep it up CM.

Thanks for showing the start. I must say you held your cool very well.

Heh, he actually said, ‘Don’t touch me, bro!’

Nice piece, although I don’t see anything “provocative” about Carlos’ behavior here.

I hope there will be some alternative source for viewing this. HDNet is not available as a regular channel and as I don’t have an HD TV I don’t have any reason to maintain an HD subscription on DirecTV.

Great and professional piece with the whole incident captured and most especially the jerk who smacked your camera out of your hands then told you not to touch him. That guy is a the definition of a dick.

Have you had any answers given about all these incidents?

On a side note, I ride through that station every weekday and most weekends. I haven’t seen either one of those guards since this incident. I have seen the first guard that confronted you in the parking lot and clocked out, but he didn’t say a word when I took a pic of him sitting by the elevator.

“Yes, I did get the camera back but it’s damaged to the point where it shuts off after a minute of recording.”

I strongly suspect the security company will be funding your next camera purchase.

Where in the world did you get that shirt?

Carlos, I trust you are attempting to recover the cost of your camera that was damaged in this incident??

Carlos–have you gone to the police and asked that Beret Guy get arrested (or at the very least issued a criminal summons) for assault and battery, theft, tampering with private property, etc?

He totally needs to get charged with something.

Carlos,

Do file a claim for the damage to the camera with “fitty-state” security’s insurance carrier ASAP.

I gotta admit that after seeing this video, the dude in the beret was a doofus. I may have to rethink some of my comments on this one. I can debate if they have the right to ask you to leave, but they don’t have the right to sneak up on you and snatch your camera like that.

He was pretty funny with the “don’t touch me bro”.

Interesting video overall.

Ad the wig to that shirt, now that is a fashion statement!
You handled your self very well, better than I would have. Do not let some of the idiots here put you down, you were attacked with out cause and had every right to deck the fool. I believe the term is self defense.

Now what’s wrong with the shirt?

Is pink a little too feminine for you?

Maybe that’s why the guy felt he could assault me.

Next time I’ll wear my Raider jersey.

I do think you are handling this whole thing brilliantly. Especially the touch of humor, get people to laugh at them, that hurts more than any thing.

No problem, hell I wish I had the guts to. I like the touch of whimsy.

Carlos, as I mentioned to you over lunch in Miami, seeing the first part of the video dramatically changes what followed.

Although I still believe that from an entirely protest oriented view point it is better to just take it on the chin. I do, however, believe that from a moral and legal perspective your use of force was entirely legitimate.

Outside of an advocacy situation, I would agree that the security guard deserved a serious ass kicking. As an agitator and as a firm believer in the right of self defense it’s a tough call. Either way Fifty States looks like a bunch of ass-hats.

Carlos;
I like the shirt, as I said I wish I had the guts. As to the guard, yes that may very well have been a part. Who knows what lurks in the depths.

The security guard escalated the situation when he touched you and slapped your camera out of your hand. At that point you could’ve put him in a nice headlock till he learned to behave like a good boy.

Carlos,

A lot of people seem concerned about the assault of the security guard on you and the destruction of your property. Did you pursue that at all?

As this must happen often, what is the normal process a person has to follow to take action? Do you just take these losses on behalf of exposing the terribleness of these people?

Carlos You handle yourself very well and very calm. Seeing the video I felt like hiting the security man. I am very proud of you. Your Mom

You should have called 911 and sworn out an assault and theft charge against the brown shirted thug who denied you your civil rights. It’s not too late. If I were you I would get an attorney and I would contact the federal civil rights attorney. You owe it to the rest of us this crazy thug will surely attack someone else and may get away with worse with no camera to show the truth.

Watch the male security guard’s right hand after he assaults you. He almost pulled his weapon.
an aside: I’m not from miami – why do they need armed rent-a-cops at a non-central rail station?? seems like an absurd waste of money to me. I’d wager the cost of repairs due to vandalism as well as lost revenue would be less expensive than multiple guards. (their company probably bills them out at ~15-20/hour each).
