Caddo Lake

A day on Caddo Lake is a special day any time of the year.

Last weekend I had the chance to make a quick trip over to the mystical lake that's the largest natural lake in Texas. Virtually all Texas lakes are man-made save for this one. There's a handful of reasons as to what caused the lake like a big log jam near the Red River in Louisiana or the result of the New Madrid, Missouri earthquake from the 1800's.

Either way, the lake is more like a big swamp. While there are big areas of open water, a lot of the lake is backwater sloughs that's lined in moss-draped cypress tree and covered in lily pads.

 And wildlife abounds...

On my brief trip, we saw nutria, beaver, otters, and all sorts of birds. Had we have stayed a little longer, there's no doubt that we'd have seen ever more. The place is simply amazing.
