Canon has patents for new macro and T&S lenses

The new 50mm from Canon is probably a Macro. And there are patents for a new 35mm and a T&S 90mm.

A new 50mm f/2.8  macro lens for full frame format is one of the recent patents from Canon, along with a 35mm f/2.8 semi-macro and a 90mm f/2.8 tilt&shift with 1:2 capability.

The patents for new lenses have just been published and suggest that there is a new macro option for Canon, represented by the 50mm f/2.8 with macro capability at 1:1. This new lens might well be the replacement for the old EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro launched in 1987 and that, in fact, although classified as a macro lens, offers only 1:2 (.5x) magnification natively and needs to be coupled to a Life Size Converter to attain 1:1.

After the launch of the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 for APS-C bodies it seems Canon as decided to offer something of the kind for full frame bodies, so the new 50mm f/2.8 macro the patent refers to has a real 1:1 reproduction ratio, an interesting option for people that want a 50mm capable of working in low light levels and also to be used in macro. And it will offer USM, something the original 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro lacks.

The second lens with a patent is an interesting 35mm f/2.8 semi-macro – meaning it can do 1:2 reproduction ratio – a lens that coupled with an APS-C can offer you a real 56mm f/2.8 semi-macro.

The third patented lens is a new version of the Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8 Tilt-Shift , the highest optical performing lens in its class in the Canon stable. According to the information available, the new 90mm f/2.8 will be able to do a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:2 natively, a step forward considering the previous model.
