Casio scales back UK camera production
Casio isn’t perhaps the first firm that you’d associate with camera manufacturer, but they have been at it since 1987 and they have a fair few compact cameras on the market. It was Casio who introduced TFT-LCD screens to cameras with the QV-10 and the Exilim Pro EX-F1 shoots at a mind-blowing 60 frames-per-second. However, in an exclusive statement to Amateur Photographer, Casio has come out and said that owing to a ‘decline in the digital compact camera market’ they’re scaling back production and distribution in the UK.
Casio were keen to point out that they’re not halting production completely and that you’ll still be able to buy Casio cameras, but that fewer will be made and that they won’t be available from quite so many distributors as they are right now. Who will be still be stocking them, though, hasn’t been clarified.
A ‘decline in the digital compact camera market’ hey? Is this the first casualty of the ubiquitous camera phone? The sales figures for compact cameras have been on a steady descent since 2009 (although mirror-less and dSLR sales are on the up), so maybe it was only a matter of time.
