CBS interviews 15-year-old girl beaten by Seattle sheriff's deputy
Her name is Malika Calhoun and she appeared on national TV with her father Monday morning to give her version of the story that lead up to a King County Sheriff’s deputy viciously beating her inside a jail cell.
M. CALHOUN: He first, when he first came in, where I kicked the shoe off at him, and I was about to take my other one off, he said, you know, it’s assaulting an officer. And that’s when he charged in and started beating me. And I was yelling. I was like, this isn’t — I’m not resisting. I’m not resisting. And he said, whether you’re resisting or not, that was assault.
Then he just kept doing it and kept going and going.
CHEN: Why did you kick the shoe off at him?
M. CALHOUN: Because my arms were folded, and I was upset with the way he was talking to me. And I was talking back to him. And I just took it off. And I was ready to take off my other shoe, and then that’s what happened.
CHEN: Did the shoe hit him?
M. CALHOUN: No, it didn’t hit him at all. I was standing in the inside of the door, and he was standing holding the door open. Didn’t hit him, and he was saying that it made blood pockets and stuff, and it didn’t even hit him at all.

Watching the video, I noticed that it looked like the shoe bounced off of the door and hit the cop. But it’s ridiculous for the cop or anyone to think this girl assaulted him. Considering she was giving him some attitude, the cop could have just intimidated her a bit and let that be the end of it. But what he did after that was just blatant and ludicrous. Both of those guys had her pinned down and he’s punching her in the back of the head.
I’m no angel and have spent my time inside a jail once or twice. It used to be you didn’t want to get locked up because of the people inside the jail (among the other more obvious reasons) but now it seems like the incentive to stay out of jail is to not be some jackass’s whipping boy.
Is the girl a Muslim? I understand they like throwing shoes at people they don’t like. Maybe it was a cultural practice that should be respected.
Interesting how the cop reacted so quick, too. Bush’s secret service stood there and let the shoe flinger get off a second one.
Besides, what’s wrong, really, with beating up teenagers? Especially when they’re in restraints.
The video link above appears to just loop an Ad. There is a long version of the surveilence video available at
http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid1526070353/bctid14391606001
this version shows what happened before and after the assalt on the girl. Note that she does not appear the least bit scary or threatening either before or after the assault. Gotta love these big brave gestapo cops.
