Digital Painting: Quick Tip for Blender Brushes

Using Paint Brushes as Blenders

One of the quick tricks with Corel Painter brushes is customizing brushes so that brushes that paint with color become brushes that paint as blenders and brushes that are blenders will paint with color. It's a simple setting change and a very popular one.

The Acrylics Captured Bristle brush (Acrylics is the Category and Captured Bristle is the Variant) is an especially versatile brush to work with this technique. The default for the brush under RESAT control is 60. At this default setting the brush lays down thick color.

Change that default setting to 0 and attempt to paint on top of the color already laid down and it will become a wonderful oily blender brush.

This is especially handy to do quick paintings using only one brush with many different settings for it.

To test this with a Blender Brush go to the BLENDERS Category of brushes and choose the variant GRAINY WATER. (The only difference between Grainy Water and Grainy Water 30 is the size of the brush) Change the RESAT from it's default of 0 to 75 and you will see that now the Blender has become a cool watery type of brush laying down gentle amounts of water. Test the RESAT to your preferences to get the exact amount of paint you want.

This has been a quick tip for brushes and you have just learned quickly that the brush setting RESAT means how much paint is actually on the brush. Picture a real paint brush with paint on the brush. NO paint on it would be spreading paint that has already been put on the canvas on your easel. A little paint would be a little RESAT and a lot of paint would be a higher RESAT setting with dripping paint on it.

This technique is explained in detail in lessons in my book and is used in various lessons throughout the book.
