Don't Blow Them Away!

How to Use a Fan for Great Photographs

One of the best props to always have handy in your studio is a fan or wind machine.  One mistake I often see is the fan being used at too high a speed or blowing the subjects away.  A little fan is great but a lot of wind can destroy your images and leave your subject feeling out of sorts.  Too much wind can dry out your subjects eyes and cause them to start tearing.

The best way that I have found to use a fan is to have it on a low setting so it gives the hint of movement in the hair without distracting from the shot.  When I have an extra hand around I will let my assistant move the fan on and off my subject so the hair moves and falls giving a more realistic look and feel to the fan.  Experiment to see what works best for your subjects.  The other plus side of using a fan is that it makes your subjects feel beautiful and when they feel beautiful they look beautiful.

The images shown are made using one light, the profoto beauty dish and a Sony A900 with the 85mm carl zeiss lens.

Good Luck!

Very nice, I only wish there was a very portable battery operated one for wedding photographers.

Very nice, she looks like a model and models should create their own web on http://www.myegoo.com
