One of the newest technological advances in today’s (mostly point and shoot cameras) is face detection.

Cameras with face detection attempt to identify people in a scene (using complex algorithms), focus on the faces, and adjust settings to render the people in the pictures correctly.

Most often this technology works very well.  Most snap shooters will allow the camera the freedom to take over the focusing tasks and this has improved the percentage of well-focused and properly exposed images.
