Featured Pixiq Photographer: Joanne Urban
On her way to another career, Joanne Urban discovered photography quite by accident. For many years, she worked as the lead printer for a custom Photo Lab. Now a veteran traditional wet darkroom printer, she transitioned to the digital darkroom eight years ago.
Well versed in both black-and-white and color printing, Joanne integrates her darkroom knowledge to create her current work using a flatbed scanner to capture images. Her experimentation with the scanner rivals that of large format printing. Often compared to photographic masters of the past like Edward Weston, Joanne's images are soft, ethereal and often mysterious. Her use of the scanner allows an intimate examination into the life, the texture, and the natural character of the chosen objects.
Her work has been widely exhibited in galleries, photographic publications, and books. Her highly sought after prints are in many private collections. Joanne currently lives and works in South Florida where she provides mentoring, tutoring and printing services. Inquiries about Joanne’s work can be directed to: bwprinter@me.com.
