Former Cop Selling Dashboard Cams for Citizens

The BarryCam is designed to protect citizens from cops

Barry Cooper, a former star narcotics officers turned pro-marijuana activist and internet salesman, will be selling a dashboard camera that can be installed in your car to protect you from cops during traffic stops.

The camera, which will conveniently be available a month before Christmas, seems like it captures high quality video and audio.

And it apparently can be rotated 360 degrees to capture what is going on in front of you as well as inside the car.

But there is one caveat.

He is asking buyers to upload the videos they shoot to his website so he can offer his “personal analysis.”

Personally, I'd rather have those videos uploaded to Youtube or any othe site, then to my site where we can all offer our personal analysis.

But maybe this is just a suggestion and the video would not be built in a manner where we would have to depend on his site to upload it.

Because if that's the case, then the camera will be restrictive and possibly worthless.

At least one commenter on the Boing Boing article stated that he didn't trust Cooper because he had a "douchey sleazy used car salesman vibe" - among other issues.

There's something about that guy that just rubs me the wrong way... He's got this douchey sleazy used car salesman vibe, selling mail order dvd's and cheap chinese webcams.. It's all so gimmicky. It just seems like he's in it to make a buck, not actually giving any really useful advice, not having a whole lot of knowledge on the subject, just saying over and over again "I used to be a cop".

Apparently he's a bit of a sleazeball with his business practices too... A legitimate educated marijuana activist gave a negative review of his DVD's, to which he threatened lawsuits.

That comment prompted Cooper to respond with his own comment, stating he is nothing but  a hard-working family man on the verge of becoming a Hollywood star, even if he does have an annoying habit of spelling cops with the letter k:

I can tell you don't know me. There is a reason Bret Ratner in Hollywood is making a movie about my life. I have an Internet reality show called KopBusters where I bust crooked kops and our first sting resulted in Yolanda Madden being freed from federal prison. I've been retained as an expert witness regarding police misconduct 6 times and won all 6 cases for my clients. I have 3 cases pending. I just flew back from Florida after teaching two large lawyer conferences. Judge Napolitano recently endorsed my KopBusting efforts on FOX news. The advice I give in my video series, NeverGetBusted, has saved thousands of people from going to jail. Go get this issue of SKUNK magazine. I'm featured in it. I speak with the owners of Cannabis Culture Magazine, Marc and Jodie at least once a week.

Loretta Nall is the lady who wrote that bad review four years ago and it's the only bad review out of more than 50. That should tell you something about her review.

I have four kids. Two of my daughters are in college at the ages of 14 and 18.

I'm not those things you say I am.

What have you done for the movement?

So Cooper, if you happen to read this, please send us a picture of the camera because I did not find it on your site and please tell us if we can just upload the videos to our own sites for our own personal analysis.

Most of us on this site haven't been cops, but we've seen enough videos where we can make a pretty accurate determination ourselves.

Plus, we have Johnny Law who would be more than happy to give us his professional police analysis of the video.

Below is a picture of Cooper duking it out with a pig. I guess he's trying to tell us something.

14yo daughter in college? Wow, and I thought we were doing good at 16yo. Somehow, I don't buy it. And remember he is an EX-cop. I wonder why he is an EX. Is he a modern day Serpico or somebody who can't even maintain the low, low standards cops have?

I use a MUVI camcorder, which I have clipped to the mirror. I've held it discreetly in my hand several times without issue, although not with a cop.

Hmm...I have heard of this guy. It's one thing to be against the war on drugs and be professional about it like the officers in LEAP. It's another thing entirely to be some grandstanding loudmouth.

I would love to hear about why he left the PD and what he was like as an officer.

Ahhh the typical response. The veiled implication that he was a bad cop, possibly a dirty cop....and from another cop no less.

This is why there are no "good cops", the good ones are force out leaving only the bad ones and those that cover for them...like our own Johnny Law.

Cooper served eight years on the force, but after he was caught doing an overzealous search of a black man’s underwear, looking for drugs, his department was sued in federal court. The department settled, but Cooper left the force anyway, frustrated and angry that his superiors hadn’t defended him. He bounced around for a few years after that, opening several used-car lots, founding a church and even starting a cage-fighting business. But his life truly changed when he fell in love with his present wife, Candi, and began smoking the substance he’d spent years arresting people for.

I hope at the very least the cam comes equipped with a fake "erase" button for when a cop takes this cam & attempts to erase the footage you took of him. Also... some kind of protection scheme in place so the cop cant actually erase the footage. Like say.... hitting a button (or combination of buttons) a specific number of times to gain access.

I would prefer a dashcam that doesnt actually LOOK like a dashcam. One that is hidden. That way the cop doesnt even know he is being recorded.

I doubt very much the camera has some kind of drm so that video can only be uploaded to his site. This guy wants to SELL and that is a real deal killer. It will be interesting to see what quality the camera is and what he is asking for it.

Do a Google search for dash cams and you'll find a lot that will do the job...

I'd like to purchase a dash cam that held the hard drive in a LOCKED BOX so they'd have to get a warrent to get into it.

Even better, tie it to a G3/G4 unit that will upload the video to YouTube in real time, so it doesn't matter if the thug-in-uniform gets a warrant or not.

I'll make a positive comment about Barry Cooper - I've watched both of his Never Get Busted videos, and actually consider him a personal hero. I've followed his career for a bit, and know the persecution he's faced for what he's done (and it's much more than having a camera taken away). My father was a drug cop for several years, he too saw the corruption but never made a transition to actually making a difference in the community. I believe Barry Cooper has made reparations for his time as a drug cop - quite admirable. Even further, the view point of Barry Cooper on Law Enforcement is distinctively unique from the traditional academic viewpoint of the ACLU or NGL - Cooper provides the real deal, the real story.

I have followed Carlos Miller's blog for some time, and I'm happy that Miller picked up on this story. It’s too bad that Cooper’s character has come so far into question, as his actions are very noble.

All of our cameras can be uploaded to your PC or Mac. You may upload the footage to me for the analysis but you don't have to.

And soon, anybody can upload a video for my review whether the footage was captured with a BarryCam or not.

Peace,

Barry
