Fox News' Bill O'Reilly Has Confrontation With Videographer
Bill O’Reilly, one of the most arrogant and pompous broadcasters to ever take to the airwaves, believed a man who ran up to him with a video camera Wednesday night might have had a knife.
So the Fox News anchor shoved an umbrella in the man’s face.
According to the Talking Points Memo:
Branden Lane of Milwaukee, who is part of a group called Wisconsin Jobs Now and was in D.C. as part of the Take Back The Capitol movement, told TPM he was standing outside the Willard when someone pointed out O’Reilly walking out of the hotel. He followed him, camera in hand, asking him if he was Gingrich’s fundraiser.
“Leave me alone right now,” O’Reilly tells the man.
“Mr. O’Reilly, were you at Gingrich’s fundraiser?” Lane asked.
The video then shows O’Reilly’s open umbrella hitting the camera. “Sorry about that,” O’Reilly says as the wind flipped his umbrella inside out.
O’Reilly tried to persuade a police officer to arrest Lane, but the cop did not pursue the matter.
TPM compiled the above video with footage from the incident as well as an interview with Lane and O’Reilly’s statements on Fox News where he calls for a law to prevent people from running up to him with a camera.

What a huge story.
At least you got your feelings out about the most popular broadcaster on tv.
If someone ran up to me I'd be leery, as well.
Your own story says it was windy enough that the umbrella was whipped inside out, that a policeman was there and didn't apparently see anything O'Reilly did as wrong.
Great opinion piece disguised as "news".
You should start a political blog and put this type of stuff there, imo.
I knew it would be seconds before my right-wing readers would start bitching about the article.
Of course you wouldn't have said a thing if I had said the same thing about Keith Olbermann.
O'Reilly may have over-reacted a bit, but Olberman is a joke in every aspect. I enjoy this site very much; Id be quite disappointed if Olberman was someone you look at and appreciated.
I am not attacking or defending Olberman..but he did expose this issue that I would say is far from a joke.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNCj9Cz9iOI
I find Olbermann overbearing but I agree with his politics.
O'Reilly is somebody I want to punch in the fucking face. And not just because of this incident, which was minor.
Wow, and you find Olbermann overbearing.
I think you have a little growing up to do.
I don't know carlos, I'm pretty right wing.. And o'reilly is a blowhard.. And he's occasionally right.. Just like the talking heads on the left..
Looking at the video I pretty much have to dismiss Bill's perspective.. Could have had a knife.. So.. Did he have it in his hand? Somebody laying in wait could to.. Then trying to get the guy arrested was nothing shy of BS..
You run up to me I'm going to be a little cautious, if I see something in your hand that has any likelyhood of looking like a weapon more so, I'm not going to be thinking about our political views at that point.. With that said, I see some pretty stark differences between those situations and the one presented in the video.. O'Reilly was in the wrong and there is an arguable case that he assaulted the guy with his umbrella. However, I could see a jury go either way on the totality of the circumstances..
So yeah, lefty, righty, act bad and I'll call you to the carpet, my view of fundamental fairness demands it..
Here is the easy test I use.. Switch the names to someone you LIKE, is it still fair? If not you need to rethink your position.. Be honest with yourself and you keep yourself from being a hypocrite.
If you think I wouldn't write this article if it involved somebody I liked, then you haven't been reading my blog too long.
I might not have described the person I like as arrogant and pompous, but that is my opinion of O'Reilly before this incident.
That wasn't the point I was trying to get to, that you wouldn't write about poor behavior from people you like. I have been reading for a LONG time, several years, long before you moved to Pixiq. I agree that you were going to take shit for your views on O'Reilly by those on the right. However, I don't really care if you are a lefty or a righty if you are actind badly. I will admit when I hear about politician A or B getting into trouble for Y I do openly hope that guy is a democrat, why? Because I'm not ok with those in my party acting improperly and it saddens me when it is one of mine. So bias? maybe.. Honest about it, yeppers..
You know what? Even when I was a brainwashed republican and I listened to Rush,Hannity,Boortz and Savage EVERY DAY
(gag) I still couldn't stand O'Riely! His arrogance is repugnant.
O'Riely and Olberman are just shills for the New World Order Globalist.Their rhetoric is different but they promote the same globalist agenda by fanning the flames of the false left vs right paradigm.
These are the same people who believe government only runs great as long as the other guys aren't running it.
Imagine how politely the crews of Inside Edition must have approached their prey when O'Reilly worked for that heap of dung.
Next to the politician and the fundamentalist thumper, it is hard to find a creature on the planet more odious than the media pundit.
Moral of the story is to not run up to a crazy man carrying an umbrella. How can you know if any person you do not know is not a crazy with a knife, or a gun, or a grenade? I guess I can use that defense to do anything I want now that precedence has been set ;^)
"Moral of the story is not to run up to a crazy man carrying an umbrella." ahahahhahahahha! to funny!
Imagine how politely the crews of Inside Edition must have approached their prey when O'Reilly worked for that heap of dung.
Next to the politician and the fundamentalist thumper, it is hard to find a creature on the planet more odious than the media pundit.
Eh, this really isn't an article that should be on your blog Carlos. It's barely related to photography rights. Sometimes posting nothing is better than posting garbage.
O'Reilly thought this guy should be arrested. This guy did nothing besides record him in public. This article is completely relevant to photographers rights.
I think you've grasp the essence of the matter.
Hey Fluid, let me add you to the growing list of people I have to run my article through before I publish.
Hey Carlos, I'll add pixiq to the list of websites I quit visiting because their owners got too damn full of themselves. It's gotten to the point that your attitude and over-the-top bias outweighs the news value offered.
Hey Duard,
Then go fuck yourself.
Stay classy Carlos, buh bye.
Geez, Carlos, why do you always have to sugarcoat everything? Don't be so oblique; just tell it like it is!
You welcome comments and this is how you respond? Curse out someone for their opinion who doesn't post in a vulgar way at all, and claim others want to dictate what you publish? I guess this being a "Comment" area is not true.
Please delete my account. I do not see a way in the account settings.
Bye bye
Later
The problem is CM, if you aren't posting smoking guns then it hurts the movement of keeping police accountable for their misconduct.
Yeah, this isn't even an article about police misconduct. It's barely an article about OReilly being bad. I thought it was not newsworthy and commented as such. I am not one of those right leaning readers who come here to "scout the enemy" or give you grief. I really do think this sort of article hurts the movement. You can run your blog however you like, but perhaps you are a bit sensitive to constructive criticism.
Constructive criticism? Dude, don't make me laugh.
I called Bill O'Reilly an arrogant and pompous ass and all his fans got all offended. That's it.
All those articles I wrote about the Occupy activists attacking photographers had nothing to do with "police misconduct", but you weren't bitching about that.
Look guys, I really don't give a fuck whether you agree with my political stance or not.
And I really don't give a fuck whether you agree with what I write or not.
And frankly, I really don't give a fuck if some random anonymous reader who has left three comments in total announces he is no longer reading my blog.
I really just don't give a fuck about any of it. My blog will survive regardless.
Grow up Carlos. It may be your blog, but the cause you purport to defend belongs to all of us.
I used to visit because you were kind enough to aggregate the news on the abuse of photographer's civil rights. Lately it seems you'd rather pick a fight or spew political bias. You do us all a disservice and hurt the cause by acting like a vulgar, spoiled child.
Why is it I'm not surprised that your bio crows more about being arrested than listing actual professional accomplishments. Getting arrested and missing deadline is easy. Getting the story and avoiding arrest in the face of ignorant public servants? That's professionalism.
Now that I've registered and said my piece, kindly delete my profile. I've been a shooter long enough to know a train wreck when I see one.
Kent, it's good to see I finally wrote something that enraged you enough to actually register and comment.
But it's a little sad that it ended up being a piece where I insulted one of the most polarizing men on TV.
But if you think that is what is going to lead to a train wreck, then you obviously haven't been riding that long.
Nice try, but anyone who reads my comment will see that it had nothing to do with left vs. right, politics. That's your little link-bait game not mine. My objection involves you hurting the cause after riding it to your brief brush with notoriety.
Your last comment reveals more about you and possibly Pixiq's plans than you realize. You may not classify trading your integrity for trash-talk-generated traffic as train wreck, but I do. Especially when that sell-out hurts the cause of holding public servants accountable.
I noticed Pixiq has a flashy advertising brochure available for download. Funny, I don't see a lot (any) ads on the site. I wonder why?
So Kent, what do you suggest I do to help the "cause"?
Not write about O'Reilly when he assaults a videographer?
Or maybe not call him arrogant and pompous because that would be spewing political bias, something O'Reilly has built a career on?
Or maybe I should just remove my opinions entirely from my posts to hopefully increase advertising for Pixiq?
What exactly is the "cause" in your mind, Kent?
Do what a journalist is supposed to do, Carlos. Present the facts in an unbiased and professional manner and let them speak for themselves. Outrageous and/or illegal behavior is shocking enough on its own. Adding personal vitriol only dilutes the impact with those who disagree with your opinion.
Kent, this is a blog. I mix opinion with fact. I've done it from the very beginning. And I hope my readers are smart enough to differentiate the two.
BTW, you asked earlier about my "professional accomplishments."
Reversing my conviction in an appeal as I represented myself is one the proudest moments of my life - especially considering only about five percent of appeals are successful when they are done by an actual lawyer.
But maybe you meant my resume. I spent four years as a cop reporter in the Arizona Republic, which I see you also worked there.
I also worked in several other newspapers in the corporate media before I saw there was no future in it and got out, including the San Bernardino Sun, the Las Cruces Sun-News and the Tucson Citizen.
But this blog is not about that. This blog evolved from my arrest, which is why it is mentioned in my bio.
Congrats on the conviction reversal. I assume you showed more respect in court than you have in this string. Many have suggested you tone it down. Your response to most has been childish and vulgar. It's your blog, you can do what I want, but, because you have put yourself in the position of representing all of us in keeping law enforcement accountable, I feel we have the right to tell you when we believe you do us harm.
Now go ahead and get in the last word. I've said my piece with good intentions and respect and I hope you take it to heart.
Fair enough, Kent. Maybe I should not have used the word "fuck" as much as I did.
And I don't mind when people disagree with me. It happens all the time.
I just get a little irritated when people say I should not have written something in the first place. This is a First Amendment blog, after all.
So if I would do it again, I would do it exactly the same. Except without so many F-bombs.
"There should be a law"
There is Bill, its called the Constitution, would you like me to send you a copy..
And you are a celebrity which means you have fewer rights in most cases.. You ability to win a libel or slander case is substantially harder..
As it is there are too many laws.. And somehow I just don't see how you could write a law to handle this case that would survive 10 seconds in court.
Ok I just watched the video again and it's actually pretty darned funny!
Thanks to the officer for having the composure not to arrest the journalist just because a big shot told him to.
What a thin skin. O'Reilly sends his producer to video ambush people all the time.
It's apparent Bill O'Reilly is a liar, wimp, and a hypocrite. Startled my a**.... he just didn't want to be on a camera he couldn't control. Woe is me!
The LT didn't take it further because no crime was committed!
This story illustrates the main reason to not be famous. Fame is always a liability; fortune often is too.
Carlos - Your assumptive-ness is embarrassing, frankly. YOU are the original poster taking a left wing jab at O'Reilly in your post.
YOU then apparently are frustrated by people who have a different view expressing their opinion.
You are all for freedom of speech, right? Mine, yours, O'Reilly's?
As for Olberman, I support anyone I agree with, regardless of Party. I am not aligned to anyone or any party. I support Maddow in her aggressive tear down of Obama yesterday:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7mwP5Di5NE&feature=player_embedded
I find it so humorous that liberals think that republicans or the right wing are anti-free speech. Ever heard of the fairness doctrine? Hmmmm, which party supports this?
Unions are all about freedom of speech, right? LOL. Which party supports the unions?
Liberals stand on the constitution, when it fits their needs. Right to freedom of speech, an abortion, etc. But forget that silly second amendment. You either accept all of the constitution or none. One cannot cherry pick what amendments or parts of the constitution they like.
Liberals are all about regulations and rules, having the government make the world a safer and better place, in the governments eyes. Republicans are all about having as little government in one's life as reasonably possible.
What frustrates me is when people dictate to me what does and does not belong on this blog.
I make those decisions. Nobody else.
Yes, I took a left-wing jab at O'Reilly. I really couldn't help myself there. And I did it knowing full well some of my right-wing readers would get all butt-hurt about it.
My readers are always disagreeing with me in the comments section and I've always been cool with that.
But as I admitted, I get a little touchy when readers whom I never met, whose names and whereabouts I don't even know, come in here and tell me something does not belong on this blog.
If you don't agree with what I write, then state your case. But don't try to play my editor.
"YOU then apparently are frustrated by people who have a different view expressing their opinion."
Pot call kettle black. Aren't you the one calling out Carlos for his opinions on HIS blog.
You're an idiot.
If I had to be a fan of a political pundit, I would probably choose Dylan Ratigan.
But I would write about him just the same if he assaults a videographer.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIcqb9hHQ3E&feature=player_embedded#!
Carlos, it is your blog and it is usually one of the first sites I visit. Thanks for what you do. Please remember that it is always much easier for people to sit back and criticize something that others have accomplished rather than to actively do or create something themselves. You create and they whine.
I am an independent voter with generally left of center views and I am constantly amazed at how people react to non-political events or writings by acting as if everything has to be defended in terms of extreme, radical and emotional "left" or "right" absolutism. I wonder about their lack of tolerance and their personal insecurity and how it makes them politicize everything in extreme terms. I agree that O'Reilly is an absurdly arrogant and overbearing personality who presents more opinion than fact. I also agree tha Olbermann can be "over the top" but that his presentations are not totally devoid of facts or logic... Your original article appeared to be about an event involving how O'Reilly reacted in a non-political occurrance and without comment or judgement by you as to politics, so I find it amusing that your more extreme readers took it as a political attack.
It is also sad to see that people with such vitriolic and extreme reactions hide behind cute little names. If they were intellectually honest and emotionally secure then they would be brave enough to use their real names.
Thanks for your service and keep up the good work!
Sincerely,
Tom Jannusch
Looks to me like he was putting his umbrella in place to block the camera and the wind flipped it, which made it hit the camera.
Looks to me like the umbrella was damaged by him deliberately striking the cameraman, not by the wind at all.
His blatantly insincere "hey sorry about that" supports my interpretation, imho.
The article is related to photography's rights and this is what the blog is about. No need for raaders to be upset when they do not agreed with and article......
Come on folks, lighten up! It's Carlos' blog and he can do whatever he wants. I am thankful SOMEone is posting all this shit the cops are pulling on those who want to document them. It is important as HELL. If they block us from this, what's next? We must have proof of their illegal doings. If that means the occasional humorous "non-photographic" jab at one of the biggest assholes in the world, so be it! Anyway,O'reilly is not to be taken seriously by anyone who can think. He's just a moron. Washington, D.C. has many of them.
Nothing to see here folks, move on.
Remember, the First Amendment applies to everybody, as long as you agree with them.
