Growing your business: second lesson
Written by a non-photographer this might be the best photography business book a photographer can read
Your Creative Mix is not a photography eBook but might help you to be a better photographer. Because it teaches you the business side of that circus.
Exactly one year ago Craft & Vision launched Growing The VisionMonger, 10 Things a Manager Can Teach You About Running & Growing Your Business by Corwin Hiebert. Now, 365 days after, the author returns with Your Creative Mix - Growing Your Photography Business Through Creativity & Collaboration.
No, it’s not the same book. But the target is the same. Those photographers that usually keep doing the same mistakes: either waiting for the work to come to them or shamelessly self-promoting their work. Corwin Hiebert is not a photographer; he does not know the difference between a f/stop and a bus stop (well he does, but this does sound funny), but he knows a lot about photographers, because as a consultant and manager to creative entrepreneurs he has come to pay special attention to the unique set of challenges facing vocational photographers.
Corwin Hiebert finds “extremely interesting” that photography is an art form as much as it is a commercial service. And he says that “entrepreneurs across the board are notorious for pouring their blood, sweat, and tears into their new work but they don’t put their intimate creations on the line (and online) quite like photographers. For the photographer, success in business requires a balancing act of creating and selling ones art; I have great respect for those who can survive this circus show. “
So it’s for all those that the friend and manager of photographer David duChemin wrote this new eBook. Which starts from the same point as the previous work but goes exploring new ideas, pointing a lot of fresh options that can be taken. Corbin Hiebert writes that “my belief is that inspired photographers will thrive when they stop attempting clever marketing tactics and instead simply work to attract fans to their creativity. In other words, stop whoring photographs just to get a few bucks; instead, create curiosity in your work and story. Let your creativity be your marketing strategy. I believe that when our personal creativity is fully explored and we’re willing to share the experience in the context of community, our creative business will be happy and successful.”
So, this is the goal of this eBook: show that there are new paths to get your message around. The author hopes that after reading the eBook each reader will be “happier and more successful as a vocational photographer”, “growing your passion for art, honing your creative skills, and finding new ways to connect and share with likeminded people”. It is that blend of personal and public creativity that he calls Your Creative Mix.
The eBook is divided into two parts. Corwin Hiebert says that “the first section is dedicated to the internal elements that make up our personal creativity (because where would we be without a healthy and active creative spirit?). The second section is aimed at generating, developing, and communicating new ideas within the context of community (because we didn’t get here alone and we’re not going far on our own). I believe that vocational photographers need to focus on these two areas in order to thrive.”
Now that you’ve been shown the tip of the iceberg, go for the whole of it. And believe me, this is not your ordinary business book for these web days, with lots of SEO tricks, and strategies sold thousands of times. It's not even a boring Excel page with numbers. This is a different trip that will make you rethink all you have been doing up until now.
