HDSLR Invasion of the Commercial Industry

Are HDSLRs invading the commercial industry?

The other day, I landed in LA on my way to attend the photoCine EXPO where there was lots of discussion about how HDSLRs are being used all around the TV/Cinema industries. To get to my hotel, I took an airport shuttle and the ride on the shuttle was surprisingly quiet until about 3 minutes before we arrived at my hotel.

A woman right behind me received a phone call. She was talking about budgets on a TV commercial she was working on and then the conversation switched to a new commercial. Not hearing the other side of the chat is frustrating at times, but her side was interesting to me. Right as we got to my hotel, she asked the person on the other end what kind of equipment they are planning to use... "Red? Why Red? Why not use the 5D? It is so much easier to use than the Red." And then it was time for me to leave so I didn't hear the rest.

My takeaways ... first, she was flying into Los Angeles on a hotel shuttle so I suspect that she isn't local. I would have expected that kind of conversation from someone in LA (though realistically, there are still a LOT of people who don't really know about the HDSLR revolution yet), but it does indicate that HDSLRs are infiltrating many industries in a positive way. Also, she sounded like she was on the business side of the industry because she was so focused on the budget conversation, but maybe that's just because she's a producer? I wished it wasn't time to get off the shuttle so I could hear more. So if she's on the business side, what does that say about how pervasive the HDSLRs are?

What I was most amazed about really was that I heard the conversation in the first place. Here I am going to an HDLSR conference and I get to hear this random conversation about the TV commercial industry and there is a mention of the HDSLR revolution in a hotel shuttle.

Revolution indeed.

Now, if she'd mentioned my site planet5d.com, I would have been in heaven ... maybe she did after I left the van? Hey, I can dream, can't I?

I work in post production in the commercial industry. I can personally attest to the number of commercials being shot on 5Ds and 7Ds. We get a ton of them. For the most part, they hold their own and are quite impressive. In a few instances, where the DPs don't know what they are doing and expose wrong, color correction can make the footage a bit noisy, but I'm sure readers of your site already know that.

Me myself, I am a Nikon shooter, and would love to help Nikon get their foot in the door in the production world, commercials, music videos, whatever. Please check out my petition, that is meant to bring awareness to Nikon and their engineers as to what they are doing wrong.
