Hillsborough Deputies Once Again Prevent Reporters From Doing Their Job

Ryan French, the Tampa news videographer who had a run-in with Hillsborough County deputies last week, reports another incident where deputies did not respect the rights of journalists.

Essentially, police shot a bank robbery suspect at his home, so when reporters arrived to the scene, they were ordered to stand a block away from where the crime tape had been set up.

They eventually got smart and moved in towards the crime tape, sparking a discussion with one of the deputies.

A public information officer was called and everything was sorted out.

But it's pretty absurd that deputies believe they can keep reporters away from the crime tape. The whole purpose of the tape is to let citizens, including journalists, know where they are not allowed to enter.

There is no reason why they need to be kept further away from the tape.

Maybe they were doing something wrong and didn't want a photo of it.

They only got cooperation because there was a group of them and they were affiliated with a news agency. Rest assured if it was some citizen who wanted to take video for his blog, even if it was a popular blog the treatment would have been very different, probably resulting in arrest if he had insisted on his right to film. While it's nice to see the official news media granted the rights they already have I would like to see the police extend that to citizen journalists, who legally have the same rights as the mainstream media does.

Stall tactic

They know they are wrong, just looking to buy time to get improper things done off camera so they don't get caught.

Yeah we need that extra time to plant the guns.

*rolls eyes*

That's what happens when your to stupid to slip em your backup piece.

*raises middle finger*

Do I think they were planting guns? No, it's unlikely. However, that is the point. The police unnecessarily restricted access while they did their jobs.

Bad cop, no doughnut.

Are you trying to say that never happens?

@brian:

i have a suggestion for a traffic stop!

It would be me and whomever, and we would be stopping all COPS, we would be looking for anything that could be used to leave at scene of shooting making it look like the SUSPECT had a gun..or whatever!
to answer your question, i believe it does much more then anyone would care to admit! [I can hear it now, "he was a scumbag, he deserved to die anyway, and for a COP that has served for so many years with a spotless record to go down for this? the shooting was BAD, but we shall cover it up! no one will ever know!"]
anyone that doesnt think it happens, is either on drugs, or is part of the problem......A COP!

Hahahaha!

Yeah that blurry video certainly shows that some turd who ran from the police had a gun planted on him. Makes perfect sense to me.

C'mon man. Even the voice doing the narrative even says that you can't tell what the officer had. If you are convinced that easily, I bet you really get excited about Bigfoot videos and UFO reports.

And people say that I am biased...

Police Caught Planting Evidence On Homeless Woman

Watch as the two cops signal each other to put pot in the guys pocket.

" Oh carlos you got another charge."

This is only two times they got caught, how many times has it been done and not been caught, from the cop to top the caste system is a bunch of crooks.

You should always use a throw down knife. You see, guns get too expensive and they have those pesky serial numbers.

*looks around for black helicopters*

Keep telling yourself that it happens all the time. Utter nonsense but hey, if it makes you feel like a freedom fighter....

" Is it a gun, is it a knife
Is it a wallet, this is your life .... 41 shots "

Throw down gun who needs a gun or a knife, you just have to repeat the speech that you've only got milliseconds to deside to save your life or you partners life and you felt afraid. *pat pat* On the wrist, D.A. slides you $100 and say go have a drink on me with your buddies.

JL.. are you on the Brady List?

Who's this "we?"

*rolls eyes*

They were either grossly incompetent and devoid of any knowledge of their job and the law, OR they were hiding something. They were obviously covering something up or they are just plain stupid.
Their is no excuse for this kind of behavior you would think with public service sector unions being attacked. The police would have common sense enough to start policing themselves. They are just to far gone to help themselves at this point, and it will only start to get worse, as people start to revolt, against this revolting behavior.

"But the same problems can be seen all over the South, from Miami to Mississippi to Alabama; and the same nationwide, according to Paul Craig Roberts, a former editor of the Wall Street Journal and former assistant secretary to the treasury under Ronald Reagan, who wrote recently: "Police in the US now rival criminals, and exceed terrorists as the greatest threat to the American public." http://www.newstatesman.com/north-america/2011/04/orleans-city-jail-police

so let me see if i got this straight, some COPS over in the TAMPA area of FLA. want the following:

two tapes restricting access, one yellow tape for the public/anyone without a camera.
and one yellow-tape, and further back for the PRESS/MEDIA!

can that even be legal? one suggestion for the COPS, make the two TAPES different colors. EXAMPLE-yellow for the public, red for the MEDIA/PRESS!

An original idea.  That can't be too hard.  The library must be full of them.So make an ideal life with new ideas.
