How many columns do you see on this site? (poll)

I’ve been getting reports of people who use Internet Explorer that see only two columns on this site with the third column pushed down to the bottom of the page or something to that effect.

I use Firefox and sometimes Safari and I see three columns, but when I logged on to my laptop, which is a PC and not a Mac, I saw two columns on IE but three on Firefox, which is what I use on that.

So I’m wondering if this affects everybody who uses IE. And I’m also curious as to how many people use IE. Feel free to elaborate and maybe even offer a solution.

What browser do you use and how does it affect my site on your screen

When I go to your site using IE, the third column doesn’t show up unless I scroll way down.

When I click on a post, the third column is at the top.

I usually use IE.

I have no problem when I use firefox.

However, the automatic playing of the video from a previous post is tiring.

Check the right ‘float’ or the ‘margin’ set on the middle column, something is ‘blocking’ it’s placement and I’d hazard a guess at some content you’ve added recently on the index page (shows up to the right on the comments page [here] so it’s unlikely a general problem).

Thanks, Karl. I just got rid of that damn video and linked to it instead.

I replaced it with a photo of the lying officer.

Hurm. Yet one more reason to not use IE. I fired up IE for the first time in months (I use it only for verifying my own code displays properly in IE as well as Firefox) and noticed that your site’s 3rd column is pushed to the bottom on my pc as well. Not too familiar with CSS unfortunately. I’m bit of an old dog and insist on using outdated HTML for most of my sites.

Our site is no longer compatible with IE. Anyone who remembers “browser” history recalls the liberties that Microsoft took against the wishes of the W3C. The later’s hope was that all browsers displayed content the same and that’s why there were standards. All other browsers seem to work just fine.

in FF 3.0.8, Chrome 1.0.157.53 I see 3 columns on the homepage, and individual post pages.

In IE7 I see 2 columns on the homepage, and archive pages, but 3 columns on individual post pages. The 3rd column starts all the way on the bottom of the posts in the middle column.

It’s also not a screen size issue (but your site isn’t liquid, so it shouldnt be anyway)

I don’t think it’s something you posted, more likely it’s been like this forever. (Unless you changed something in the css/php/js recently).

It looks to me like it’s a margin/padding issue with the middle, or the right column (i’ve had margin/padding issues with IE not showing them correctly)

As to your question, I use FF, Chrome, and IE7, on Vista Ultimate SP1 x64. I usually use FF, but i’ll switch it up every so often depending on which one I have left open.

Does the issue depend on IE version? Maybe modify the poll to allow specification of version, or ask people to post details. Don’t have IE, can’t comment further on that. FF and three columns.

Seems to be a common problem. I’m going to see if I can remedy the issue with what it says here.

Yeah you’ve got a problem in IE, right column drops, at least on the homepage. Quick diagnosis: CSS problem. A bit of tweaking with the CSS columns will probably put you were you want to be. Not a frequent reader, but StumpledUpon this page. Email me I can probably help you out here. Incuded the wrong email, it’s “spenwint” at…

Hey Carlos-

It’s almost certainly the width of objects in your center column, or the police photo at top, which appears to be wider than the container holding it. Chances are, in CSS you have a center column width of X, and your images or something in the center column are bigger than X.

For example, I notice that in IE, your ‘Breaking news from Chelsea’ image actually expands very far to the right, into the space where the sidebar would be. In Firefox’s case, it seems to be expanding the “table”, while IE is wrapping the right column below the middle one.

When you click on an individual post with IE, the column now fits, but the header with the police photo is still messed up and out of alignment with the borders above it, and is not centered on the page.

I would try shrinking your police photo by about 25 pixels (width), or try using smaller in-line images in your center column.

Hope this helps.

Edit: anywhere you have a fixed-width item, like a picture, try shrinking it and see if that helps. It may be that the images in your left or right column are too wide for their containers, which is making all of it too wide.

the banner at the top of the page is in a different container (or should be) than the “columns” below it.

it’s perfectly acceptable web design to lay out a page that way, as well. see, oh, any website made in the last 15 years.

IE is a broken browser and people should not use it for anything. including online banking or school.

I use FF3 on my PC, and some odd version of firefox on my nokia. It’s mozilla based, that’s for sure. your site displays fine in 800×480 pixels, so it’s obviously a browser issue, rather than OS or Code.

Best thing I can offer you is to add one of these snippets of code to your CSS file.

Thanks Edwin,

I implemented a couple of the codes, including the pop-up people will get who are using IE 6.

Just wanted to drop a note. It seems as though the issue is being blamed on IE6, but the homepage also renders incorrectly in IE7. Thanks for the site. I just found it by accident while surfing reddit, but good stuff. If this is redundant info, please wipe the comment.

Hey Carlos, I’m a friend of Scott (ipanemic) and came across your site after your excellent posting of his video. I’ve been going through your archives. Excellent stuff.

I myself was arrested in 1993 for videotaping a man/woman saying a prayer on a public sidewalk because I accidentally stepped into a court-ordered buffer-zone. That case went to the Supreme Court (abortion-related) and was thrown out eventually. Of course, not until I served a year of probation… ha ha. So, I’ve always had an avid interest in this type of thing.

Then, just a few nights ago, some rookie cop doped up on ‘roids pulled me over and made a huge scene (which he proudly announced he was videotaping from his patrol car). We’ll see if he has the chutzpa to produce that video, because I think you’d find it hilarious.

Anyway, the reason for my comment: I noticed that your IE6 warning still appears, even though I checked it out in IE8. There are some pretty neat tags that IE has implemented for IE8 that you could use so that only IE6 users will see that warning – and not IE7+.
