One of the things I learned from photographing weddings was that there are a ton of obstacles when capturing images of groups.

After getting past lighting issues, posing, and getting everyone to pay attention, it can be very frustrating to find results littered with forced smiles and unnatural expressions. Here’s a quick tip to try next time your photographing a wedding group (or any other group for that matter).

Tell the group you’ll be taking a few images to ensure you get a good picture.

Count to three, take a shot, pause for 1 second, take a second shot.

The second shot will find most of the people in the group will have relaxed smiles as opposed to forced smiles. It won’t work every-time, but I’ve had much success with it in the past.
