Today one of my interns asked the mega millions questions.  "Why do you need a light meter" and then, "how to you make a white background"?  Her thought was she could just look at the histogram to make sure it was within the proper range, but then you might as well spend your time working on lotto numbers for the New Jersey lottery.   

The benefits of using a light meter go far beyond simple knowing you are within the proper range.  To make sure the light is even a light meter is essential and to know exactly where the light is falling and adjust it so it's perfect can only be done with a meter.
