"If you get too close to me with that camera, I'll take it out of your hand and ram it down your throat"
The irony in the above video is that the man hired to protect the courthouse from “terrorists” is the one doing the terrorizing by making violent threats against law-abiding citizens.
“If you get too close to me with that camera, I’ll take it out of your hand and ram it down your throat,” he told videographer George Donnelly after getting in his face.
I would like nothing more than to see that man eat his own words.
The incident occurred Thursday outside a Philadelphia courthouse where demonstrators were handing out jury nullification pamphlets to members of the public.
Jury nullification is when a jury acquits a defendant in a case although the written law may actually prove his guilt. It is when the jury sides with common sense over common law.
One of the demonstrators was Julian Heicklen, who was arrested last year for smoking marijuana in public. Anybody who believes in personal freedoms should not criminalize a man for smoking weed, despite what the antiquated laws state.
As the group was handing out pamphlets, several men in coats, ties and walkie-talkies approached them, asking them what they were doing as if it wasn’t already obvious.
The men asked the demonstrators for their names. The demonstrators asked the guards for their names. Neither side wanted to provide their names.
It doesn’t appear that Pennsylvania has a “stop and identify” law, which even if they did, it would require an officer to detain them under reasonable suspicion before he can arrest them for refusing to provide their names.
And it is not even clear if these men were law enforcement officers or just security guards. Either way, you would think that departmental or company policy would require them to identify themselves when asked.
It appears as if they were just security guards although they are wearing some type of badge.
And one guy kept demanding “why are you here?” which was pretty evident by the signs they were holding up and the pamphlets they were handing out.
And the guard, of course, brings up terrorism as an excuse to harass the demonstrators who were only exercising their First Amendment rights.
So while the guards are trying to sort out the dilemma by speaking to their superiors on the walkie-talkie, one of the guards gets in the face of the videographer and makes his threat.
“If you get too close to me with that camera, I’ll take it out of your hand and ram it down your throat.”
Donnelly has a little more patience than I would in that regard because I would have welcomed the sonofabitch to do so.
And we would see who would end up with the camera down their throat.

Shouldn’t he press charges of some type?

Last I checked, no, PA is not a stop and identify state. They sounded like they were just security, since they said they would let the marshals handle it, it being a federal courthouse and not a county one (where sheriff deputies do that sort of thing, at least in this part of PA).
I would agree, though, charges should be filed, and it should’ve been brought up when the city cops showed up (though maybe it was and we didn’t see it). I myself probably would’ve retorted with an equal threat and had the pleasure of eating concrete.

Carlos, you make my day. You have the best stuff on the planet on your site.
Fantastic! and really sad at the same time.
I actually just finished watching the entire video now.
At first, I was so enraged over that one asshole that I had to put it up quickly.
The actual cops that showed up were pretty cool except for that one idiot who tried to say that they were “interfering with the investigation.”
But that one sonofabitch who made the threat should be charged with assault. And without a doubt, fired from his job.
Somebody please provide his name.
This video demonstrates the importance of not talking to police, ever. Notice how they didn’t give the cops their names. It stops them dead in their tracks, because the police don’t get to play 20 questions. Those people were very, very smart.
These people were indeed very smart. They remained calm, cool and collected through the entire thing. Even after a threat of violence, they kept on filming and remained polite. Awesome.

Gotta love the jury nullification folks. So many people just have no clue what it is or how to use it.
William C. Goodloe, Chief Justice of the Washington State Supreme Court, circa 1988; suggested that the following instruction be given by judges to all juries in criminal cases:
“You are instructed that this being a criminal case you are the exclusive judges of the evidence, the credibility of the witnesses and the weight to be given to their testimony, and you have a right also to determine the law in the case. The court does not intend to express any opinion concerning the weight of the evidence, but it is the duty of the court to advise you as to the law, and it is your duty to consider the instructions of the court; yet in your decision upon the merits of the case you have a right to determine for yourselves the law as well as the facts by which your verdict shall be governed.”
I loved how when asked for a permit the old guy showed him his Constitution and said something like “this is my permit”. I want to carry one around now just for that use.
I was pretty taken a back when one of the guards said that the Constitution “does and doesn’t” apply there and, when asked about their own constitutional rights said, “it doesn’t work like that.” Pretty disgraceful.

Very true. I wouldn’t mind conversing with a cop, but the moment he becomes hostile I stop answering questions.

I did like how the videography says “like the heisenberg uncertainty principle?”
Haha. These guys showed exactly how you handle a situation. Calm, with facts and answers.
It is tempting to say smarmy remarks, but that doesn’t really solve anything.
Again, a Glock 17 on your hip and a camera in your hand tends to dissuade such threats from “security” guards.
That’s all fine and swell for other situations, but they weren’t trying to leave. They were trying to stay right where they were at.

It seems that the initial guard was acting like he was protecting his turf. Does he own the courthouse? I could see challenging someone if they were standing on your front lawn. Why is it that they think they have more power than the really have?

Another realm in speaking with law enforcement. Although with most of the instances that Carlos gives us the 411 on, I think it’s important to talk…or rather question the people questioning you. The video below is geared to a different situation I believe. It is a bit on the long side, but certainly worth the time to watch IMO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wXkI4t7nuc
Really? Seems to me he had very legitimate reasons to do that. 1) He may be sending it to someone to cross-reference with anyone who may have a warrant out for their arrest 2) If something happens and they escape, there is a photo that they can use to identify them. It may have a consequent effect of intimidation, but I don’t believe that was the primary goal.
A lot of the cops seemed rather cool. Especially the two older guys who looked like Philly police. The first guy, who my guess is a rent-a-cop security guard, was a fucking prick. And the Latino and goatee’d guy seemed like they were just being cautious, but still respectful. The two beat cops though seemed pretty cool about the whole situation. Props to them.
May I suggest a straightforward answer to the threat?
“Would you care to repeat what you just said?”
This is a standard question by a detective after a suspect has made an incriminating statement.
Love,
That threat deserves to be seen in a court. I’m sure the jury will treat him correctly with a confviction.

I really admire George Donnelly’s patience, professionalism, and courteous demeanor throughout the whole ordeal – especially when threatened. He said all the right things, with the right tone of voice so as not to throw gas on the fire. What a great video!
I’m glad someone with a cool head made the security guard eat his words.
The thug like behavior and constant harping on “terrorism” show one thing very clearly, the stated goal of our middle eastern enemies is to get us to make the USA a police state governed by fear. To frighten us into destroying what makes the USA great.
It’s slowly but surely working.
This is what happened the next time at the same courthouse.

This is a new age of integrity and the police state model does not work in America!
I think some of the Cops on the video were ok but one of them acted like a
THUG! Why should we be terrified and afraid of the cops. If a cop tries to scare you, then is that not a form of terrorism. I am much more afraid of a ego driven cop, than the terrorist!!!! The legal system since 1933 is nothing more than courts of commerce. UCC code, or contract law. As citizens we need to vote smaller police forces across the country.

I so tired of hearing about loved ones being abused by the public servants (cops) who think they are the masters. Over the last 40 years, I have seen this country turned into a police state. The officers use to be kind and helpful, they use to be real friendly. But today it’s a whole different story. They lie, beat, tazer old ladies, kill, and break their own laws and ethics rules and most of them get away with it by sticking together.
Human Rights
Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law
THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
Article 1.
* All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
The cop had a real brotherhood spirit.
Article 3.
* Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.
We need our security of person from the cops!!
Article 5.
* No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
Looks like degrading treatment to me.
This is a new age of integrity and the police state model does not work!
