Inner Vision and Photography

For most photographers the passion or pursuit of this craft was first brought to existence through vision. In truth, photography, like any other art form, begins with vision. But does it end there?

While we may not recognize it vision is the one constant driving force behind our photography. It’s the thing that compels us to pick up a camera. It’s the thing that tells us to look closer, or perhaps, clearer. Finding and trying to express our inner vision to the outer world is the journey. It most certainly isn’t the end (and if you think there is an end you’re sadly mistaken).

In the journey to leading a photographic life vision is what keeps us honest with ourselves…even when we’re lying to ourselves. The photographic life is a journey to discover and hone this vision. It changes as we change. It evolves as we evolve both as humans and as photographers.

.

Vision helps us see the things that excite us, anger us, and more. It’s this inner vision that allows us to work as artists in a craft that is confined to technological advances. Only our brains, our minds, our creative souls, advance much faster and much farther than technology ever will.

Vision can help and hinder our efforts as well.

Ignore your creative vision or try to hold it back and you’ll often find yourself in a creative or “artistic block”. Photographers can learn to listen to their inner vision.

The things that make you human are what feed your vision. Anger, sadness, remorse, excitement, anxiety, they are all feelings and emotions that work with your vision. They help shape how you look at the world, and consequently, how you photograph the world.

I Am... Losing It

Remember that finding and learning how to express your inner vision is a journey. It isn’t a destination that you’ll ever fully reach. Enjoy the journey. Photograph the journey.

Great post Damien. This is a good reminder that photography isn't all about good timing and patience. If you can reflect actual emotions with your photos, it will bring them to life and each photo will tell a story.

Damien, I really enjoyed this post! A photographer is able to impart his or her vision via the final photograph they put out. It is such a powerful thing, yet entirely dependant on the personality and conditioning and life perspective of the artist. Awesome stuff, I love your blog!

Show your photos to others online and through school or work. Once you have photos that people want, you can start offering them at art shows and competitions for photography.

I suppose I've been in a somber mood lately and perhaps this post is indicative of those feelings.

Yeah...that sentiment seems to be going around. I'll try to pep it up a little. :)

The second shot is really moody, as is the third. It makes you feel like you're there but so distant from the going ons in the scene.

Till then,

Jean

Till then,
