Instagram, move over Flickr and Facebook

there is a new game in town ...

Mac's Diner, a blast from the past, Waterloo, NY, with the 1977 filter

Anyone who has been reading my posts since March knows that I am enamored with my IPhone, which allowed my son to have voice during an emergency, and has an extraordinary lens in its smart phone container. Okay, so  I hate that the battery may have issues and that its inability to function requires a complete overhaul, e.g. an eniterly new phone. And frankly, on some level, who care about the GPS? They can track my every move, but I just want a phone that will last more than 4 hours without wane, especially when the device is brand spanking new. So this battery issue should be the real FTC issue, not the GPS.

Nevertheless, what I really want Iphone users to witness is the latest social media darling of photo apps,  the Instagram and Inkstagram, its social web feed were you can communicate with millions of other users. This new-fangled tool and social media darling made a big splash in the NY Times. This app can make cool postcard images, with effects that rival Kubota tools for Photoshop. I particularly like the following effects: Toaster, Hefe, 1977, and Lord Kelvin. But what this does to your images, in literally a snap, makes art possible. As I said before, digital camera sales are weak, and soon may be replaced entirely by smartphones. But thanks to cellphone apps like Instagram, picture-taking has never been easier or in fact more fun. In the words of this article, "Now a wave of mobile applications is letting people tweak their cellphone snapshots and share them with friends and strangers." Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom, the founders of the photo-sharing service Instagram have realy struck pay dirt with this Wunderkind. Move over Facebook and Flickr; there's a new game in town. And Instagram has a milion new users every month. Read about it below:

As a photographer with some fairly clunky kit, it is truly amazing what results you can get from an iPhone and Instagram. I've hung more IGs on my wall than I have serious photos. Obviously you can forget resolution and depth of field. See attachment or http://www.flickr.com/groups/1676937@N20/pool/ for some more examples. (Don't know why they keep calling them postcards. IGs are square).

Hi Richard: I couldn't agree more with you- and LESS with David Pogue of the NY times. Sure, I get the new smartcards for digital cameras that allow you to have WI-FI but I love the ease of the IPhone and with these apps, it is so easy to make really beautiful images; speaking of which, I loved your images here and on Flickr. Thanks for uploading them for all to see;-)) and for your comments!!

Hey Ellen: More IG coverage in the American press: http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/06/09/a-distinctive-voice-on-instagram/. You have a few more followers to go on IG yourself ; )

LOL I don't care so much about followers but I did comment on that article. Have you tried the TTV app yet? I may buy the paid version. it's very cool but if you want to learn how to build your own TTV, you should buy my friend, John Neel's new book, it's available on Amazon:

It's a great book and he is BRILLIANT!

Should be interesting to see how that all works out.

Hi

I am co-founder of www.streamzoo.com – a dead simple mobile photo and video sharing application that competes directly with Instagram and PicPlz. It is available for iPhone and Android - plus we have video, android support & web replication of all content and functionality.

Would love for you to try out the app and let me know what you think

Best Regards

Hi Manish;
will check it out. but what I like about Instagram are the filters and the social networking that is allowed when you link to other people's work.
best,
e

thx for the feedback - do let me know what you think of Streamzoo. Instagram is fun - no doubt - but we believe we have a compelling value proposition via #streamtags (matrix model of following users or tags), video support, web support & uploads (why go from Photoshop to mobile to instagram?) and an exciting social gaming system via points, Rgds, Manish

Hey Manish. Just downloaded it and giving it a go. Looks more user-friendly than IG have to say. I like the trending stream. (But can't see how you follow people?? Oh well, sure it will become clear). Thanks. Richard

follow users via follow button on the app or the web

But if you're looking at a photo, there's no way of following the person who made that photo. You have to find them in either a stream or on the ranking. Possible improvement for v2? Otherwise, it's a really user-friendly app. Love the stream tagging. Not so keen on the points system (I'm a bit wary of competition) but there you go. All good fun!

Hi Richard - thanks for trying out the app - "follow" button is next to the user profile. BTW, you can also follow via the website (unlike Instagram where everything has to be done on the phone) - let me know if you have any other issues. Feedback appreciated! Manish

Actually Instagram is FROM your phone but the website for social media communication LINKED to the phone is Inkstagram for the feed:

Yes, the web aspect is something different to IG, and is a good improvement.

and there are a tons of apps out there including the free ttv basic (through the viewfinder)- frankly I prefer shooting through real ttv lenses with my DSLR but for on the go and showing my photo students the possibilities, that app is the bee's knees;_)) see below- of course if I buy the app it unlocks much, much more.

You might be interested to know that the TTV Pro is on sale 60% today :)
Btwy, what's your IG name?

Ellen Horovitz

yeah i know it's on sale for 60% it says so every time you use the App;-)) I was hoping the makers would let me use it for free and blog about it. Some folks have done that with software and that's a WHOLE lot more money - and I just ebgan playing with IG so not much up yet but my IG name is ellyyogini. Do you have an IG handle?
all best,
e

Ah, I see :) I thought it's only today :) I just bought it btwy, thanks for your info.

Hello again Chris! We must stop meeting like this ; ) (It's me @rugfoot again!)

Hey Richard :) I actually came here because of your link somewhere :)

That was on the IGers London Exhibition meetup or FB pages. Hope you're planning to take part in the Exhibition! You've got some great shots in your stream. If you want to add to the pool of IGs for the exhibition see here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1676937@N20/pool/. Did new kid on the block streamzoo yet?

what a concept- the basic TTV app even simulated the TTV scratched lens and sepia versus black and white. It's kind of scary, really
see this image

There really are hundreds of apps doing amazing things. It's funny I'm doing a "serious" photo course and I told my tutor last night about IG and he was amazed! (That is an amazing image!).

there really are - and there is nothing like real photography but these apps are amazing as well for quick software play- be well!
