I first updated Photoshop CS4 [32-bit and 64-bit] to use ACR 5.1. I then updated Lightroom 2.1RC 64-bit to Lightroom 2.1 64-bit. But, when I did Help > "About Lightroom…", it displayed "Lightroom V2.1 64-bit 512205 Camera Raw 4.6". Why isn't it indicating Camera Raw 5.1? Is there a means of updating Camera Raw for Lightroom 2.1 64-bit to be 5.1?
Thank you.
I appreciate why Adobe’s poor decision to include compatible Camera Raw versions in the About section can cause confusion, but please rest assured that Camera Raw as a Plugin and Lightroom as a program are not in any dependent on each other. Yes, Lightroom and Camera Raw have the same code base and are updated in at the same time, but you DO NOT need to update Lightroom to Camera Raw 5.1. The Camera Raw 5.1 code is already inside Lightroom. Camera Raw 4.6 is that last version of Camera Raw 4.x for Photoshop CS3. Camera Raw 5.1 is the current version for CS4. Besides the fact that are for different versions of Photoshop, they internally support the same camera set, identical to that which is supported by Lightroom 2.1.
This all started when Adobe included the most current profile for the camera in the Camera Calibration section of Develop. People assumed it meant that it was using that version of the plugin. WRONG. As a camera was added or updated, the profile simply listed the version of Camera Raw that it was added or updated in.
I’ve mailed Tom Hogarty about this in the past, suggesting that maybe using the plugin version might be an easier route. Actually it’s probably harder and would inflate the size of the program, which is nice and compact as it is.
If you have the most current version of Lightroom, then it uses the most recent Camera Raw code. No more and no less.
