Longshore Union Member Threatens News Videographers
A months-long standoff between union members and a grain terminal in Washington turned violent this week with union members storming the terminal, damaging railcars, cutting brake lines, smashing windows and even dragging a security guard from his car before driving it into a ditch.
So it’s not surprising that a union member threatened a KGW television news crew Friday who had come to the union’s headquarters to get their side of the story.
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union member threatened to have the journalists arrested on trespassing charges while grabbing one of their cameras and insulting them with a long tirade of profanities.
The journalists didn’t need to stick around. They already had their story. Even if it wasn’t the one they had originally planned on.
The tensions between the longshoremen and the EGT grain terminal stem from the company’s decision to hire outside union workers – which the longshoremen say is a violation of their contract.
According to The Daily News of Columbia:
The longshoremen argue the EGT terminal is obligated to hire them under a lease with the port. EGT executives say otherwise and have hired a contractor, which, in turn, is employing union operating engineers to work at the $200 million facility.
A federal court is expected to rule on the matter next year. At stake are 25 to 35 jobs, mostly in the facility's control room.
This week’s incidents haven’t done much to bolster sympathy for the union members. An online poll in the Daily News indicates they are losing support from people who had previously supported them.
Even the lo
cal sheriff had some degree of sympathy for them a couple of months back.
(Cowlitz County Sheriff Mark Nelson) said he was "extremely disappointed" that a months-long dispute between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union and the EGT grain terminal has descended into violence. He lambasted the union for its alleged role in this week's events, during which protesters wielding baseball bats dumped grain from rail cars, smashed windows and intimidated law enforcement officers and security guards.
"This was an organized, large-scale criminal event," Nelson said. "We're talking about sabotage. We're talking about riotous behavior."
Nelson’s remarks Friday signal a change in tone from earlier this summer. In July, even as his deputies arrested union members for trespassing at the EGT terminal, Nelson said he was sympathetic of the union's goal. "Bless their hearts," he said at the time. "These are our neighbors, too. These are our folks. This is our community."

Thugs, idiots, goons, mafia creeps. I once belonged to this Union, but thankfully, am no more
I'd have put that redneck down if he threatened me like that... The videographers showed a LOT of restraint here.
I laughed my ass off though when the reporter asked for his name. "Fuck you, you cocksucker, that's my name, Fuck-You-Cocksucker" ROFL!
My response would have been "Mr Cocksucker, how do you spell your first name? With a Ph uck or an F? Is cocksucker two words or one? Oh oh wait Mr Cocksucker can we ask you a few more questions? How is Mrs Cocksucker handling all this?
Funny, if an organized group of men descended on a place and caused a bunch of damage and assaulted people. They would be called domestic terrorists.. But wait, these are union guys with the correct political perspective so they are just standing up for what is theirs..
These guys think they can do whatever they want, they need jail time all around, anything less is unacceptable.
These camera men themselves to be the better men. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot, the union is losing ground nationwide and has been for over 40 years. Things like this only go to further show that the unions believe themselves to BE the law. That doesn't sit well with most americans.. When i first read an article about this happening my first thought was these guys were no better than terrorists.. Now, we have a great article here how they acted poorly to photos..
Somehow it seems to me that even if you might have had right to work at that terminal they are now going to go out of their way to make sure to give it to someone - ANYONE else and make it hard for you to even debate it.. I also bet that the judge is going to throw an injuction at them that says if a union member so much as spits on the terminal he goes to jail.
Socialism at it's finest. Mob rule.
This is a country of laws. Mob rule doesn't play well.
union white trash...
No they should not go after the news crew that can help them we all agree on that one. But if the corporations keep screwing the middle class this is nothing compared to what will happen. The frustration due to the corporate lawyers and the CEOs that don't give a damn about you is boiling over. Only 10% +/- of the American workforce is union. The excuse of "it is all the unions fault" falls flat. Follow the money and find out why the men were not used and others were and you will find the truth. They did not get this upset for nothing. We don’t know the whole story. Oh and you big brave guys that say you would go after them if they did that to your camera… ya right sure you would.
You are going to have a very hard time convincing a lot of us that the poor little Union guys are getting screwed out of anything:
"...workers at 29 West Coast ports topped $136,000, according to the Pacific Maritime Association, which negotiates and administers contracts between ports and the ILWU. Longshoremen earned an average of more than $125,000, clerks more than $145,000 and foremen more than $200,000.
"Workers also get benefits packages worth $50,000 per year, according to the association’s 2007 report."
I personally know several people that would -love- $50,000 in wages per year, let alone just benefits!

Sounds to me like all you did was give several VERY good reasons why ALL labor should be Unionized. I'm TIRED of working jobs with no benifits and lousy pay. I had to go back into the reserves a few years back so that I at least had 1 part-time job that had SOME benifits.
Hey, if you don't like the pay and benefits you've got on your current job, quit and find another one. No one's holding a gun to your head and making you work at your present job. And nowhere is it written that a company must provide benefits. Those are optional, not mandatory. Don't like it, work somewhere else.

The question you need to ask though, is how much the union dues are. I used to work as a part time janitor at a place where mine was one of only half a dozen jobs in the entire place that wasn't unionized. I had the option of joining the union (Teamsters, which makes no sense for a dairy bottling plant), but realized it would be a mistake very quickly.
Yeah, the union guys got paid a ton. And the union took a ton in dues. If I had joined, I'd have owed my entire weekly paycheck, two and a half times over, before taxes, in union dues alone.
If the union guys make $100,000+ a year, and the union takes 10%, that's one thing. But if the union is taking 80%, it's not quite such a cushy deal.
No union dues are 80%. My union, IATSE Local 1, the dues are 4%. There is a one time initiation fee of about $$2500.
A real show of maturity, class and deep thinking on Mister Flannel Shirt's part.
The news crew might have left with a story that was sympathetic to the union if this knothead had kept his mouth shut. Anyone want to speculate on his blood alcohol content?
Any chance this guy was an agent provocateur?
Yeah, definitely 'not from the PR department'.
And then you have the pathetic case of Jimmy Hoffa, Jr. saying they need to "take out" the Tea Party members. (Hint: He was not talking about going on dates!)
@kc2idf my initial thought exactly. An agent provocateur.
Come on guys, let's not make this about unions. We're supposed to try hard not to let one bad cop ruin it for the whole bunch. Let's apply the same rule of sensibility here. I'm not certain the guy broke any laws.
The guy was out of line as measured against normal social standards, for sure. Shite happens. Emotions flare.
The reason it's really bad when cops misbehave is because they're supposed to have a thicker skin. They're supposed to be more accepting of verbal abuse. They are supposed to NOT react to things like that.
I would assume that was private property, and someone in authority should have asked the camera crew to leave if their presence wasn't wanted. Not suggesting it would have ended without shouting, but it would have been the correct first step.
All that said, the funniest comment was after getting called a "cock bite", when the cameraman said: "I'm guessing you're not the PR department."
Rusty, make up stuff much? People like you make me realize some people are too stupid to vote. Here is the exact quote since you are too lazy to look it up:
“Everybody here has a vote,” Hoffa said Monday. “If we go back and we keep the eye on the prize. Let’s take these sons of bitches out and give America back to America where we belong.”
So you see, voting can take them out of office.
Sorry to ruin your little Tea Party fantasy!
I wonder if that union is like some police departments, you have to have a below average IQ or they won't let you in. Fucktardia in plaid. It doesn't MATTER if he is not union PR. When you belong to a group, you represent that group, especially if the media comes around. Now it doesn't matter how much "spin" the unions pr tries to put out, Joe Hardballs tough guy made them all look like shitheads and THAT is what people will remember.
What a turd. At least he seemed to understand that the only legal power they had was trespassing charges.
