Man who was Tasered on wedding day challenges cop to kickboxing match

Robert Griffin had rented out a portion of a park in Littleton, Colorado for his wedding in 2007.

But on that day, he ended up getting into a verbal argument with a park employee over a parking spot. The park employee called the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office who dispatched a deputy.

The deputy gave Griffin a ticket for, you guessed it, disorderly conduct. You would think a man is entitled to be a little disorderly on his wedding day.

But even after handing him the ticket, Griffin says the deputy kept pushing him, eventually Tasing him five to six times before carting him off to jail in front of his entire wedding party.

He finally made it to the altar three hours later. Some guys might have taken the incident as an omen, avoiding the altar altogether.

Griffin, who was using his wedding as a fundraiser for a children group, challenged the deputy to a three-round kickboxing match with a 50/50 split of the proceeds and his half going to the charity.

But the sheriff’s office refused that offer. Obviously, they are not so brave once the badges, guns and Tasers are removed.

So now he says he has no choice but to sue.

This guy is fucked. Now, not only are they going have had arrested this guy on bullshit charges… now they are going to bankrupt him to punish him for his insolence.

What if the officer hasn’t trained in kickboxing? It’s not like that is standard at the academy. Doesn’t mean he is scared.

Of course I would never agree to anything like that anyway. People talk about a fair fight but we don’t get paid to fight fair on the street. We fight to win and to use every tool and numeric advantage we can. Life isn’t a boxing match.

You miss the point JL. I suggest you reread and try to understand the point that is being made.

I don’t think he missed the point entirely. When Griffin challenged the stupid deputy to a fight, he challenged his EGO. More often then not, the point for cops IS all about the EGO FIX they get from “one-upping” another. That’s why they don’t want a fair fight and will “fight to win” with “every tool and advantage” they can.

Just call the bastards the
EGO ENFORCERS.

JohnnyLaw if the guy can’t box then he gets knocked down early. When the fight’s over they shake hands, have some lemonade and agree to no hard feelings. It’s an old formula.

From a ratings perspective what would be better is if the park employee got tased 5 times.

Check this out. This is an example of bad cops. It is people like him who make cops look bad. Glad his police car got smashed in.

Interestingly this was the cop who shocked the guy at the A’s game.

Johnny’s statement contains an interesting implication: Cops “fight to win and to use every tool and numeric advantage we can”, ergo, they won’t step up to a fight, when someone else employs the same philosophy, in this case, the advantage of kickboxing skill.

That shines an interesting light into the mind of JohnnyLaw, doesn’t it?

Johnny,

Typical freaking gutless wonder of a cop. I have 8 LEOs in my Krav Maga Class and all but one of them is a total waste of skin. The guy is not taking the fight because he knows he’s going to take a beating (without his buddies). It’s the class bully thing with a badge.

I have offered one of the LEOs ion my class a “no holds” barred opportunity to step up and back up his sh*t talking. Guess what? He wants no part of it. However about 6 weeks ago (when in uniform) he was talking all kinds of sh*t (while he had two other city cops with him). Funny how at the gym 2 days later he did not even want to get near me during sparing time.

I have no use for about 9 out 10 cops I personally know. The couple of good LEOs I know have one thing in common. THEY DON’T HANG OUT WITH OTHER COPS!

Living With…Why does this not surprise me? Most of the cops I’ve seen seem to have an interest in either bodybuilding (vanity) or football (raw aggression–size over skill). I’d always doubted they even had the mental sharpness required for some of that mixed martial arts stuff. Funny story.

Johnny,

It’s funny how you mention training because most of the cops I write about on this site are in serious need of training.

Obviously JL would like a more lifelike scenario. A mother pulled from her car for instance: http://www.theagitator.com/2009/08/16/mother-tased-arrested-in-front-of-...

You guys crack me up. A cop wouldn’t accept a fight challenge from a person he arrested so that means everyone of them is a coward. LOL I guess that is why they respond to bank robberies, family disturbances, bar fights, drug houses, and serve arrest warrants. It’s because they are scared! Of course, it all makes sense now. They regularly confront gang members and such things because they are scared.

What a bunch of knuckleheads on this site.

Wow Todd. Sparring in a controlled setting with safety equipment, a ref, and an audience is *not* fighting.

And what people think is that the cop should have found a way not to cite the man on his wedding day. Especially based on an unconfirmed complaint from someone who very well could have been the cause of the whole situation. And certainly that he should have found a way not to use lethal force against him.

The boxing match was about something else. Something you can’t understand if you think that right is something that comes from the barrel of a gun.

Yeah the boxing match was about getting a little bit of payback against the cop who arrested him. No officer in his right mind would accept that invitation. It is just asking for trouble from the guy or his family.

If you think that this challenge was all about collecting money to help the poor children, then you are as naive as your postings make you sound.

As far as the tasing and citation, I don’t know the details of the story and I doubt you do either. Last I checked there was no wedding day exemption for laws.

You would be surprised at how many LEOs around here take Krav Maga. It suits the LEOs needs to stay safe. It’s not pretty, but it is effective.

It also seems to instill more confidence in the guys I know that are proficient. I guess “knowing” that you can “do what you need to do” actually reduces the size of the chip on your shoulder. The weakest guys that I have trained with (as a whole), have had the biggest mouths. total over compensation.

My favorite LEO from my class was a State Trooper. I have always had great encounters with the State Cops. They act so much more professional than our city cops or the Sheriffs department. This guy was the “real deal”, but so nice. I have seen him deal with people before (did a ride along) and what separates him from most of the other cops I know , is his ability to use his WORDS. Calm, polite, and assertive (consummate professional). It’s a far cry from the obscenity laced tirades our local P.D. is so prone too.

Excellent point LWH. It’s the difference between being a Law Enforcement Officer and a Police Officer.

Being a LEO is a much easier job. I suspect Johnny is a LEO.

And I suspect you don’t know beans about the real world. Sometimes “pretty please” just doesn’t work on people and police have to use force. Sorry but that is how it is.

As is usual with the LEO types, you assume too much and once again miss the meaning where it is obvious.

kickboxing? c’mon, if you’re going to challenge someone to a legal fight your ONLY option is Thunderdome. he might as well have challenged the guy to ping pong.

@EdinMiami

It probably went far enough over his head that he didn’t even catch the contrail.

“Being a decent, non-escalating human being doesn’t work every time, therefore I must never be decent or not escalate!”

Some people never learn that there’s a difference between being in control of yourself and trying to assert absolute control over everyone else, at any cost.

I suppose that if they can’t control themselves the next best thing is to control other people.

Michaelk42,

I think that you may have misquoted me there. Way to debate. Ever hear of a Strawman Argument? Of course I don’t expect much else here.

Nobody here really wants to hear the police point of view. Instead you just repeat the tired old lines about police being the big bad bullies that you are scared of. It’s amusing and sad at the same time.

@JohnnyLaw

I have heard of a strawman, here I was making an inference/interpretation. If it was a strawman I would have knocked it down.

I’ve seen your blog. There’s a comment echo chamber if ever I’ve seen one. Don’t you moderate your comments before they’re posted as well, unlike Carlos?

Also: you’re the last person I’m afraid of, much less any bad cops. If anything’s amusing and sad it’s the clown posting from behind an anonymous handle calling me afraid when at least you can click to my site and see my real name.

Oh yeah, you can’t blog under your real name because of “safety.” Not really amusing, just sad.
