Media Law In The Digital Age

I'll be speaking on the above panel near Atlanta Saturday

I'll be speaking on a panel during the Media Law in the Digital Age conference at Kennesaw State University outside Atlanta Saturday, so if you live in the area, come check it out.

Joining me on the panel is Mickey Osterreicher, general consul for the National Press Photographers Association, whom I profiled here and who has done extensive work on behalf of photographers.

I've talked to him on the phone many times, but have never met him, so I'm looking forward to it.

Here is a summary of our panel:

Room SO1019 – Is Recording in Public a Crime?  Mobile Devices and Newsgathering

Moderator:  Jeff Hermes, Assistant Director of the Citizen Media Law Project, Berkman Center, Harvard University. Panelists include: Mickey H. Osterreicher, General Counsel, National Press Photographers Association, Carlos Miller, Multimedia Journalist, Photography is Not a Crime, and Valerie Cummings. Assistant Professor of Journalism, Howard University.

There will be many other notable speakers on various other panels as well.

Maybe I'll swing by the Coca Cola museum to see what kind of trouble I can stir up there.

And if anybody has any good barbecue joint recommendations in Atlanta, throw them out there.

It would be intensely ironic if they banned photography.

Hm, when I visited Atlanta in December, a long time resident suggested Sonny's BBQ.. http://www.sonnysbbq.com/

I enjoyed it..

The people of Occupy Oakland thinks there is no right for the media to video in public. One occupier even used what appeared to be a Pit Bull to attack a reporter. Thankfully the animal just tore a jacket sleeve and didn't get a hold of the skin. One lady who appears to be somewhat of a "leader" (for lack of a better description) tries to justify their demands of not videoing the event when questioned by a TV reporter. Her justification fails miserably.

The more these people talk the less support they get..

That lady is not showing her intelligence.

That guy is not any better.

They are in public, get over yourselves. If you don't want to be filled GO HOME.

A reporter covering #occupySLC ran into the same thing while the police chief was talking to them.

"Some of the #occupySLC not happy we're here. They're asking us not to film this event."

"'This is a public gathering. Anyplace the public can be, the media can be,' chief tells #occupySLC."

Good luck Carlos, we will be looking forward to hearing the recording...

Best BBQ in Kennesaw is Big Shanty Smokehouse not far from KSU. (Big Shanty is the old school name for Kennesaw.) If you're willing to head a little further south into Marietta/Smyrna, Old South BBQ. Both are family run "joints" in the classic sense.

FWIW, Sonny's was a small chain that's mostly closed, though I think the one in Marietta is still open.

Also, I can't see you getting in any trouble at the CC museum. They're practically begging for people to take pictures of their advertising. You can get some striking night-time photos of Centennial Park just out front though.

If you really want to stir the pudding, go try and get pictures (or even video) of the Occupy kids. (They apparently hate that.) Or you can head down to the Marietta Square. They're filming a movie there and I'm sure they wouldn't mind you taking some shots. :)

I stopped by the Occupy Atlanta encampment yesterday and had no problem taking photos or video. I even conducted a few interviews.

They actually were very welcoming. Everybody out here is pretty welcoming.

That southern hospitality we don't get in Miami.

If you want barbeque, you have to try Fat Matt's on Piedmont Rd. in Atlanta. It's one of those little hole in the wall joints with the best ribs in the world. Old South used to be my favorite, until I tried Fat Matt's. They also have live blues every night (be prepared to wait if it's a Friday or Saturday night). . .

If you're heading that way (more downtown-ish), I'll second this.

I'm a huge blues fan, so I might check that out tonight. Thanks!

I will also throw out a recommendation for Fat Matt's. Good stuff.

The BBQ place I used to go to in Kennesaw when I lived there appears to have closed or moved, which is too bad. Fantastic pulled pork, and they had live bluegrass once or twice a week.

The panel sounds neat; wish I could afford to go. Have fun!

New story for you: apparently taking pictures is grounds for a pat-down...and I'm not talking about the tsa: http://www.lbpost.com/news/greggory/12605
