Miami Police Under Investigation After Video Surfaces

Video shows officers punching suspect, arresting people at random

Miami police are being investigated for abusive tactics and questionable arrest motives that were caught on a video Halloween night.

The Youtube video shows a group of Miami cops subduing a couple of young men for unknown reasons in Coconut Grove, which is a popular nightspot on Halloween night.

It also shows at least one officer repeatedly punching the suspect at :23 into the video.

The video also shows police grabbing people from the gathering crowd, seemingly at random, and arresting them.

Don't worry, those cops will get their
just deserts. Just like Tavss got
for killing twice and growing dope...probation.

Yeah, it's VERY frustrating how cops get a free pass, or nearly so, time after time. But videos like this chip away at complaisant public opinion and eventually will change that, I hope.

So what did you have a problem with on this video?

JdL

Imagine that the video was of a cop lying on the ground, with five or six civilians in top of him, at least one pummeling the prone cop. Would you expect me to ask you, "What did you have a problem with?" What would your answer be?

That is hardly an answer. This was a group of officers trying to make a legal arrest of a resisting subject while dealing with a hostile crowd.

How would you have handled it? It's not that easy to get someone into cuffs.

JdL

All right, let's stipulate for the sake of argument that this was a "legal arrest". In my counter-example, it's also a legal arrest of a cop who has broken the law in some way (as an aside, from what I can tell, a random cop is much more likely to have broken the law in the past minute than a random non-cop).

Is punching somebody part of what cops are taught as a means to get an arrestee into handcuffs? I would have thought that other, less punitive techniques would be more effective.

I see a guy resisting arrest get punched, no problem there. I see a girl in pink get arrested for attacking the cops, again no problem. I see a couple other people get arrested but you can't see what they did so I don't know how you can say "at random" but if fiction is what keeps your readers happy then more power to you.

I couldn't tell squat from that crappy video, he had it jumping all over the place and somebody's big mouth was running without letup.

A friend of mine who apparently knows the details of what led to the incident in the video sent me the following message. I am posting it word by word minus her name:

"A girl thew a cup of liquid at an officer, and ran.

Then her Boyfriend and 5 of his buddies ganged up on the lone cop.

What you're seeing is what happened when the PST (Gang unit) jumped in to get the officer out of the pit.

I'm not saying that the punches when the guy was down is right, but what appears to be random arrests were not random. They arrested the guys that were going after the cop.

As I said, really gross drunk people. Such a bad scene."

Carlos,

Well I give you props for posting that additional information once you received it. I think that just shows that there is often a lot more going on than can be determined from a couple of seconds of video.

That little scuffle is pretty much what I have to deal with every weekend on my beat. I doubt the officers were just punching the guy to be punching him. If it was anything like my encounters, the punches were to get him to comply with officers attempts to get his hands behind his back. People tend to lock their arms and punches to major nerves causes the arms to go numb and allow them to be more easily manipulated.

I've done similar things that were captured on tape. While the tape looked like I was just beating on the guy, it was actually a easily justified application of force.

JOHNNY-THE COPS MAY HAVE BEN JUSTIFIED IN THIS SITUATION-BUT AS A VERY SAVVY AND LONG-TERM GUARD OF MANY POSTS AND SITUATIONS-I RESPECT MOST MY INTUITION. IT TELLS ME THAT I WOULD NEVER TRUST YOU AS MY BACKUP TO WATCH MY BACK, AND YOUR LOGIC IS OFTEN FLAWED AND RUNS ON-AND-ON. NOT A PERSONAL ATTACK, MIND YOU-WE JUST WOULD NEVER SIT DOWN AND GET FRIENDLY OVER A BEER-AND THAT IS M-Y TAKE, ALONE!

HERE IS MY TAKE ON CROWDS AND DRINKING-AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS IF YOU CARRY A GUN. THE DRUNK FOOLS, LIKE, MAYBE THE GIRL WHO ALLEGEDLY TOSSED BEER ON THE COP-ARE ALWAYS GONNA BE THE O OJUN-PROVOCATEUR,AND ESCALATION IS GREAT IF THE FRIENDS JUMP IN. AS A FORMER GUARD-THE POWERS OF CONFRONTATION ARE N-O-T IN YOUR FAVOR-THERE IS THE RISK OF INJURY, AND LITTLE BACKING NO MATTER WHAT ACTIONS-OR NOT-TAKEN! I HAVE SAID THIS A "BLUE-BAZZILION" TIMES, AND I BELIEVE THIS; THE RIGHTS OF A CIVILIAN WITH A CW PERMIT IS FAR MORE FLEXIBLE AND RELEVANT, THEN A GUARD WITH TOOTHLESS AND NEBULOUS RULES OF POLICY.CROWD CONTROL,AS TRAINED-REQUIRES SEPARATION FROM THE JOSTLING AND REACH OF BELLIGERENT CROWDS-AND OVERWHELMING ASSERTION OF DISPERSING FORCE WHEN MAKING THE PUSH. GUARDS ARE USUALLY UNQUALIFIED AND OUT-NUMBERED TO DEAL WITH THIS CONTAINMENT-SO IT IS A FOREGONE CONCLUSION THAT POLICE ARE NEEDED IN SUCH VENUES.THE GROVE IS A VENUE WHERE WAY TO MANY PEOPLE THINK RULES DON'T APPLY-AND THE HOSTILITY AND ANGER SOMETIMES PUSH OUT WAY BEYOND REASON-THROWING BEER AND ASSAULTING COPS IS A SURE-FIRE WAY TO GET YOURSELF LOCKED UP IN THE CLINK-AND A HEFTY FINE! TAKE YOUR FOOL ASS HOME AND CALL IT A DAY---LET IT RIDE! ALL AUTHORITY IS NOT TARGETS FOR EYEBALL-TO-EYEBALL CONFRONTATION---SO GO HOME AFTER THE CLUBBING-AND COOL IT! I'M SURE GUYS ALL LOVE TO JUMP IN AND BE ALPHA-MALE CONFRONTATIONAL ON BEHALF OF A LADY-RIGHT OR WRONG-BUT IT SERVES LITTLE TO THE STREETS OF LAW AND ORDER!

I ONCE GOT REMOVED FROM A POST AT SONNESTA SUITES IN THE GROVE, AFTER MY GUARD PARTNER LEFT THE KEYS IN THE GOLF CART AND A RESIDENT WHO WAS DRUNK-TOOK IT ON A JOY RIDE-AND WRECKED IT. I WAS ON MY SIDE OF THE PARKING GARAGE LOT LOGGING IN TRAFFIC-AND TRIED CHASING AFTER THE GOOF-BALL, BUT IT WASN'T A THING YOU COULD ACCOMPLISH! THE CLIENT WANTED THE TAPES PULLED TO SEE WHERE "I WAS"------WHAT THE HELL THAT TOLD HIM, I HAVE NO CLUE! HE WANTED BOTH GUARDS REMOVED-AND WE NEVER HEARD IF THERE WAS PROSECUTION OF THE RESIDENT AFTER THE POLICE REPORT WAS FILLED OUT. SOMETIME AFTER THAT, FOR SOME MYSTERIOUS REASON, A RESIDENT'S GREY-SILVER PORSCHE WAS VANDALIZED ALL TO HELL AND GONE-NOBODY CAN SAY WHO OR WHY-THIS OCCURRED TO THE GOLF CART JOY-RIDER'S CAR.......(MY CONTRACT MANAGER, MR. PETER BELLAIRE, SAID"I TRIED TO ARGUE THE CASE FOR THE GUARD TO THE CLIENT!" WHAT NEEDED TO BE SAID---NOTHING! A RESIDENT GOT DRUNK AND COMMITTED FOOLISH DAMAGE-AND MY PARTNER, TONY, WAS CARELESS IN LEAVING THE KEYS IN THE GOLF CART. SO MUCH FOR LOGIC!)
