Model Test Shoots

Your Foot In The Door To The Fashion Photography Industry

A crucial step early in a model's career is getting test shoots under their belt. As a photographer, if you're looking into fashion photography as a career path, this can aid you early in your career as well. A good modeling agency will usually encourage their newest models to have numerous test sessions done as this benefits the models. They get to practice in front of the camera and they get to build their portfolio. Photographers enjoy those same benefits.

It isn't uncommon for modeling agencies to be on the constant lookout for young/new photographers who are participating in modeling test shoots. When meeting a new photographer many agencies may feel that the photographer's portfolio doesn't quite meet their standard for high fashion or beauty. Don't let this discourage you. If the agency feels that you have the right ideas or the right vision you could get teamed up with one of their newest models to see if a new working relationship could blossom.

There are two parties that must meet in the middle during test shoots. The model agency wants to get good portfolio pieces they can use for their clients and you want to get good portfolio pieces you can use for your clients. While your vision may not exactly meet their needs the ability to meet in the middle and make everyone happy can be crucial in getting more work from the agency.

Finding a good modeling agency is key to this whole process. It's trial and error but there are some key things to look for when dealing with the modeling agencies.

  • Willingness to try new photographers for tests.
  • Giving both positive and negative feedback from tests.
  • Having good communication with the photographer and the model to make all parties happy.

Most agencies don't like for models to have to pay for tests unless you're an established fashion photographer and they absolutely know they'll get some stellar portfolio images that the model can use right away. This tactic is often reserved for the cream of the crop (models and photographers).

Keep in mind that the fashion industry works on a "who you know" basis so word of mouth is your biggest asset. Keep an open mind and don't be afraid of asking for advice, direction, and solicit suggestions early in your career.

Be able, and willing, to take criticism as an opportunity to fine tune your skills to match the constantly changing "needs" of the fashion industry.

Remember that model agencies are usually very happy to see great energetic new photographers who are enthusiastic about opportunity. Send out samples and ask about test shoots and if they like what they see (even if it's not exactly what need) they'll be happy to allow you some tests with one or more of their models. Don't be discouraged if this takes a few tries before you get some solid call backs. All agencies work in different niches so pay attention to the work they put out and see if your work already matches theirs.
