New Digg for Photographers: Picli
Ran across a new photo-sharing website today and wanted to both share and get your opinions about it.

Picli
Picli is a new and ambitious website aimed at the ever growing photo-sharing community. Obviously their main competitor for attention is going to be Flickr but they’re going about it with a new twist.
“the big difference between us and other photo hosting sites is that rather than act as a massive hard drive. We aim to get your work seen by everyone who visits the site.” excerpted from The Guardian.
“We have a friends system, customisable backgrounds, avatars and also personalised galleries. You can come back at any time and browse all the images you’ve previously voted on as well as images added to your favorites gallery.”
I spent some time poking around the website and find it somewhat intriguing. Initial thoughts are that the community is small (that’s to be expected with a new website), the layout and design are okay, but the voting system is what may actually set this site apart. The voting system seems to put the “hottest” images on the home page and with a smaller community the chances of getting your work seen are much higher.
Sure, Flickr has it’s “interesting” page but that’s not actually a prominent feature for new visitors. With Picli those images are right up front.
I do wonder if the system is vulnerable to gaming.
I suppose there are other questions to be answered:
- Do we need another photo-sharing website?
- Will this privately funded website stand the test of time?
Questions over Flickr’s standing have arisen due to parent company’s Yahoo under much financial scrutiny.
- What would happen to Flickr should Yahoo go under?
I’ll be setting up an account and uploading some images and give the website some time. A more comprehensive review should come within a couple of weeks but for now I want to know what you think.
Head on over to Picli, check it out, then tell me your thoughts.
And what’s up with that name? Picli?

well, it is interesting - however, I'm seeing a lot of bad out of focus/poor composition shots getting 4-5 votes... what's up with that? :)
It will be interesting to see how they deal with adult pictures. I would imagine that they will be uploaded, and quickly voted up for their content not photo quality, and drowning out much better photos.
Hi guys, if anyone has any questions you can contact us via the contact form in the footer of the site
Its important to note that not all images are available for voting on (its up to the user to "publish" them). It is very early days but at the moment in accordance with our community guidelines we will moderate and "unpublish" any spam / porn / crap that gets posted. This is a temporary measure for now and to be honest there has only been one occasion where we've had to use it.
Adult pictures such as http://www.picli.com/en/photo/4307
are fine.
Blatant porn. We'll unpublish.
Definitely has potential. I don't like how Flickr is totally crammed with wedding photography and although their 'interesting' photos are quite good I still think the user should actively vote on the photo rather than let a script automatically do everything (based on views?)
Good luck to them.
Also, is that a Dharma Initiative logo in the Guardian photo?!
mitch, go to the site. log in. set your theme to oceanic, look in the top left.... hmmm
I seen picli, seems good photo sharing website, yes its direct competition with Flickr, Little difficult but not hard, only need unique idea, stuff and hard work.

We must recover the element of quality in our traditional pursuit of equality. We must not, in opening our schools to everyone, confuse the idea that all should have equal chance with the notion that all have equal endowments.
