News videographer at center of media battle after shooting video of abusive cops

A freelance news videographer in Seattle lost his gig with a television station over a police abuse video they rejected after he posted the video on Youtube.

The video showed the customary abuse we expect from the Seattle Police Department; a cop kicking a detained suspect in the head after threatening to beat the “fucking Mexican piss” out of him.

It turned out, the suspect was completely innocent of armed robbery that got him detained.

Police then picked him up, brushed him off and sent him on his way.

The videographer, Jud Morris, ended up getting a video interview with the man, who had a fresh wound on his face from being face down on the ground, possibly from the kick that was caught on video.

The video also shows a female cop stomping on the suspect’s leg.

Morris, who was working for Q13 Fox news at the time, first approached them with the video, but they rejected it, telling him it was not newsworthy to see a cop kick an unarmed suspect in the head who later turns out to be innocent.

Morris, who as a freelancer owns all his work, then posted the video on Youtube.

He was fired the following day.

KIRO TV eventually purchased exclusive rights to the video, meaning they gave him a whopping $100 bill for it. They also interviewed him on camera about the situation.

However, Q13 is also claiming to have exclusive rights to the video and they have even gotten around to posting the video on its site along with the story.

I pulled the above video from Youtube because KIRO TV refused to make it embeddable and we’ll never know when Q13 will have another change of heart and remove the video.

If KIRO TV really wanted it to remain exclusive, they should have paid Morris a lot more than 1o0 dollars.

Meanwhile, the abusive cop, Detective Shandy Cobane, offered a public apology for telling the suspect he would beat the “fucking Mexican piss” out of him seconds before he kicked the shit out of him.

Cobane was described as “openly crying” in his apology.

Somebody should kick the sonofabitch in the head to really give him something to cry about.

I hope that all officers involved in the matter are suspended for disobaying department policy. I also hope that the 2 officers that hit him are charged with assalt.

Is it that we have more people with cameras out there or am I right in thinking these kinds of things are really getting out of control?

It is clear why force was used against the guy:
#1: The suspect moved his hand, which _could_ be dangerous, so the officer wanted to stop the hand movement.
#2: The suspect later moves his leg (he lifts if up), which could lead to the suspect planning to make a move. As such, the officers would want such a person to stop moving.

The problem is that the cops are so scared anymore, they take every movement to the extreme. If they were really worried about this guy being a threat, why was he not in handcuffs? Also, if you don’t want his hands moving, and you have reasonable suspicion to detain him, then cuff him. No reason to stomp to ‘stop the possibility of the suspect getting a weapon,’ only to then allow his hands to continue to be free to move about again!!

As far as the comment, that alone should be enough to at least fire the male officer.

One thing I would change in your story is where you mention a “handcuffed suspect”.. I don’t believe the man was handcuffed at the time of the assault although this story seems to be more about the derogatory language used rather than the assault.
They haven’t identified the female officer yet.. I’m not sure why. I’m very interested to see the results of the internal “investigation.”
This video pretty much plays right into every stereotype of police. The largest and most violent gang in America.. and caught on video.

I just read the story on why KCPQ wouldn’t air the video and why the videographer was fired… I’ll never watch KCPQ again. Fuckin idiots. Even the media is covering for these pigs now.

sorry for the multiple posts.. here’s the link to the story that explains the relationship between KCPQ and the SPD.. http://www.kirotv.com/news/23492858/detail.html KCPQ airs “Washington’s Most Wanted” so apparently KCPQ didn’t want to lose their moneymaker by airing negative footage of police officers. They have now sent a letter to KIRO asking them to stop showing the footage.

Kicking him in the head wouldn’t hurt, since he’s evidently got a head made of rock.

Kicking him in the balls, on the other hand…

It’s obvious the issue is testosterone poisoning. This can be cured. Surgically. No anesthesia needed for the tough guy.

Well, it’s good to know KCPQ and “news director” (Police Spokesman) Steve Krayci won’t lose their job with the police department.

Listening to the voiceove, it sounds like the suspect is described as “uncuffed.”

I’m a little curious as to the videographer’s relationship with the TV station prior to is firing. He’s described as “working for Q13 Fox,” then fired from there after posting the video on YouTube. I work in IT, not television production, but essentially both produce software. Every employer I’ve had since college (a longer span than I care to confess) has required me to sign an agreement with a non-compete clause which states (among other things) that the company owns any (computer) software I produce during the time of my employment, and a couple years thereafter. Should the videographer be subject to such an agreement as terms of his employment at Q13 Fox, then his posting of the video on YouTube would clearly be a violation. I’m not justifying the stations actions, which seem incredibly petty in light of the fact that they rejected it, but it would explain why they acted that way.

The stunning thing about this story, outside of the abuse, is that it occurred RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET from a TV station. Seattle REALLY needs to issue an IQ test to all its PD applicants.

You’re right, Adam. He wasn’t cuffed. I’ve since corrected the post. Thanks for pointing that out.

And no need to apologize for multiple posts. There’s no limit here.

John Doe..

That’s the kind of reply (#1 & #2) we would expect from “Johnny Law”.

You sure you haven’t changed your name from “JL” to “JD” ?

I agree.

If he is a freelancer, then I’m sure he met his obligations when he offered to Fox first and how could he be fired?

If he is/was an employee, I would say he is screwed as far as the copyright claims.

Bottom line – the video should have been aired!

There are strange relationships between certain stations and the police. Some years back the ABC affiliate in this market (southwest city) had an “exclusive” relationship with the PD, getting to shoot videos of takedowns, raids, and other activities. In exchange that station ignored stories of drunk driving cops, rapist cops, thieving cops, lying cops, etc. Corruption really takes hold when the media “merges” with the government.

Well, Carlos, you made the headlines on Drudge with this one. heck. this isn’t even that bad a beating of what we have seen on this site. When o when are these idiot cops going to learn that everyone has a camera.

This video is on the top story on Drudge. What that means is that about 4 to 5 million people are going to watch this clip. Damn.

And the really sad thing here is that the cop involved is a highly decorated member of the gangs unit who has been twice recognized as his precinct’s cop of the year.

During a series on SPD’s gang unit he told KING5 this, “It’s not personal. It only becomes personal if somebody ever tries to hurt me,” Cobane told KING 5 in a 2008 interview. Cobane and his gang unit face some of the city’s most dangerous criminals. He told us how he handles them. “The beautiful thing about the street is you give a little respect and that gets you miles,” he said.

He has obviously lost his respect.

Further the Seattle PI has posted this story that further describes the relationship between the videographer and Q13. He states that he was “on his own time with his own equipment.”

I live here in Seattle which is typically viewed as a very tolerant place, but the recent incidents involving cops beating unarmed people, teenage girls having temper tantrums and security that watches as one girl beats the shit out of another without lifting a finger makes me wonder sometimes what other undertones are going on here.

Cobane sounds to me like a real “hero”. I want him on that wall, we need him on that wall.

I’m old now. But in my earlier days this happened to me: I was involved in an extremely FUBAR situation with the police, the child protection people, lawyers and etc. I remarked to my attorney at the time and said, “ You know , if these people would just video and audio tape all these encounters, we wouldn’t have all this trouble!” and my lawyer looked at me kind of askance and remarked that, “ Yea, maybe, but then the government couldn’t lie about it later.”

I view it as a measured, thoughtful response. JL would likely have said “justified, period”. As John Doe points out, “Officer Safety” has become paramount to the point that anything other than complete and total abject submission is viewed as a danger to LEOs. So, for example, the normal response of protecting yourself from their blows is of course resisting and tantamount to assaulting a police officer.

I have to wonder if Detective Cobane would’ve made such an emotional apology had this not been caught on tape.

… Actually. No. I don’t.

His attorney wrote him a pretty good speech, and he delivered it well. But without the video, he’d be laughing about it right now.

Perhaps his performance will at least give other Seattle Police Officers a little reason to behave more professionally next time they’re in a similar situation, but I suspect the effect will last only so long. There need to be criminal repercussions for behavior like this.

A female officer and a black officer were involved in the abuse. One might say this was pretty diverse police abuse!

This is just another example of standard police procedure. Nothing to see here. Move along.

But more importantly, for those who still hold the “press” and “journalists” in some sort of august esteem, this is just another example of standard government sponsored media (i.e., main stream media) procedure. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Yeah, these officers were obviously suspicious this guy was some kind of ninja warrior who could inflict serious damage with the flick of a finger. And who knows, MAYBE HE WAS!! (snickle, snort)

While it’s important to never let police brutality like this go unreported, I think most of the not-intentionally-blind public get it by now.

But it seems very few people understand how intensely major media outlets are in bed with the folks they report on—especially but far from exclusively the police. That’s the real story here.

At what point – if any – does it become necessary and desirable to wage violent, unrelenting war against the criminals-with-badges and the persons and institutions that aid and abet them, in order to bring an end to the Nazification of America’s Police?

What this tells you is that “highly decorated” may be essentially meaningless, as it is awarded through the prism of the tribalism of the PDs.

Has anybody watch Detective Shandy Cobane public’s apology? Apparently, he was very upset and crying, but not a single teared rolled down his face during his entire woe’s me performance. And I bet he was bragging to his fellow gang members about how tough he was before the video was released.
