Nikon D3100 reviews round-up

Nikon D3100

Since Canon upped their entry-level dSLR earlier this year with the 550D, we’ve been wondering how arch-rivals Nikon would respond. The D3100 was their answer. The big additions seem to be HD video mode and the Guide setting, which is designed to help those stepping up from a compact camera get the most out of shooting with a dSLR. But for some reviewers, these didn’t seem to be quite enough and they found the D3100 lacking, especially in such a crowded entry-level market. Other reviewers, however, were raving about it, saying that it offers excellent value for money. Why don’t you have a look for yourself at what the reviewers have been concluding.

cnet UK says ‘If we could make one change to the Nikon D3100, it would be the addition of a tilting LCD screen … rather than the current fixed variety. Oh, and the resolution could do with being boosted beyond the bog-standard 230k dots. Apart from that, there’s not a great deal wrong with the D3100. For the price, it should make for a very sound investment for first-dSLR buyers.’ – Read the full review on cnet UK.

Electricpig says ‘All things considered, we’re not quite sure who the Nikon D3100 will appeal to. It’s a great camera for beginners, sure, but it lacks that knockout feature to truly set it apart from the many rivals in its price range.’ – Read the full review on Electricpig.

ePHOTOzine says ‘Overall the Nikon D3100 would make a Highly Recommended purchase for those looking for a high quality DSLR with full HD video, without having to spend over £500.’ – Read the full review on ePHOTOzine.

Five’s Gadget Show says ‘If you’ve already decided on an entry-level DSLR, the chances are you’ll be considering Nikon and Canon. The Nikon D3100 is an excellent all-rounder, and well worth the money.’ – Read the full review on Five.

Pocket-lint says ‘As a whole the D3100 is an incredibly well-specced DSLR that delivers in droves. For those looking for a first time DSLR purchase, then the other options on the market are either dated or pale in significance by comparison.’ – Read the full review at Pocket-lint.

Stuff says ‘A very solid performer, but lacks a killer feature to make it stand out from the pack.’ – Read the full review on Stuff.

T3 says ‘Ultimately, despite the inclusion of its Guide mode and manageable body proportions, the D3100 doesn’t come across as a more grown up DSLR that has purely been dumbed down.’ Read the full review on T3.

TechRadar says ‘…what you have is a powerhouse of a camera which is safe for even the most camera shy to pick up and use.’ – Read the full review on TechRadar.
