Nikon (Thailand) Resumes Production
Following the devasting floods Nikon (Thailand) has resumed limited production of D-SLR cameras and interchangeable lenses.
The Nikon Corporation continues to push forward recovery and rebuilding of its production facility in Thailand following the devastating floods that have afflicted the country since July 2011. The Nikon factory at the Rojana Industrial Park, located 50 Km north of Bangkok, which was evacuated on the 6th October 2011, became submerged by flood waters a few days later and remained flooded until the end of November. I understand that Thai military authorities assisted in the recovery of some key equipment, while the first floor of the factory was under some two to three metres (7 - 10 feet) of water. Pumping of the flood water from the site was completed on 26th November and in its latest statement on the situation, issued on 1st December 2011, the company states it is "aiming for some part of factory operation to resume from January 2012"
Nikon has also reported that production of some cameras and lenses has resumed at other plants within Thailand, with shipments commencing from 30th November 2011, while the company expects its main Thailand factory "to resume production of digital SLRs and interchangeable lenses to the normal level of volume by the end of March 2012..."
