Nikon’s new lens and lighting lineup
It’s been a busy month so far for Nikon. Four new products have just been officially announced, only days before Photokina. The newest members of Nikon’s lineup are the D7000 dSLR, the 35mm f/1.4G lens, the 200mm f/2G ED lens, and the SB-700 Speedlight. We’ve got a brief rundown of these exciting new products and their advanced features.
AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G
The fourth f/1.4G lens released by Nikon in the last year alone, the 35mm f/1.4G is a “professional” prime lens geared towards reportage and news photographers. A nine-blade rounded diaphragm opening and Nano-Crystal coating give this lens “crystal sharp detail with super smooth bokeh separation.” The combination of a new optical design and the fast aperture make for what people are hoping will be an amazing street lens, perfect for photojournalists as well as creative types.
AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II
Like the 35mm, the new 200mm f/2G features Nikon’s Nano-Crystal Coat and Silent Wave Motor technology to provide crystal clear images with fast and smooth focusing. The updated telephoto lens also comes with a second generation Vibration Reduction (VRII), which “provides up to four stops of correction to assist in creating blur-free images while shooting hand-held.” The quality construction and performance of this lens will meet the needs of professionals in various types of photography, including weddings, sports, and nature. Obviously it is going to have a price to match.
SB-700 Speedlight
The new Nikon SB-700 Speedlight is designed to combine the ease-of-use of the popular SB-600 with the advanced technology of the SB-900. A new LCD design and layout makes things more user-friendly, while a new Thermal Cut-Out technology detects heat-buildup to protect the flash from overheating. Overheated flashes are far too messy. It also includes I-TTL flash control, automatic colour filter and camera format identification to optimize light distribution, and the ability to choose from three illumination patterns (standard, centre-weighted, and even), just like the SB-900.
D7000
We’ve already given you the heads-up on the rather impressive looking D7000, but if you fancy seeing what the photographer Chase Jarvis managed with his sneak-preview version, he’s some pictures and video on his blog.
Availability
Some places are already taking pre-order reservations for the D7000, which is expected to ship beginning mid-October. The 35mm should be available in mid-November, costing £1699.99 (£1799.95), while the 200mm will be ready to go early October. The SB-700 flash will also be available in mid-November, for £289.99 ($329.95).
