North Carolina judge Beth Dixon learns hard lesson in social media

North Carolina Judge Beth Dixon appeared to be cruising for a reelection to a third term come this November.

But that was before the Rowan County District Court judge wiped her ass with the Constitution last month by convicting a woman for videotaping police officers from her front porch.

That caused the woman who has spent the last six years having full control of her courtroom to lose complete control of her Reelect Judge Beth Dixon Facebook page.

An onslaught of criticism on that page, much of it from Photography is Not a Crime readers, forced her to delete the page entirely on Tuesday.

At first she tried to keep up with the comments by deleting them every few hours. Then she tried to disable comments to her wall.

But that still allowed comments on her previous posts.

Finally, she just deleted the page altogether – exactly 24 hours after I launched the Defeat Beth Dixon on Rowan County District Court Judge Facebook page – and 11 days after she convicted Felicia Gibson for resisting arrest.

Why did she feel she have enough evidence to convict Gibson? According to the Salisbury Post:

Dixon found Gibson had interfered with the officer’s ability to do his job as he dealt with a traffic stop.

In other words, Dixon believed Gibson was preventing the officer from doing his job by videotaping him from her front porch.

Dixon had about 350 followers when she deleted her Facebook page, but many of those were PINAC readers who were forced to like the page before they could comment. She probably had about 315 genuine followers before the onslaught began.

Meanwhile, her opponent, Douglas A. Smith, has 224 followers on his Facebook page as of this writing. Smith has yet to comment on the Gibson case even though he is being urged to do so on his Facebook page.

My Defeat Beth Dixon Facebook page has 269 followers as of this writing.

For a few extra dollars, not sure how much right now, I can turn the Defeat Beth Dixon page into a Facebook ad targeting readers in Salisbury. It would come up on the right column of their own Facebook page, which might work on a subconscious level by the time they step into the booth, considering most voters don’t have a clue about the judges they are voting on anyway.

If I can raise some donations through my Legal Defense Fund, I’ll start putting the ads up.

Dixon still has a website outside of Facebook. Here is her opponent’s website.

To get an idea of what type of comments were left on her Facebook page before she deleted it, check out the screen grabs below. Click to enlarge.

I bet that out of all the PINAC readers involved with this, none are able to vote in the election

Awesome! Carlos, you have created a very powerful sword that you can wield. I really do find it ironic that the metal, heat and labor to create this sword came from the same people that you now swing your sword at.

We’ll see if she decides to bring the page back up again later. She probably figures the internet hate machine effect will die down after a while and she can continue on.

Just passed a link to this article on to Shavonne Potts who wrote the original article in the Salisbury Post. Maybe we can muster some local support if she decides to report on this movement.

@Rob: #2, the constitution and the first amendment came from judges that don’t know squat about the law?

Now THAT would be ironic.

Too bad…it looks like this judge won her recent election. Too bad.

Careful Carlos, this judge will call in the FBI with a killer SWAT team on your arse, you will end up dead using your first amendment rights against her…. sheesh the nerve of you…. really… she sent a woman to jail cause she filmed a cop….. now you post all this truth stuff about her here …. your dead man walking dude.

My donation was just sent. I think the idea of using facebook ads to get this asinine judge off the bench is beautiful. I’m sorry I couldn’t donate more.

If this results in her not getting reelected, then awesome. However, I am not holding my breath. Any uproar in her local media…any locals chimed in here?

A word of caution: Judicial races are not your typical political campaigns. They are pretty arcane.

Because of the rules on judicial ethics, most candidates for judicial office cannot comment on existing or upcoming cases. They can only mouthe platitudes like, “I want everyone to have a fair trial” or “I like it when people get justice.” Sometimes you can get clues if they’re a law and order type or a libertarian type or a bleeding-heart lib.

For that reason, this judge and her opponent are not likely to comment on this case at all.

In addition, most judicial campaigns are uncontested. Even if there is an opposing candidate, the people most interested in the outcome are the lawyers/police and other parties who will back the incumbent or the party-sponsored candidate. I think it is rare for jucidial elections to be as contested as regular elections for legislative or executive offices. Most people don’t care about electing a judge, because they foolishly believe that a judge is supposed to be impartial and are unaware of how biased the judicial branch really is.

Donating to the opposing candidate is helpful, but it might be more helpful to spread awareness on your own, because while ethics may prevent the opposing candidate from speaking on this case, nothing prevents you from speaking your mind (so far, anyway). So it might be more worthwhile to stage independent rallies, websites, and write your own letters to the paper or blogs about it.

Again with the Nazi talk. I would take down that one image with a reference to Mein Kampf on the facebook page. No respectable news outlet will give you airtime if you are saying such nonsense. Keep it about the facts.

Keep sexism and Nazi references out of it if you want any intelligent women’s support against this judge. She was wrong. But adding the aforementioned just makes me lose interest altogether. Just sayin…

I wonder is this will leak to the Internet Hate Machine/Anonymous folks from places like 4chan. If it does, prepare for this site to be hammered and hundreds of comments of all views, both vile and supportive at the same time.

They thrive on social injustices.

I’d love to ask her if she’s ever sucked a dick that she didn’t like.
No? Liked them all?

Let’s hope that doesn’t happen. In that case, it will lead to sympathy for the devil (err, Judge), which won’t work out well for any potential campaign, will it?

Let’s keep nazi references off, let’s keep sexist crap out of it, stay on the fucking ball, people. I’m not a cop, I am a journalist, though. Injustices or not, we never lend (a decent) voice to people who act like a sexist extremist.

Sure, we make stories about them. But we make them look like fools. We shouldn’t, but we do. And even if we don’t, the readers/watchers/listeners thinks of us like fools.

So, how about staying more serious? Stop nazi crap and sexist shit. It’s not the issue, it’s quite simply contraproductive.

I live in North Carolina and it’s true that the rules will prevent any candidate from commenting on this case. That’s all the more reason for private citizens to get the word out.

Despite the rules we do have a lot of hotly-contested judicial elections around here.

Shouldn’t the ad at least mention her main opponents name? Not voting for her won’t do anything. We need people to have a viable alternative.

I can include that in the FB page. All that ad does is lead to the page I created.

But I wanted to say something that would appeal to everybody, not just those who are interested in politics.

The First Amendment should appeal to everybody. You would think.

@RH, #28

Oh, give it a fucking rest. It’s not that I don’t want you to speak your mind, it’s that If your doctor tells you that you need to start working out, do you respond with something in the lines of “you’re fat, I’m going to munch some more burgers, you start jogging”, or do you take him at face value?

It’s about getting through. That’s more important than being as honest as possible. Like journalists or not, but you have to work with them.

Lennon/McCartney has a lyric to illustrate, bear with me:

But if you carryin’ pictures of chairman Mao;
You ain’t gonna make it with anyone anyhow;

When Revolution was written for the White Album, they weren’t really talking about people showing other people pictures of Mao Tse Dung, what they were saying is that moderation isn’t just a virture, if you want to get through, it’s fucking essential. If you don’t get it now, you’ll never get it.

Norwegian is right. The below the belt insults only make her look and feel like the victim, when the real victim here was Miss Gibson. However I sort of disagree about the Nazi references. They’re overused in debates like this but sometimes if the shoe fits…you gotta wear it. Not long ago I picked up this book:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Third-Reich-Power-1933-Hearts/dp/0141009764/ref=...

I wasn’t out looking to draw comparisons, I just wanted to fill in some gaps in my knowledge of “ancient history”. However on many occasions while reading the book I was almost speechless at some of the strong parallels with present times. If you look at Nazism as an ideology and as a sort of authoritarian reactionary agent….the good ole USA is not as far off as we’d like to think.

“Richard J. Evans examines how it was possible for a group of ideological obsessives to remould a society famous for its sophistication and complexity into a one-party state directed purely at war and race hate. He shows how the Nazis won over the hearts and minds of German citizens, twisted science, religion and culture, and transformed the economy, education, law and order to achieve total dominance in German politics and society…..but just as important is the author’s engagement with the myriad, smaller ways in which a whole population became enmeshed in a horrific experiment in human engineering at the very heart of Europe. The picture created is of a dictatorship consumed by visceral hatreds and ambitions…”

It sounds like Evens is describing our mainstream media.

No difference really, and many (not all) of these self professed “journalists” even believe they have a monopoly on reality itself, which is why they create one sided name calling like “sexist” and even define who is and who is not.

But I still support their full right to speech as I do mine.

No need for all the nastiness. That makes it so easy for her and her supporters to write off the opposition as a bunch of idiots, vandals and immature rabble-rousers. You will not change anyone’s mind by calling them a “cunt.” That’s for damn sure. Why cede the lady the moral high ground when you clearly have it? But that’s what happens when you typed in “Dixface.” Now you look like the low-life.

Come on, people! You don’t have to be Thumper, but if you can’t articulate your opinion without resorting to schoolyard taunts, maybe you should grab a thesaurus and head down to the nearest Toastmasters meeting (they’re free), instead of posting on Facebook.

Beyond that, if I didn’t have a huge vet bill to pay because some bastard poisoned my cat, I’d donate. I hope the ad helps unseat this lady. She’s got no business swinging a gavel.

Comparing her to Nazi’s because of her views on Policemen’s rights is like comparing your grandfather to Charles Manson because he was a little racist. The Nazi’s murdered millions of innocent people. Please stick to the facts. There is no other “shoe” that fits besides her not respecting Gibson’s rights.

For those of you wanting her fired or sued, civil servants are immune to lawsuits and legal action if they did their job according to what they thought the law was. You cannot fire a judge just because you didn’t like their ruling. That is what appeals courts and elections are for.

If you want this judge gone, stop the yelling and focus your energy on the election and the issues. Get the word out about what she did Gibson. No one cares if you think she’s a bitch, Nazi, Bush lover, or a poo poo head.

Bob, as Ive read on this site countless times why Godwins law does not apply. Nazism didnt spring forth fully formed from the head of Zeuss, it was an ideology that refined its apparatus to oppress over time. I know the Nazis were the worstest monsters evah!!11! but I am always suspect of peoples motives who try to police, pun intended, speech by others. If you feel its inappropriate, dont use the analogy. Police States dont appear sui generis the are molded into existance by douchwads like this carrerist bilky club fetishist.

I wholeheartedly agree with the point that token insults are counterproductive. I was just pointing out that, yes, before they went on to murder millions of innocent people there were many future enablers and participants with the judges “respect and obey all authority” type of thinking. Worse then her actual ruling is the fact that she probably honestly thinks she did the right thing. It’s a problem when countless Americans think that siding with law and order automatically means siding with the police. It’s an even bigger problem when these types are members of the judiciary. Hopefully your honor will have lots of free time to ponder the error of her ways.

Anonymous

If you’re talking to people who agree with you, great, use the most extreme rethoric possible.

Wanna reach someone else than those people? Moderate yourself.

In the 70s, left wing papers and magazines made the same error. They got to dogmatic in their rethoric, and they got too dogmatic on what they reported and how they reported it. It led to their message becoming as belivable as a blog about advanced political analasys written by a stupid 14yo today.

Even if you’re right, you’re hurting your own case by resorting to stuff like that. It’s quite simply contraproductive, and if you can’t moderate yourself, you’re doomed to continue speaking to people who agree with you.

Great, no restistance. But you won’t get more people to agree with you. If you don’t mind that, fine with me. But please understand that that will be the result.

Depending on money available, two rounds of the ad might be appropriate. The election is not until November, and the electorate has a notoriously short memory.

No my earnest friend, the reason the “left” has lost any legitamacy is because it moderated its critique. It internalised the reactionarys dictates and turned its own rhetoric into a weak tea barely worth imbibing.

Anonymous
Anonymous

The radical left never was very strong in the US anyway, but it lost it’s appeal completely even in Europe after it went completely ballistick. In much the same way, radical right wingers will lose their appeal over time, the tea baggers gets a lot of attention, but in time, they will be no more, at least not as anything but a small fringe movement.

Honestly, you won’t get your message across by being extreme in Europe, and Europe is generally speaking a lot more left leaning than America. The US of A is a nation of centrists, leaning slightly to the right.

The reason the radical left lost its appeal is simple. It got to radical. In opinion polls, people love to say they’ll vote for fringe/protest/extremist parties, but come to the actual polling station, and they go safe. We do much of the same when we buy our car.

The Alfa Romeo might look exciting. But in the end, we go for a VW or a Toyota like the neighbour.

FYI Beth Dixon.

http://www.courthouseforum.com/forums/results.php?id=161580&which=judge

I have witness this judge do something I never thought I would EVER see any judge do in a court room!? There was a case for Child Custody, in this one, I saw a father put up a great case for custody of his two children. The mother ( re-married ) is a convicted SEX OFFENDER! Her and her current husband have been living a “life-style” that NO-CHILD should ever have to be exposed to. So gross in fact that I found out after this case, that the mother had been to prison twice because she WILL NOT obey a court order, and she has been on local and national T.V.! Why? Because the Bio-Father who was seeking custody of his two children, (in this Judges Court Room) is a former: N.C. Police Officer. This judge NEVER heard this father’s evidence. NOT ONE WORD OF IT! The judge gave a decision of a 50/50 split custody order!? The Father was out-raged!! This judge: Beth S. Dixon of Rowan County, is a mother of four children herself!? WHERE IS THE FAIRNESS & JUSTICE for this father and his two children?? I read a copy of this fathers motion. He “had” a great case for custody. This “mother”, is anything but!? Both the “sex-offender” and the judge! No wounder “FATHER’S” in this state NEVER HAVE A CHANCE for custody of their children!!!!????? I see this all the time…I am a member of AOC here in Rowan County. I have NO-RESPECT FOR THIS JUDGE!!!! I wish this father and his children the best of hope and luck. By the way…I’m a MOTHER! God bless this father and his children. “what a court system?”

“Judge” Beth Dixon has her re-election website up and running. While not as satisfying as seeing it up the the web, you can still send her a personal message about what you thing of her and her ruling at the following address: http://judgebethdixon.com/vol.html

I’d strongly avoid any death threats or threats of any kind as that is a crime and you can be traced through your internet service provider. However, as it is the private website of a public official campaigning to retain their publicly elected office, telling her what you think about her is constitutionally protected 1st Amendment Speech (except threats to harm her, which are not protected by the 1st Amendment – so don’t make threats!).
