Cop Accused Of Infiltrating Occupy Oakland Responds

Says he part of the 99 percent

An Oakland police officer accused of infiltrating the Occupy Oakland movement insists he was participating as a citizen because he is in agreement with the protesters.

Two weeks ago, Oakland Copwatch produced a video showing a clip of officer Fred Shavies in uniform next to clips of him in street clothes marching with Occupy activists.

The video also contains audio from acting police chief Howard Jordan speaking in 2003 about how to infiltrate activist groups.

Naturally, the video went viral, getting published in sites throughout the world – along with the other videos showing Oakland police going ballistic on protesters with rubber bullets, tear gas and flash grenades.

Shavies, who is also a photographer, came across the video on Twitter, watching it get retweeted repeatedly. In an attempt to clear his name, he tweeted that he is in agreement with the protesters, which is why he was marching with them.

So Oakland photographer and videographer Justin Warren contacted him through Twitter and asked him to do a video interview.

This is how Warren explained it in an email to Photography is Not a Crime:

Fred Shavies and I are both from Oakland, and are both photographers. I was acquainted with him because of some mutual friends and interests. When I saw the Copwatch video I recognized him. I saw (from his twitter feed) that he had seen the video, and he had posted a comment identifying with the 99%. I contacted him and asked if he was willing to discuss on camera. He agreed. We filmed the interview the following day.

Shavies comes across very genuine in the video, as someone who really cares about his community – unlike his fellow officers who seem to not care.

“Unlike Shavies, most OPD aren't residents of Oakland, nor are they strongly invested in the city (other than their desire for employment),” Warren said.

“Shavies is. I think he represents an exception, which is why I thought the story was interesting.”

It is not too difficult to understand why Copwatch would believe Shavies had infiltrated the movement. There has been a long history of police infiltration of such movements in this country.

And there has been just as long of history of tense relations between Oakland police and its community, which has once again risen to the surface since the Occupy movement began.

But Shavies comes across as an officer doing what he can to mend those sorrid relations.

And for that, he must be commended. If only there were more like him.

Not sure I'm in agreement with you Carlos.

It is easy to say "I support you" while oppressing you at the same time.

If he was really supporting them 99%, then why is he in uniform just doing his job?

That "I have a job to do" shit is getting awful old.

I thoroughly disagree with this - we need more cops like him, not fewer.

The possibility that some of the introspection and empathy expressed in that interview might rub off on some of his fellow officers gives me hope.

The communist cops today are nothing but enforcement for an unconstitutional, satanic, beast system government. What these communist cops fear the most is that Godly, constitutional men regain control of the government and they be made to "pay" for their crimes. ALL communist cops, judges and politcians that have passed and ENFORCED unconstitutional laws should be rouned up and tried for the treasonous filth that they are and if found guilty (most all of them will be)made to "pay" for their crimes. Whats the penalty for treason??? Be afraid Carlos, be very afraid. You'd better hope the NWO/JWO wins.

Unless we have evidence of him abusing his power, I don't think we should judge him negatively just because he happens to be a cop.

Glad to hear his thoughts. He's a smart man. Both the links on this post are broke, Carlos (the text links, not the video embeds).

Thanks. Just fixed them.

I don't see a problem with infiltrating (in other words, hanging out in a park) with these yo-yo's, or if he was genuinely doing this on his own time/view.

It's not like a cop is in the 1% (though I guess as a guy who pays taxes, he is!), and I don't know of any membership card one must have or dues one must pay to join.

No story here.

You don't see a story where a cop is openly admitting he identifies with and supports the movement while his fellow police officers have abused several of these protesters?

I've spoken to several officers down in Miami who identify with the movement but none will go on the record like he did.

This is the same cop who assaulted a KGO cameraman a couple of years ago and subsequently cost his city hundreds of thousands of dollars in a case settlement. He says that he loves his town, but then he beats up its journalists, propagates this weird notion that Oakland cops still regularly commit police brutality, and effectively takes away tons of money that could have gone to help improve his own community. SF Chronicle article about it: http://blog.sfgate.com/crime/2010/06/02/roughed-up-cameraman-sues-oaklan...

Thanks, K. I guess I should have done a quick search on his name.

Nevertheless, here's the followup.

He is OPD. Period. Still a cop.
To say we need more cops like him is a defeated statement. Yeah, he is a great poster cop. Neighborhood guy, man of color, talking about his mom. He will still take you down with the rest of them. Do not be fooled. We need less policing. If you require more, try visiting any one of the European nations, the Middle East or even Mexico. Let me know how that goes for you.

Nope. I see no story in this, nor did many others.

Just checking in to see if you are all still whining like a bunch of babies, and you are.

JdL

There is one person on this thread whining like a baby, and it isn't the rest of us. What's the matter, doesn't anybody love you any more?
