Occupy Wall Street Protesters Protect Photographer From Arrest
With so many offshoots of the Occupy Wall Street movement springing up throughout the United States, you would think those activists would look towards the New York group for guidance.
Especially when dealing with reporters and photographers.
But as we've seen, there has been hostility from some of the other Occupy activists towards photographers.
In New York, it's been the other way around, especially in an incident on Friday where a group of protesters protected a photographer from getting arrested. One of them even earned a beatdown and arrest by police for his efforts.
According to CNN:
A brief scuffle broke out after a plainclothes police officer asked a photojournalist to move. He did, but the officer gave him a slight push and the photojournalist objected.
The officer called for assistance and a crowd gathered around the photojournalist to protect him from arrest. One of the protesters surrounding the journalist was thrown to the ground by police and taken away in handcuffs.
It is true there was an incident invovling an Occupy Wall Street protester dumping powder on Fox News reporter Geraldo Rivera, but that protester was immediately berated by other protesters, most who have not appreciated the condesending coverage from Fox.
Occupy Wall Street protesters also taunted Geraldo by chanting "Fox News lies!" as he was trying to report live from the scene, but there was no physical threats or intimidation.
And let's face it, Fox News does lie.
But Occupy Wall Street protesters know the cameras are their only defense against police brutality as we saw in the Tony Baloney incident.
New York City Police Commander Anthony Bologna was the cop who was caught twice on video pepper spraying protesters who posed no threat to him or other officers. In fact, he ended up pepper spraying his own officers in the process.
For his valiant efforts, he lost ten vacation days and placed on desk duty. Yes, a slap on the wrist but without the cameras, he would still be pepper spraying protesters.

Unfortunately for the women assaulted, the power of unions that many of the protesters vehemently defend and support are at least partly responsible for Officer Balogna's pathetic punishment.
That said, the mayor should call in the FBI to investigate the actions of individual NYPD officers if the DA's fail to bring charges. Fat chance of that happening, though. The women will likely get settlements in a few years instead... Balonga will retire with a seven figure income and full benefits.... personally, a citizens arrest would have been much more fulfilling.
Which is why I said "if" they fail to bring charges. Though, I am assuming that will be the case...
It isn't a problem of unions. It's a problem of this type of union, and the influence it has.
Carlos:
Great article, but I have to nit-pick something you said. You made a very VERY definitive statement "And let's face it, Fox News does lie." I believe from a professional standpoint, that you allowed your personal bias to interfere with your reporting.
Or, are you reporting? If you are writing an editorial or commentary, then, perhaps your comment is acceptable. But if you are reporting, I believe people would expect the truth.
Yes, Fox News has told lies - but no more so than NPR, NBC, ABC, and don't even get me started with CBS!
Maybe more facts, and less opinion? Please, don't be pissed at me, I was screaming when Pixq deleted the sex on the police car article! I am more libertarian, so I try to keep an open mind! :) I still follow you faithfully, but I wanted to share that with you.
Take care, and be careful down there, I hear it has been getting really bad!

Greetings,
I can say nothing bad about Geraldo Rivera, as he did go 2 years to my alma mater before leaving for a second rate college. For the life of me, I can't figure out why anyone would leave after making it through the 2 hell years.
"And let's face it, Fox News does lie."
No more than MSNBC, CNN, ABC, or CBS Carlos. There is plenty of documented proof against all outlets to go around. C'mon man, I know you're about as left wing as they come, but you're usually fair.
I've got to pile on this.
ALL the news organizations have a slant, Fox's is conservative. I have witnessed what could only be called questionable reporting on all the major networks and major news organizations. Out right lies? Maybe, depends on what you believe..
All of major news has forgotten what reporting is supposed to be, the WHO, the WHAT, and the WHERE. I have seen SO many times one of those missing and the reporters opinion about the story. I don't want YOU to tell me what to think, I can handle that on my own. O'reilly isn't news, Limbaugh isn't news, Hannity isn't news, Jon Stewart isn't news, they are entertainment and opinion.
Whats interesting as much as what is said is what ISN'T covered at all or very little. And that is often in line with the stations biases.
So bottom line, Carlos, I realize this is your blog, but lets try to keep our feelings out of it as much as possible.
"And let's face it, Fox News does lie."
Embarrassingly stupid statement, Carlos.
CAN YOU POST ONE, SINGLE FACT BACKING UP YOUR CLAIM? ONE? NOT AN ERROR BUT A LIE (INTENTIONAL)?
Compared with Dan Rather and his false paperwork on the eve of the 2004 election, literally trying to change the outcome of a federal election (a move that got him canned, his suing to prove unfair termination and losing in court).
Basically all other media has a liberal slant (CNN, MSNBC, NBC, NPR, etc) and Fox News has a conservative slant. The dominance of liberal media and it being spread over many networks is exactly why Fox News is has such ratings. 50% of American's (and your readers) are NOT liberal or democratic party supporters (roughly, of course), and they are tired of the liberal slant.
Please post your example(s), links, PROOF of your claim. Non-reponse or no proof means that sadly, it was you who was lying to promote your ideology, your actually being worse than the people you accuse.
I LOVE your blog and read it religiously, but you run rampant down political lines far too often.
Mike
If you are too lazy to google, why should we produce the facts for you? It is seriously not a secret that Fox news has no integrity and that it is the mouth piece for the conservative agenda. Even the hosts can't keep a straight face when they are telling some of their lies. Jon Stewart used to show clips of Fox news hypocrisy and lies on a weekly basis, but in his own words it became "too easy". He has since moved on, but you can easily search on google video for "Jon Stewart Fox News" and you'll find endless examples of what the majority of intelligent people already know. Fox Lies. Jon just condenses the lies into hilarious video clips. Seriously, what planet do you live on?
FYI, if fox is the largest and most successful news media outlet, then how can you say that main stream news is slanted left? Fox is the main stream media. They set the news agenda.
When you start accusing EVERY news outlet of being in a liberal conspiracy, you start to sound like the guys in the tin foil hats. And while Fox does spew garbage from time to time, it does report some news without distorting it.
"If you are too lazy to google, why should we produce the facts for you?"
You accuse, you prove; you defend, you demand proof. This is the American way, and it it is the way thing should be. The burden of proof must always be on the accuser.
I do not have the time nor the energy to prove on a daily basis that the sky is blue, that cows produce milk, or that we landed on the moon. There are those that would demand "proof" of the fact that minorities and women should be equals to white men or that climate change is real. I will not stop assuming these to be true nor will I dignify a request for "proof". We cannot let the public discourse become dominated by the delusional.

Brian, I find Stewart immensely humorous, but I wouldnt take a stitch of what he says as news/fact.
Follow up... Other than the ratings part.... are the Liberal choices any different?
NPR is labeled as "liberal" (by Fox), but it is by the far the most neutral news source you can find. Their news is not dominated by pop culture or the extremists from either side. They do not report in terms of "tweet blasts" or "pinheads" or with any overlying bias. They will give equal airtime to both sides of any debatable topic. Although some might find their style to be boring, I challenge you to actually listen to their programming and find bias. That in it of itself should prove to anyone how full of it Fox is.
"Brian, I find Stewart immensely humorous, but I wouldnt take a stitch of what he says as news/fact."
Not to mention Politifact's clear liberal bias. They're just as bad as Snopes.
I think Jon Stewart is funny as well, but then again, he's paid to be funny.
Bob, you are correct... NPR is mainstream, right down the middle. The "left wing" and "right wing" of this political vulture class currently in charge needs an "impartial" mouthpiece to referee their professional (mud)wrestling matches. So, of course State Run Media™ takes on this role. Duh.
The dude who was commenting about the other so-called "major" networks being mostly "left wing" nailed it, and there's a simple reason why it's set up this way. CNN, MSNBC, ABC, and CBS collectively represent "the Little Guy(s)", and FOX alone represents the "Big Guys". It's a mindfuck. The Collective™ vs. The Individualist™.
And Carlos, you are also correct - FOX *does* lie. That's just a simple statement on your part, and I have no problem with it. It's not a lie. And just because you decided to omit any mention of the other networks *also* lying doesn't make your statement any less true.
First off, thank you Carlos Miller; this site is one of the most important internet sites of our times (in the whole world), if only we could get more people to pay attention to the fine work you do here.
As for this string of incidents:
It certainly does not lend itself to any protestor's credibility to violate someones civil rights, but I have been thinking about it more after speaking to the the star of the Occupy DC video since I felt guilty for being mean, and I think in context of facing arrests for illegal non-violent acts of civil disobedience it might make some sense for a group or individual in a public place to desire some privacy even if they are keenly aware of the gravity (and even hypocrisy) of their actions. Also there are some like yellow bandanna man from Occupy Oakland who might just want to make the point that corporate broadcasts aren't welcome, and hell with so-called civil part of the disobedience (particularly with "people" who are monopolisticallty libelous and violate every facet of journalistic elements). Maybe I'm crazy. I'm one of the last to see it this way because I am keenly aware of the impact cameras have had on civil disobedience as a viable political option in the first place. So please straighten me out, or at least entertain some potential situations where you might see yourself bucking the spirit of transparency. Either way I have yet to see a situation in these videos where there was anywhere near the imminent jeopardy that I imagine would make me reconsider my firm stance on the right to document.
