Ohio Congressman Has Cops Confiscate Cameras At Town Hall Meeting
Steve Chabot had two cameras confiscated in public meeting
Hoping to prevent an embarrassing Youtube video from making the rounds, Republican Congressman Steve Chabot of Ohio ordered police to confiscate cameras from people attending a town hall meeting Monday night.
The result was two embarrassing Youtube videos that are sure to make the rounds.
The first video shows a police officer confiscating a video camera from a woman in the audience as television news videographers record the interaction.
The second video shows a police officer confiscating a man's iPhone as it recorded, capturing the dialogue between the two.
The cop tells the man that he is not allowed to record the event "to protect the constituents."
Meanwhile, televisions news crews were videotaping openly.
Outside the meeting, Chabot had signs placed stating that cameras were banned "for security purposes."
The citizens were part of a group who had gathered outside the meeting to protest against Chabot, but the videos show they were not disrupting the meeting, even when the cop confiscated their cameras.
According to Think Progress:
Outside the town hall were multiple signs reading, “For Security Purposes, Cameras Are NOT Permitted.” In fact, on at least two separate occasions, middle-aged constituents who tried to record the public event had their cameras confiscated and were asked to leave.
Media were permitted to record the event, making the ban on citizen cameras all the more baffling. Clearly no “security” threat existed; rather, as one of Chabot’s staffers told ThinkProgress, they wanted to “prevent” people from “making a show” of the event
Even though televison news reporters were allowed to record the meeting, only two democratic-leaning sites have the story up as of this writing, written by the same reporter.
But who needs the media when you have Youtube?
Feel free to contact Chabot through this link or to post on his Facebook wall.

It looks like the meeting is in a public place. And so police take orders from senators to confiscate/steal private citizens property? Senator have their own private police force? So many lawsuits it will make their heads spin.
Zhaliberty:
i am sure carlos will correct me if i am wrong, "town hall meetings" that public officials have, are by their nature, open to the public and its legal to use cameras...etc. and be a photographer there, and film, video, take images of anyone that happens to be there. privacy!!! i do not think so!!!
even that idiot senator should know that. i am looking forward to seeing the update to this story.
The congressman missed a wonderful opportunity to convert his distracters. He obviously forgot that he is a public figure. With the public stage comes public responsibility, the key difference between public leaders and backroom entertainers.
i wasnt there, can i sue him anyway? the other week i was at a public meeting that the local mayor had, he got voted in after the trash canned the one that was in prior, got rid of his ass. i was told, "this was a public meeting, of course i could record, it was my right" i said thank you and took a seat. even had a tripod for the camcorder i had, and also a dslr/canon. The Senator need lessons in how to legally have and run a public town meeting, either that or go to jail.
he looks too stupid to know any better, i think he should just be in jail!
i bet you, if a senator from FLORIDA came down here to MIAMI, he wouldnt be able to pull that shit!!! i dont think he would even attempt it.
That is called theft. You can't forcibly take people's possessions whether you are on public land, private land, or the moon, so long as they are not under arrest and/or their property was not used in the commission of a crime.
What a dope. Will they ever learn, if you aren't doing anything wrong why worry about someone taking video.
This guy needs to be replaced in the assembly.
Is it not obvious? Because they are doing something wrong. Violating civil liberties. We have been slowly losing our civil liberties since the Patriot Act and now that the general public is starting to catch on they are becoming more brazen. Incidents of police state style arrest, raids and threats have been increasing dramatically in recent years.
I sent this buffoon a short note letting him know that if he takes away all our cameras, we'll simply draw unflattering caricatures of him and post THEM online. (With a face like his, it would be easy.) Then I suggested he go read the US Constitution.
It's interesting to note that in the contact form on his website, the only state you are allowed to select is Ohio. Citizens from any state in the union have a right to speak to any member of the government in the country, I think.
(With a face like his, it would be easy.) Take a look at the scar on his chin.I wonder how that happened...a right hook?A Pipe? Looks like he`s been wrong before..
What a douche. Nuff' said.
Lets hear from jonie unlawful and fart kapple and see what they think.
So did these people, who were filming, break the law (in your opinion)? Did the cop break any laws?
Johnny Troll insists cameras are weapons to hurt or kill police. Although he can provide no proof. And Johnny Troll will insist police have special rights. He will argue this officer acted well within his rights. (Whatever those may be) Than he will dodge all reasonable thought.
What Johnny Troll doesn't say is that cameras are really a weapon for the common man to expose corruption at every level within our government. A weapon to expose the the Police for the criminals they are. A weapon to break through the Thin Blue Line Johnny Troll likes to say doesn't exist. A weapon to expose the enemies of the Constitution like good old Congressman Steve. A weapon to expose the TSA for the fraud it is.
Asshats brought down by cheap phone cameras and Youtube... Gotta love it.
If it is a private speaking event then the congressman has the right to implement whatever rules he wants. He could have had everyone wear red hats denied entry or only allowed people in that had a harmonica. This includes forbidding people from recording.
However I think this was a public meeting and I don't think he had the right to restrict cameras. The police certainly should not have been confiscating them. Police can't enforce "house rules".
I remember once after a natural disaster my city opened up a Red Cross shelter and police were assigned to provide security. The Red Cross had all kinds of rules such as no eating in the sleeping area, no use of the computers after 9 pm, no playing ball inside the main assembly area, and so on.
The Red Cross workers constantly wanted us to be the heavies and to enforce these rules. We had to constantly remind them that we are here to keep the peace and that's it. They were told that they had to inform the people of the rules and if the people refused to listen all the police could do would be to remove them from the premises. However the Red Cross didn't want to be the bad guy and they certainly didn't want to throw people out of the shelter. It turned into quite the mess with the workers being very resentful that we wouldn't do their bidding.
Oh and hamhock, I am still waiting for you to acknowledge that you agree with the fact that the police do have the right to protect themselves. Should I repost your quote where you agree with me?
I'd rather have you respond to your encouragement of physical abuse by the Pigs against women.
Specifically, your response to the blog here addressing the reporter and how she got elbowed in the chest. Just for asking the police chief a question.
And you saying she deserved it. And the Pigs had a right to do it.
Why don't you explain that instead of boring us with another JTroll fake cop fantasy.
*yawn*
Yep. She did and the cops did have the right. Twist it all you want but being a woman doesn't make you any more exempt from the rules than being an asshole with a camera.
Still waiting for your reply to my question hamslice.
Thanks for showing the world what you really are.
Still no answer huh hamslice?
Just keep ignoring where you admitted you were wrong and keep trying to be a pathetic internet tough guy.
Here is your answer.
You are a sub-human piece of sh*t that openly and unashamedly advocates violence against women.
There is nothing further to say.
Don't be mad hhambone. It's only natural for an internet tough guy like yourself to get mad and lash out with off-topic insults when backed into a corner. Nobody expects you to actually make a rational point anyway.
Take a deep breath, wipe the tears from your eyes and try harder next time. Maybe you will do better on your next anti-cop trolling session.
Keep thinking of how to answer that question though. I'll ask again once you've calmed down.
the senator should be arrested for violating their civil rights.
Well, I wouldn't mind seeing him arrested, but he didn't violate anyones civil rights. The cops did that.
“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague.”

Mac OSX 10.5.8, Firefox 3.6.19
Firefox 3 ?? You should get out of the cave more often :)
Works fine for me w/ Mac OS 10.6.8 and Firefox 6.0 (and also Chrome). You do have to close the ad overlay first, which isn't as obvious if you're running AdBlock or similar.
David: How do you close the ad overlay? I'm looking for a little "x" but see nothing like that.
In both Firefox and Chrome for me the word "close" appears in small letters in the upper right portion of the video display area. When I click on it the overlay closes.
If not one of the apathetic neighbors of this town hall meeting doesn't get up in wonder, disturbed about what is really happening, this should be seen more as a disquieting statement of our law and order society than law and order...
What kind of jackass cop thinks he can just walk up to people and take their property? There wasn't even an alternative, such as "stop filming or leave" (not that that would be legal, either).
Maybe they skipped or glossed over "separation of powers" in Ohio Cop School, but this jerk needs to learn that he doesn't work for the legislative branch, and this authority to seize property as a member of the executive branch depends on approval of the judicial branch.
The Communist Judges,if someone pay`s them, will set the cop free of any charges including Murder, and Rape...just find the right Judge, and you`re off.
If they are taking pay offs isn't that kinda the opposite of Communist?
Actually, I believe history indicates that bribes and other forms of corruption have been quite common in Communist countries.
The point: A Cop will do anything they are told to do....they are Ignorant lap dogs, and a serious threat to our country..Now Cop! go home and tell your love ones, how much you love them, and explain to them how YOU are planning their future....a Future filled with the likes of you..not good kids! You are being lied to by your own Father...he will destroy you if told to.
I had one drone with a gun and a badge tell me to my fact that he didn't give a shit about any constitution or conspiarcy stuff. All he cared about was getting his pay check and going home. This was word for word.
These Nazi drones are out of control across this country and it's time for the sheeple to wake up and starft taking care of business.
Good luck huh?
Tyranny at its finest by a brain dead drone with a gun and a badge who's pay check depends on not knowing the truth. Totally out of control.
These CONgress thugs don't want their lies and deciet recorded let alone the crimes they commit on a daily basis.
I love the tired old "you are not the press" line. Could someone here tell me just what "the press" is? According to cops if you are not part of a multi-million dollar news agency toting a video camera the size of a bazooka you don't qualify as "the press". But is this still accurate? What about a small town rag paper? Are they "the press", while a blogger who gets 100k or more hits to his site is not? What about freelance people? If I make a newsworthy video that no one else caught and sell it to a big media outlet am I not "the press"? When the 1st amendment was written were not a lot of "the press" back then small groups or even just individuals passing out flyers and posting them on walls?
Yelling "Help, Police" takes on a whole new meaning. How would the officer react to being suddenly surrounded by dozens of concerned citizens reacting to the call for help??
Wow, talk about the sheeple. Why are these people so quite and cooperative? I would have been yelling at the top of my lungs for the cop to leave me alone and that he can't have my phone/camera.
You are right about the sheeple. One very simple and legal way to handle this would be to leave the meeting and immediately hold a LEGAL AND PEACEFUL protest at the RESIDENCE of either the congressperson or mayor whoever you blame more. Peaceful and legal protests at the residence of elected officials have been done throughout the nation including protests at the Bush ranch when Bush was President.
Indeed. I think I would have stood on my chair and made damn sure everyone in the place was aware of what was happening.
If given only the choice of submit or be arrested, we have to stand our ground and not submit.
From the 5th amendment to the U.S Constitution
nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law
Therefore, why isn't the illegal camera confiscation/theft in video 1 considered armed robbery?
I just called... Mr's Chabot's staffer was NOT interested to hear what I had to say about photography or the First Amendment.

I am in shock that the police are being used as the Congressional soldiers. We are loosing one right after another. If I had attended and they took away my good camera, would they take responsibility for loss or damage?
Don't the police know the laws?
What a douche, and what a foolish officer.
