Olympus - the 'Gangsta Camera'
Japanese Police explore links between the camera company and the Yakusa, Japan's home-grown Mafia
Tales of scandal grow daily at Olympus following the summary dismissal of its CEO Michael Woodford. Mr Woodford blew a very loud whistle on the company's board of directors after employing external financial investigators to examine accounting irregularities.
Reports are emerging that a unit from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s organised crime division has been brought in to investigate links with Japan’s home-grown Mafia – the Yakusa. It seems that funds from Olympus might have been channelled to less than deserving causes…
Reuters continues to lead the field with reports into events at the giant optical company though it is too early to indulge in conjecture about the future of the camera company. Who knows, maybe it’s only a matter of time before some eager marketing types exploit the link - so look out for the Gangsta Camera.
Sales of the excellent Italian red wine Brunello (di Montalcino) were certainly not harmed when Hollywood films seemed to indicate that this was the one the Mafia dons tippled. They might be violent psychopaths but they know their wine… maybe Yakuza types are dedicated shutter bugs?
