Overly aggressive senior citizens attack videographer in public meeting
Members of the La Habra Heights Improvement Association were concerned that videographer George Edwards would make them look bad with his camera.
So they pounced on him and attacked him before he could do so, making themselves look bad instead.
Now the video they were trying to prevent the rest of the community from watching will most likely go viral.
Soon the world will know that the Southern Californian community described on Wikipedia as an “excellent, healthy environment to raise children,” is about as dysfunctional as a crack-smoking welfare mom.
The video takes place inside a publicly funded gymnasium where a 67-year-old man named John Pearce can be heard complaining about the camera being in his face.
However, the camera is not in his face. It is, in fact, pointed in the direction of a group of seated people waiting for a meeting to start.
It’s not until Pearce says, “Don’t put that camera in my face, asshole” that Edwards swings the camera in his direction where we can clearly see Pearce grabbing onto his camera aggressively.
The video then cuts to another angle from another videographer named Steven Blagden who captures Pearce aggressively assaulting a much younger and taller Edwards by knocking his camera down.
“You just attacked me,” Edwards tells him.
“No, he didn’t, he attacked your camera,” a woman named Karen Vipperman pipes in. “You’re such a drama queen. Get out of here.
“You’re going to make stuff up anyway.”
Actually, Karen, you can’t make this stuff up.
We then see a 59-year-old retired cop named Jeffrey Heintz trying to wrestle Edwards’ $44,000 camera out of his hands.
Edwards backs away and Heintz chases him around the gymnasium as he tells him “we are not attacking you, you are attacking members of the improvement association.”
Then another woman begins following Edwards around the gym, berating him by telling him he is not welcome in the meeting because he is “not a member” of the improvement association. Never mind the fact that the meeting was held in a public venue and supposedly open to the public.
The improvement association has also received thousands of dollars in public funds, including $6,000 from Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, according to this account of the incident on Blagden’s site.
After being chased out of the gym by the mob of senior citizens, Edwards called the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office who eventually arrived and charged everybody involved with battery but made no physical arrests, according to the incident report.
“They didn’t even want to look at the video,” Edwards said during a phone interview with Photography is Not a Crime Monday night. “Now I guess we have to wait until the D.A. sees the video.”
Edwards said that Blagden was videotaping with a little point-and-shoot, so the seniors probably didn’t realize they were being filmed as they were attacking him. Listen to his 911 call here.
The incident obviously stems from some bad blood between Edwards and the members of this so-called improvement association.
“I am a preservationist and they’re all developers,” he said. “They’re a bunch of manipulators and they’re trying to redevelop this town into high density and we don’t want that.”
Edwards was a member of the association at one point but resigned because he believed it was violating California Corporations Code. Blagden later revealed that it committed possible mail fraud.
At last years’s General Meeting, which was not videotaped, the Association announced that they had taken away members’ right to vote for Directors and had held a secret election prior to the Meeting, even though an Election had been noticed for that meeting. California Corporations Code requires members’ consent before their voting rights can be taken away. The Improvement Association did not ask for that consent.
At the same meeting, they refused to release their by-laws for viewing, and a request to see them is still outstanding after a year. California Corporations Code requires them to provide their by-laws upon request.
Resident and then-Improvement Association member George Edwards said at the time that he was so sickened by their behavior and actions that he would not renew his membership as a sign of protest. Others have done the same.
Later investigation revealed that the Improvement Association had been misrepresenting themselves as a 501(c)3 tax-deductible non-profit, when they were not. The Association solicited dues and contributions, falsely stating that those contributions would be tax deductible.
The U.S.Postal Service Postal Inspector said that that type of solicitation qualifies as “Mail Fraud”.
The La Habra Heights Improvement Association describes itself on its website as a non-profit. To contact the organization, call (562) 697-4317.

So, if I am reading the incident report correctly, Edwards was also charged? According to the report, since both Pearce, and Edwards placed each other under citizen’s arrest, ALL parties involved were cited. Correct me if I am wrong.

That’s what it sounds like from my end.
My god… watching that just made my blood boil.
I think that I know who will end up with their charges sticking, and it’s not the guy with the camera.
Having seen some of the antics of the HOA I live in, I’m pretty sure the camera wasn’t the root cause of this issue. They’ve probably been sniping at each other for several years.
Just got off the phone with George Edwards and he confirmed that everybody named in the report was charged.
The deputies did not bother to watch the video.
It’s now up to the DA to watch the video and determine who will be charged.
The story will be aired in a few minutes on a L.A. news station, he said.
“The deputies did not bother to watch the video.”
So the deputy that filed the report lied when he stated, in his report, that he viewed footage from both cameras? Say it ain’t so!
George really, really needed a lighter towards the end.
Wow, those are alot of crazy old psychopaths.
Kudos for him maintaining his cool, I would of punched that old man the second time he shoved me.
lol, i thought for sure this was going to turn out to be one of those milk commercials that show elderly Jack LaLanne types ready to cha-cha because they drink their milk and stay strong.
the municipality where i live (just outside of DC) is also fighting with the monied-up developers who seem to think they have an inalienable right to loot and rape the earth for their pocketbooks’ gain. i can understand whey the developers want secrecy and information scarcity. if everyone knew what they were *really* up to, they’d not be happy.
while i have been to some of the meetings, they’ve never turned into this. but i will certainly see about getting a video camera into the next one i attend.
(have posted a few times here as Matt’s Friend)
Anyone who does anything to show people about the tyranny of HMOs is a hero, in my book. People need to know that any deed-restricted property under the control of a HMO is worth nothing.
With all the houses on the market, people need this information so they can choose houses in non-deed restricted HMO-free communities.

The one old man is lucky to be alive – the guy who reaches in his back pocket and pulls out a black object. In Tennessee, a person can shoot a kill a man he thinks is reaching for a weapon. Police are trained for this as well as it jsut takes a split second and very few feet to pull a kife and stab someone.
The videographer has more paitanece than I would because I will not allow myself to be accosted by anyone.
Land of the freee and the home of the brave my ass.
This is hilarious. Old people are such morons.
These guys are clearly nuts for attacking him. However, if they politely asked him to stop filming or leave before attacking, he might actually have been trespassing. Advertising a meeting as “Open to the public” doesn’t mean they don’t have the right to kick people out, and it looks like they changed the wording to “only members can participate” anyway.
And Tom, if you think being free means shooting anyone you’re arguing with that reaches for a wallet, I’m glad we’re not *that* free.
The dude in the striped shirt thinks he’s Gene LeBell. Not quite.
I have read everything I can get my hands on about this incident and all I can say is thank God for “pests” like George Edwardz. Someone has got to keep those people honest as they certainly won’t do it themselves. Sunlight is the best disinfectant!
While this is a very troubling incident, much of the commentary here does nothing to make Edward’s sympathizers look any better. I think these people who “attacked” (this was different from getting a punch to the face) were clearly in the wrong and clearly are uninformed about their “right to not be photographed”, how people are responding here doesn’t leave a lot of room for sympathy if they are representing the personalities of other folks with video cameras. The law is one thing yes, but it’s still not the best idea to look like a jerk even if the law’s on your side (and I’m not talking about Edwards, moreso some of the commenters)
That was hilarious. Thumbs up for the guy for keeping his cool.
Ticky Tacky People living Ticky Tacky Lives…
I got your solution right here.
Although in this case I almost find myself totally in favor of indiscriminate TASERing of the violent old jerks.

I just added the controversy to the La Habra Heights wiki page, and referenced this article…we’ll see how long it stays up.
That’s awesome. Thanks, Ralph!
All HOA’a should be banned imho.
What are the gun laws in Cali? Here in Detroit, it’s not a good idea to assault anyone like that in groups as so many people carry guns AND cameras these days.
Yes, that’s pretty clearly stated in the article and linked sources.
Open carry is allowed, as long as the gun isn’t loaded. Concealed carry varies by county.
OK, a woman (presumably not of my orientation) describes a 60-somenthing man (presumably not of my orientation) as a “drama queen!” All those hours on the dance floor at the Key West Copa were not in vein/
Calling only gets you one of those crotchety old gals who won’t talk about the incident. Will someone 4chan this please?
A bill banning open carry is in committee as we speak. It’ll pass to the Assembly, then the Senate and Arnie Scharzinfligger will sign it. In the long run it may play into the hands of those seeking to get concealed carry put on a “Must Issue” status. Time will tell.
Hey not fair! I am not 60 years old……..do I really look that old?
Carlos, thank you very much for posting the story on your web site. I must clarify that it was not an HOA, it was a Nonprofit group that aims at protecting our community from urban development. To many people, it would appear they have sold out. Thus the problems for the organization. The media spotlight and interest of the Fed’s has people asking about their less than up front activities. As the video shows they did not want their “open” meeting videotaped, why? What do they have to hide?
I have posted additional video and shortly a news split screen stereo version will be visible on You Tube.
One last thing, the Los Angeles Sheriff Department is already accusing us of editing the tape. What are they trying to cover up? They did not even want the videotape’s in the first place.
Thank you all for your support.

George has been stirring the pot for some time now. He needs to get a life! Ask him about the time he confronted an 90 year old man. I mean what type of monster picks on elders and is constantly interferring with emergency services by taking pictures of 3/4 naked burn victims. Know his histroy before thinking he’s a victim.
So call you’re cops on me, but don’t dare assault me or my personal property!
If he was truly “interfering with emergency services,” I’m sure he would have been arrested for that.
And from what I’ve seen on the video, the elders had the impression they could walk all over him.
If he truly had assaulted a 90-year-old man, I’m sure 67-year-old John Pearce would have thought twice about assaulting him.

THEN QUIT PROVOKING PEOPLE YOU MORON. It has nothing to do with video taping people…you just don’t know where to draw the line. You’d get a beat if you did that to someone your age
I always feel complimented when I get photographed.
His history has nothing to do with this isolated incident. I don’t know George, I don’t know anyone in the LHHIA, and until one day ago, I hadn’t heard of either of them. I don’t need to have prior knowledge of them to see what happened in this case.
In this case, it appears that he was assaulted and battered simply because he was attempting to videotape a public meeting. No matter what events may or may not be in his history, he had the right to film a public meeting and the people assaulting and battering him were obviously in the wrong.
I don’t know George, though it was clear that HE was NOT the aggressor in this incident. It IS clear however that the “elders” were the ones picking on HIM. Pearce is lucky that George restrained himself enough to not knock Pearce’s dentures down his throat, as he would have had every right to do so in defense of himself and his property.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say you’re most likely one of the “Pot Stirrers” at the meeting in question, which WAS public, and not private as mentioned. If you are one of the people that was there, shame on you for standing by and allowing those geriatric thugs to attack Edwards.
Casey are you referring to the news story that was only covered by me and exposed the fact that the City only provided for the staffing of one engine even though three engine companies are required? Nothing like shooting the messenger.

May 28, 2010
La Habra Heights, CA – At approximately 9:35PM firefighters here responded to reports of an explosion in the 540 Block of East Road across from the Hacienda Golf Club on the City’s eastside. Reports that the home was fully overwhelmed by fire were confirmed upon arrival of the first due engine company. Heavy smoke and flame was immediately visible throughout the community alarming those unaware of the extent of the fire. Nearby residents used garden hoses to prevent the spread of the fire as firefighter struggled to gain access to water. Los Angeles County Fire Department provided additional resources from Rowland Heights with Santa Fe Springs Fire providing an engine. A man described as the occupant of the home sustained minor burns and smoke inhalation, received treatment from paramedics before being transported to St. Jude Hospital, where his condition remains unknown but was alert at time of transport.
Concerned residents turned to radio scanners for information and progress reports about the firefight. Additionally the La Habra Heights Fire Watch kept residents informed via their website providing real-time audio of the fire and rescue efforts for those that did not have access to radio scanners.
La Habra Heights Fire Chief Randolph Rohrer, called for Los Angeles County arson investigators but an investigation is pending until daybreak, extensive damage to the residence and challenging terrain was cited. Eyewitnesses report the home to be a total loss.

No I was not at that particular meeting, but i have attended other meetings and he is a pest. I will agree that the seniors went over board and should have kept their cool. My point is… George is not liked in the community. He is always sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong and spreading gossip like wild fire. Stephen Blagden (aka GadFly/ “community Activist”) and George Edwards need to volunteer and do something rewarding for their community rather planning out these dramatic events…and yes they planned it. George and Stephen both have websites bashing the city…. how can anyone respect a person like that.
George-
Give me a break. The man only had a towel and his house burnt down. He was yelling at you to get the camera out of his face….have some respect man. You’re not TMZ…relax buddy.
A recurring theme is ‘I see you with a camera, I go ballistic while demanding you turn it off.’
What ever happened to decent, calm, polite requests? I tend to think the internet is killing off that archaic concept. People hardly ever just disagree, they get into ‘flame wars’ with vile and totally ridiculous name-calling.
Not that a media person is going to just say ‘OK, I didn’t realize it would bother you’ and leave. But NOBODY seems to start there. It’s always rabid-dog snarling from the get go.
Come to think of it, it’s not much different from road rage without the cars.
Everything you mentioned is his RIGHT. What is NOT a right, is physically attacking someone for exercising their rights.
So you don’t like the guy, big deal. Put on your big girl panties and deal with it instead of whining about him “sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong and spreading gossip like wild fire”. It’s none of YOUR business what HIS business is either.
When the economy really goes to hell we can rest assured that the asshole seniors in this video will not be getting any public pension once government goes tits up, hahahahaha!! Good luck then you geriatric lunatics. These are the same people who probably want CCTV cameras everywhere to keep them safe from teenagers and Mexicans. If you don’t want to be on film then stop taking tax payers money.
Well, 20-something and “vane” not “vien.” See where drinking and typing gets you?
Since we’re correcting spelling, let’s do it properly. The correct spelling is “vain” for that particular usage of the word.
A “vane” is the web ,or flat part of a feather. It can also be a feather fastened to the shaft near the nock of an arrow. (It also references a weathervane)
Points for trying though!
“If you don’t want to be on film then stop taking tax payers money.’
If you are referring to Social Security they and their employers paid into that all their working lives.
Having websites bashing the city is called FREEDOM OF SPEECH – or do you not believe in the Constitution of the United States of America?
By the way – why were those “seniors” trying to take the camera? Isn’t that attempted robbery?
I had previously added a couple of lines about this. After your update, I merged the two additions under the Controversy section. It should stay up for a while…
Hey, Casey, you are as stupid as the seniors in the tape.
A) Past incidents MEAN NOTHING. He was assaulted, period.
B) George remained unbelievably polite throughout, considering the amount of people going after him and the value ($44,000) of his camera. He is significantly bigger, younger and stronger than all involved. They are all lucky he didn’t drop every one who touched him, as he had the legal right to do so. I’m 6’8″ 240lbs and work with equally expensive gear. Had someone screwed with my life supporting gear, they’d have been laid out quickly. I know, as it has happened more than once.
C) The old folks need to research the federal and state laws regarding capturing images. He did nothing illegal, as he was allowed in while obviously carrying his gear. The gym is public property and it was not rented. He had every right to be there. On the contrary, nobody, NOBODY, had the right to touch him, grab his camera, etc.
D) Then we have the lies per the police report. Apparently your friends didn’t see the other camera filming the scene. Whoops, caught lying! Perhaps this is a perfect example of the lies and lack of integrity of this group.
I hope some of these old folks get some hefty fines. I hope George sues them in civil court and takes money off each of them, let alone legal costs. I hope the light this brings on the group causes the tax and other regulatory authorities to investigate and sanction.
The fact that you can even defend the actions in this video tells how screwed up this association is.
Happy Defense to the old folks! I hope it’s really pricey!
Mike S

Anyone that messes with a 6’8″ 240lb man is certifiably insane.
I am 5’8″ 160lbs, moonlight as a bartender/bouncer, and have taken down some pretty big 200+lb drunks, but I also know how to pick my battles. There is a time when using words to defuse a situation is better than using force. I think I would choose the former in the unfortunate event that I might piss you off.
