Painting on Layers in Corel Painter: Video
Painting on layers in Corel Painter doesn't have to be difficult. Here is a quick video to show the basics of painting on an empty layer using a clone method of painting and how to test it to be sure it's painting. It also shows the magic box to click to make it all work together.
Marilyn's Portrait Brushes are referred to in the movie but the lesson works with most brushes. These brushes are from a DVD called "Digital Paintbrush" available in the Digital Paint Shop.
Be aware that NOT every brush paints on an empty layer. Each brush has it's own attributes. For instance the Sargent brush which is a favorite does not paint on an empty layer. A good way to test if it's the brush or a setting is wrong is to go back to a basic brush like Acrylic Captured Bristle which DOES paint on an empty layer and test if it's working. If it's working, then it's the brush you are using.
How to paint on a layer with a brush that won't paint
The best workaround for a brush like the Sargent brush that won't paint on an empty layer is to make a copy of the layer and paint on the copy.
Step by Step How to Make a Copy Layer in Painter
- Be sure the image you want to create the copy layer is the active one
- At the top of the screen choose SELECT>ALL
- At the top of the screen choose EDIT>COPY
- At the top of the screen choose EDIT>PASTE IN PLACE
This will now show two images in the layers palette exactly the same. Be sure to be painting on the top layer by clicking on it to activate it. To see your painting work better turn off the EYE to the left of the bottom image and you will only see your top layer then.
Enjoy the video!
