Philly cop being investigated for Tasering baseball fan

Here we have a fan who runs onto the baseball field as we’ve seen so many times before.

But rather than get chased down and escorted out of the stadium, he gets chased down and shocked with a Taser gun before being escorted out of the stadium.

So now the cop is being investigated on whether use of the Taser was appropriate in this situation.

Well supposedly cops are only supposed to use their Taser when there is a possibility of violence.

Oh hell, cops can use their Taser whenever they want, as we have seen these past years. All you have to do is step out of line.

Because it’s a matter of life or death that a game not be interrupted in any way.

Baseball, like the internet, is serious business.

Obviously a failure to comply with the cops demands rather than being a danger to himself or someone else. The Taser has morphed from a defensive weapon to protect the police and the public to a compliance weapon where the police just tase away because it is easier. I suspect the cop did not want to run around and try to catch this kid, and look silly in the process.

On a NBCsports website the question was asked “is tazing an acceptable way to stop people who run on the field?”
I thought anything in excess of 30% in favor would be a humanitarian failure.
Actual result in favor: 71.2%

(You know because just in case, you can never know, he might have all those WMD)

Yeah, the tazer is just a tool to the cops now. For their protection? Maybe to protect their heartrates. So maybe it is protecting the cops, most of them couldn’t run that long. Ha.

I agree that tasers are used altogether too much. However, I have no sympathy for these petty little publicity hounds who get a few beers in them and then decide its OK to hold up a game, for their enjoyment, that thousands of other people (maybe a million or more if you count the TV audience) want to watch. A pox on both their houses.

If there weren’t a tazer available then would they have shot the guy? Isn’t it a less than leathal option when deadly force is required.

Why run some harmless guy down when you can just taze your problem away?

Its what all the hotshot cops are doing these days.

Them tazers are a godsend for lazy cops

The problem is that the police departments have bought Taser International’s literature hook, line, and sinker. It also doesn’t help that Taser goes on the offensive anytime anyone suggests that CEWs are anything less than a completely benign compliance weapon. Anyone who dies, dies from “excited delirium”, a term that appears in no medical references. Heck, they sued a coroner to have the cause of death changed. Canada recently had a high profile death (Robert Dziekanski) which resulted in a Royal Commission investigation, and much more stringent rules in the use of Tasers in Canada. Not surprisingly, Taser International is currently suing the Commission in Canada over the report. Of course Mr. Dziekanski died, not from being zaped 5 times in less than 10 mintues, but from “excited delirium”.

That cop was to fucking fat to keep up, hence the taser. I think all cops should have to pass a physical every year, perhaps one that requires them to run a mile in under 10 minutes. You are 100% right Tom Joad, the taser is a compliance device. I would like to see all the top dogs who work for Taser International get tasered, every day, to remind them what their product is capable of.

Guy shouldn’t have been on the field. He got tasered because he was being an arse. Feel free to call me a facist if you feel the need, but it comes down to the fact he was breaking the law.

I’m all for the taser being used as a pain deterent, but i live in Australia where our police have theirs dialed down to a lower setting then you guys do in the states.

Now i’m going to sit and wait for some one to try and make this a first ammendment rightes issue

I thought of your website when I saw this story too. Glad you picked it up. Good thing for this fan that the cop was able to distinguish his Taser from his service pistol.

I’ve seen videos where a player pummels the drunk and everybody thinks that’s cool. Actually, the vast majority of the people in this stadium seemed to think it was cool. Only a couple boos can be heard among the cheering.

Was the cop justified? I don’t know.

I do think they are too often too quick to tase.

I do know that if the ‘fan’ had any hint of maturity or responsibility, he’d have stayed in his seat. He had the ultimate power to prevent what happened but chose to be an idiot instead.

At sporting events, someone is generally fair game when they cross the barrier onto the playing area. I’ve done security at wrestling matches and been told to beat the hell out of anyone to keep them from getting in the ring. Not that it ever happened or that I was capable of doing it, but that seems to be the general understanding with sports. However, that doesn’t justify using a Taser™, a potentially lethal device.

The cops spend their time lasering baseball fans while the terrorist are up to no good. Look at these pictures and get freaked out:

Tazer or Billy Club? The guy was told to stop and he didn’t so the cop had a choice to either keep reenacting an old Benny Hill episode or get it over with and restore order.

Uh, Matt, I thought it was, too, until I looked a few minutes ago and saw one. I’m not a big time conspiracy theorist, but it’s there. Go to Google Maps and type in “Co Rd 240 Lake City, FL”, then scroll to the left until you hit the intersection with 47. If you don’t see it right away, then zoom in until you do.

He was not committing an act of violence.
He was not harming others.
He was not destroying property.
He was not taking property belonging to others.
He was not threatening harm to another person.

There IS NO justification for violence being committed against him.

What he did was to subvert the right of thousands of fans to watch a sporting event they paid for. In that sense he was stealing a part of their tickets. So many people in this country have the idea they can do whatever they think is funny even if it causes great convenience to other people. Its the ME! ME! ME! mentality and its “If you don’t like it you can kiss mine and go to”. “I’ll rub it in your face and let’s see what you can do about it.” It’s one more example of the lack of civility in American society. Well, this bozo paid the price and as far as I’m concerned he could’ve taken another dose of the same treatment. He brought it on himself.

I’m not defending the kid. I just don’t think a Taser™ should be used unless it’s an alternative to deadly force. If they had tackled him to the ground and he broke a leg or something, I would not lambast the cops for that. I just don’t like how acceptable it’s become to use a sometimes lethal device in everyday situations.

Well if we had proper sports/a proper attitude about it runners would be considered part of the entertainment.

Then again, players and fans respond appropriately to the misuse of force by security, as well:

How about if these turd heads think of that before they engage in these less than entertaining antics? There’s a lot that can be said for having the maturity to take responsibility for your own safety.

Joel, when you purchas a ticket to a sporting event you are in fact purchasing the right to view the event, with a few limitations that do not include the necessity of viewing game stopping “entertainment”.

I wish they had tazed Tanner in the Bad News Bears remake. Not because I condone tazer use in nonviolent situations (I don’t), but because it’s a very realistic reaction from law enforcement now.

It’s all part of the entertainment. Sporting events are damn boring enough. It’s fun to add a little flair to the event to watch an occasional nut run around and get chased. Is the tazering inappropriate? Absolutely. Is the tazering entertaining? Yes.

No the boobirds announced disapproval and cheered only when the guy got up.

My guess is that it woke up most of the fans and that most of them truly enjoyed the entire event…up until the use of potential deadly force. What might have happened if he had not been Tazed? He would not have gotten very far before being caught. I wonder if a streaking woman would have been afforded the same violent end? I doubt it. Watch out for angry, undertrained, fat cops with Tazers. You could be next.

I was glad to see Tom Brokaw covering the incident on the NBC nightly news tonight. Perhaps the the coverage will pressure law enforcement community will establish some better standards for using the Taser.

Anonymous

Perhaps one day when we watch a sporting event we can all be fitted with electronic collars or tags that would zap us if we went onto the field. That way we wouldn’t need police to tase us. Things have a habit of growing, usually in ways we don’t like or ever thought they could/would initially.

Perhaps if people were so concerned about others running onto a field/ring and signalling the end of the world by doing so, I mean fire and brimstone will rain down from the sky if this evil is not stopped (sarcasm for you dumbasses out there), a lifetime/league wide ban could be imposed on them as punishment, now that would be a deterrent. It’s always the right thing to do to people when they break the law, until you break the law and it’s done to you, then it’s wrong.

We should just get it all over with now and bring back the colesium.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha! Yea right. The Taser is the new gun, which I thought it was to be used in place/instead of a gun. I am left wondering if that fat cop did not have a taser if he would have pulled out his gun and shot the dumbass, hmm, people, thoughts? Would it have been okay for the filth to shoot the dumbass runner? If not then it was not okay for the filth to tase him, pure and simple. Give a child an electric cattle prod and they will go and shock their siblings, give a cop a taser………………..

What would hurt more, a 200+ pound officer running at full speed tackling the suspect, or being tasered? There was just as much a chance of serious bodily injury occurring from the officer tackling the suspect as there was using the taser.

Lets not forget, the suspect knowingly broke the law by trespassing on the playing field during a game. Who knows what his intensions were, to harm himself, the players, the police trying to arrest him? If this suspect had been minding his own business in the stands and was tasered for no reason, then fine, the cop is in the wrong. This isn’t the case. The officer brought the situation to an abrupt end. For that, he should be commended, not chastised.

Anonymous

If he had tackled the guy and had to hit him a bunch of times to get compliance we’d be reading an article about how the cops brutally beat the guy. Law Enforcement can’t win either way, it’s just the way media spins it. Don’t break the rules and you won’ t get tased. 1 person out of thousands that attended that night. Only one jackass got tased…

Anonymous

They are “sometimes lethal” when your cranked out on speed or meth… Moral of the story, don’t do speed or meth! I say tase em’ all! lol It’s not a deadly force option. If a cop faces a deadly force situation, his gun had better be out and ready to fire.

Anonymous
Anonymous

To Jody,
You call the cop “filth” and “fat.” You also say that the taser is ment to replace the gun. Wrong! If a guy pulls a gun or knife on a cop he better pull his gun and not a taser. You have to be the biggest jackass I have ever read comments from. I think you should get a job in law forcemet, but something tells you you could not pass the test.
