PINAC review of the Keychain Camera

To the casual observer, the Keychain Camera looks no different than a car alarm remote.

However, it has the capability of capturing quality video and sound as well as decent low-res photos.

It was sent to me for review by Photography is Not a Crime reader Randall Thomas, a New York photographer who’s been arrested twice for either photographing or filming federal buildings.

He is now selling these devices at $45 each.

The camera is apparently made in China with instructions written by Chinese who are not too versed in the English language, so the instructions are not very clear.

So I contacted Thomas who quickly clarified the instructions. It’s really not that hard to operate.

However, unlike other keychain cameras on the market, this one requires the use of a micro memory stick, which I had to buy for $20 at my local Walgreen’s.

And then for the memory stick to actually work, it needs to be formatted on your computer. And it requires this each time you download photos from the stick onto your computer or else it might work again or it might not.

The camera is marketed as a spy camera and it is just that. It works best when you turn the video camera on, lay your keys on a counter with the tiny lens pointing in the direction of what you want to shoot and just let it roll.

Like most cheap video cameras (and some expensive ones), It doesn’t work very well in low-light situations but it works surprisingly well in well-lit situations.

Because there is no view finder or no image screen, it can be difficult ensuring you are pointing the camera in the right direction. But I guess that takes practice.

The above video is compiled of three separate clips I shot with the camera, including a walk to my local liquor store for a bottle of Old Irish Bushmills Whiskey, a clip of several Miami cops drinking coffee outside my local Cuban joint with one of them performing a magic trick to his peers (and it’s so obvious the lighter ends up in his left hand) and a clip of me pumping iron at the gym in my building.

I did shoot other clips hanging out with friends inside a couple of bars but they were way too dark to post. And some of the other clips I shot were too bouncy because it can be difficult maintaining a steady hand with such a small camera.

The bottom line is that the camera does serve its purpose as a spy camera, which of course means, it can get you in trouble under wiretapping laws in certain states.

Unfortunately, the camera would not serve to protect me if I’m getting harassed for taking photos because it would require me to pull my key chain out, turn the camera on (which can take a few long seconds) and then point it in the direction of the cops, which would probably make them even more suspicious.

On one evening, I was out with friends and I used the Keychain Camera to film a couple of musicians that were performing. I walked up to them and pointed the camera in their direction and they were kind of freaked out and asked what I was doing.

Had I been recording with a normal looking camera, they would have probably ignored me or played to the camera. But it just looked weird for some guy pointing what looked like a car alarm remote at them.

Maybe they thought I was trying to shut them up or something.

1. They’re awfully familiar with you at the liquor store

2. Cops practicing slight-of-hand, frightening.

3. Breathe when you exercise

Is there an update on those arrests? Are charges still pending?

Oh no. You’re seriously going to put those stupid google ads in the page wherever it recognizes a word, even if the context is completely different? Man I hate those things. Some ads are fine, but you just keep adding more and more of them.

How long can it record? Some encounters can take quite long and it would be good to have a record of the complete incident.
Some form of a quick trigger system would be good because I recon for the purpose it is intented it might be needed fast.
Also cops doing magic tricks making stuff disappear is nothing new. They do that to surveillance footage etc. all the time.

1. What’s total recording time?
2. What’s the largest memory stick it will take?
3. What kind of battery does it take and how long does it last?

This thing could easily be modified to be in a hat, then it would be pointed wherever you’re looking.
If you rig it right, you could switch it on with an “adjustment” of your hat so it doesn’t look suspicious.

And as you said, it might violate wiretapping laws in some states so everyone be careful!!!

We’ve always known that if we want to photograph something without “getting caught” there are many ways to do so. In all honesty, you don’t have to work for the CIA to build a camera small enough to fit into a wart and, then, paste the wart on my nose. The issue is the extent to which any of us are inhibited from shooting. Last week, at the beach, I watched as two cruisers pulled up, one pointing east, the other pointing west, in that cop-car coitus we’ve all seen. They stayed there, for over an hour. Sure, everybody deserves a lunch break, but when i thought about taking a series of photos with date/time embedded, I decided not to do so. Why, ’cause I had $2000.00 worth of gear with me and I’d have to go back to the hotel, throw it on the bed and grab the $20.00 point-and-shoot I got off eBay. Somehow I’ve got a pretty good idea that the trepidation I felt was exactly what Thomas Jefferson was trying to prevent when he wrote the First Ammendment.

Why is photography never a crime: I’ve had this little, tiny, itsy-bitsy man-crush on Carlos since I discovered this site over a year ago, but I just watched the video of him at the gym? I am cured. Photography, well, videography, has healed me!

I didn’t have too much interest in watching Carlos working out, I don’t think he’s my type in any case; wrong set of chromosomes.

Prices vary on this commonly-available camera:

If you happen to have a micro SD already, you can save a bunch.

Btw, what would be REALLY useful would be wireless recording mirroring/back-up. As in cop takes camera, “misplaces” memory stick and you still have a copy which was recorded over a Wi-Fi network in a safe place.

Would have been useful during George Donnely’s arrest. They (cops) still have the camera?

No. Charges were dropped. More info on the cases against the Government forthcoming.

Mr. Miller is a rare resource. I hate those ads also and they kinda freak me out. But I support this man earning an extra dime even if it’s annoying. I wish I could personally write him a big check.

You can record on a 2gig card for about two (2) hours continuously.

With a little practice, which I would suggest, you can become very accurate and quick with the device.

Remember if you don’t get a good shot of the cop cursing you, you will certainly get great audio of it.

8 gig card is the largest I think.
2 hours of recording and the life of the battery which is built in and rechargeable.

I take mine apart from time to time. It really is a solid device consider the size and what it does.

As far as the law is concerned: In NYC all is fair as long as it’s in public and or concerning a Law Officer.

Just ordered a uCorder from Amazon.com because of it’s small size and low price and it appears to have a number of basic features of the VieVu in terms of battery life and angle of the lens.

The only drawback is a two-button sequence needed to begin recording. That is, one must toggle the on switch on the side then press the record button on the back. So I think most of the time it’ll be off to save battery power unless you feel something amiss and turn it on and then start recording when your spider senses really start tingling.

With the LED light above the lens could convince one it’s a flashlight and placing it next to a pen or pencil in the pocket makes it look like a typical geek accessory.

The Keychain Camera appear interesting to use as a secondary backup in case the uCorder gets found or damaged in a scuffle, hence the need for low prices for backup cameras. Where is the lens located and what’s its angle of view?

I gotten out of two traffic tickets because the county cop so didn’t believe my side of events that he started cursing, then realized his mistake and let me go. State cops are more hard-nose and have a ticket already written before he even approached the door. And the one I got from the state cop was the one I deserved, but for a good reason.

Two points:
Keychain and other cameras that are so small pose a potential hazard as well, according to a lawyer friend of mine – wiretapping. That involves surreptitiously recording someone’s voice and that is why most of the wiretapping charges for being caught on camera are thrown out – if you see the camera, you are aware you are being recorded. But if it is a hidden device, then wiretapping would likely be a credible charge in some jurisdictions.

Point Two – Really you haven’t seen Superbad? The convenience store scene where the cops insist the robber was black over the objections of the clerk is a classic.

In New York the Laws are common sense as far as I know.

Anything in public is fair game. Anything directed are you is also fair game.

So if I’m on the subway and a couple is in plain view, I can record them, and if they are talking so loud that I can hear every word, it’s meant for me to hear.

So I record stuff that I have absolutely no interest in just because I can and because it serves as a good YouTube commercial for the product.

Okey, got the uCorder and tested it out in the pocket. Some observations:

1. Video. The male upper chest is not straight but has a slight upward curve. The uCorder laying flat in the pocket against the chest causes it to aim upward so you see either sky or the roof of your car. To compensate one has apply a slight pressure on the uCorder’s lower end causing it to tilt forward. Packing something behind the uCorder to make it level in the pocket causes a clear bulge and making the unit more obvious. One has to be clever to place the hand over the chest without looking like there’s a magicial sling in use. That steep angle might be useful if someone gets in your face, but the nostrils is going to be identifying feature of his face.

2. Sound. It’s OK but any radio or engine noise will overwhelm the mic on the side to drown out conversation. Also having the unit in the pocket can muffle the mic.
