PINAC will be incorporated into new photo site
After weeks of negotiations, I’ve signed a contract with a publishing company where I agreed to incorporate Photography is Not a Crime into a new photo site called Pixiq.
The good news is that I will be getting paid for my content.
The bad news is that PINAC has now turned into a job instead of just a hobby. Wait, that’s actually really good news. And it was never just a hobby. It’s been a calling.
So expect more blogging from me.
The changes should be coming within the next few days. Hopefully it will be a smooth transition.
For at least the next year, the duration of the contract, readers who log on to carlosmiller.com will be redirected to my blog on Pixiq.
Pixiq was launched this month by Sterling Publishing, a New York company that is owned by Barnes and Nobles. Sterling also publishes a line of photography books called Lark Books. Much of that content will be available on Pixiq.
Pixiq is striving to be a one stop site for all things relating to photography. Or as their slogan states: “The world’s top photographers, bloggers and technical experts – all in one place.”
In all honesty, it wasn’t an easy decision for me because I’m a little cynical and jaded when it comes to working with corporations. But I’ve spoken with the editors and I believe them when say they will give me complete editorial freedom.

Congrats, Carlos. If you can, try to keep the site clutter-free. Many corporate blogs are just overflowing with useless javascript and advertisements.
Great to hear! There’s nothing like doing what you were doing anyway (hobby, calling, etc.) and getting paid for it. Good luck with the new company!
Good luck with the new venture.
Congratulations, Carlos. I’m sure you thought through this quite a bit to reach your conclusion. Best of luck with it.

So … I’m guessing they wont be hosting it on GoDaddy ??

Congratulations! Much deserved. I look forward to the new home.
Congrats Carlos, well-deserved and earned, of course.
Advice: if you haven’t already, get the agreement in writing and have a media-and-IP lawyer review it, Carlos. These “Of course we will/won’t do X” verbal agreements have many ways of changing over time…
Courtacy requires you to send a “Thank You” card to the Miami cops who helped you get started on this path. Without their encouragement to study photography law and policy, you never would have found this opportunity…
Call me a cynic, but B&N is going to allow you to defy law-enforcement’s whim, under their umbrella? Sure they are.

Excellence has its rewards. May yours be many! Keep up the great work and the future is yours.
I remember when Carlos Miller was just a beer-drinkin’ guy in Miami with a website who had a camera and could spell good. Today, he’s a celeb! You go Carlos, you go, man
I know how hard you have work on your blog, and in your career, how many sleepless nigths you have, and how hard has been for you and me that time you were arrested with no justification. However I know that this is just a STEP UP for you
God bless you always , Your Mom
Aren’t you the slightest bit concerned? Now the police, mayors, US attorneys, and other ilk can call corporate executives about your blogging. I’ve been through it, the cops are tenacious b******s who never give up trying to wreck a life.
Will B&N still let us say “Fuck” in the comments?
Congrats Carlos! You deserve it man! :thumbs up:
I’m highly skeptical of this one man. Something doesn’t seem right. It might be all in good nature right now, but something doesn’t seem right. Good luck!
Congrats Carlos, but make sure you retain all rights to your domain name and are free to change it at any time after employment ends. Otherwise after a year they decide they no longer want you but want that traffic and you just lost your name.
You are going to be working under a corporate umbrella now, and it is going to mean a lot of editing and re-editing before it is allowed to be published. Verbal contracts are worth the paper they are printed on, keep that in mind.

What happens to the RSS feed? Will I need to resubscribe at a new URL?
“Aren’t you the slightest bit concerned? Now the police, mayors, US attorneys, and other ilk can call corporate executives about your blogging.”
YEP.
Here’s to hoping that doesn’t happen, or at the very least that the site owners don’t cave to the pressure.
But I’m dubious.
#13 (good spot) Has a good Point sir. As an old Man Who took up photog a few years back. I have not as of yet had the Problems some of the folks on your site have had. I love the heads up, the education, because I Keep my Camera Handy. Good Luck to you.
PS. C.Y.A.

Either it’s in the contract in which case you can expect to have it, or it’s not in which case you certainly will not.

I feel sad. Change is always difficult, but I’ll give it a go.
Congratulations Carlos, I hope everything works out okay for you.
Congrats and Good Luck Carlos. Keep fighting the good fight.
Take the money. Don’t care who owns it as long as the content is good. If it sucks it will go back as it was before… right?
“they will give me complete editorial freedom.”
Until some state attorney general or Dept of Homeland Security representative sends them a letter complaining that your site promotes dissent and/or terrorism. And then you’ll be told to STFU.
I am also voicing my concerns, and doubts about this move.
Editors will say anything to get you to sign on with them, but unless it’s in writing, you have no way to back up those claims.
As James said above, make sure you still own your domain name, and can redirect it back to WordPress, or GoDaddy, or your own server in your closet whenever you want.
Here are my two main concerns:
Your posts will be edited, while that could be good, it can be annoying and not allow you to express your opinions, or more specifically, say “Fuck those motherfucking asshat dumb shit buttfucking dickheads”
Most likely that will be edited down to a bunch of blanks, or taken out completely. And as someone who is advocating the 1st amendment, this is a compromise that is NOT ACCEPTABLE.
Also, your posts are already pretty direct, and personal, but totally legal. What happens when you piss the wrong politician off, and they call up corporate HQ, then you’re stuck in some bureaucratic battle with execs that don’t know shit about the company they run, but know that you pissed someone off, and need to be fired.
I hope all is well, and these things don’t happen, but I reserve the right to say “I told you so”
Seconded to the person asking about the RSS feed.
I’m not sure about the RSS feed, but I imagine that will be changed.
As for the other concerns, believe me when I say I had and still have those concerns.
The contract allows either party to terminate the agreement and if it doesn’t work out, I will simply move my blog back to its original site because I will still retain ownership of what I have written.
If it turns out I am getting censored or if the editing is heavy-handed, then I will terminate the contract.
But until or unless that happens, I will continue doing what I’ve been doing, only under a different look. The content will remain the same.
Their main concern is about obscenity and I’ve never made it a habit to post pornography nor do I get too obscene either.

Oh yea of little faith.
If there’s one thing I know – and if you’ve been even an occasional reader of PINAC you know this, too – is that there is no compromise in Carlos Miller.
He’s been arrested (TWICE!) for taking photos – his right – when he could have been submissive and walked away without incident (like we are taught in journalism school). But he stood up for his rights more than once, willing to pay the price.
He parted ways with NBCMiami (a prestigious corporate job), in part, because he was a maverick and wouldn’t give in.
And he’s done all this while being completely honest about his legal predicaments (lawyers did recommend remaining silent and that would have been the easy route – but this is Carlos).
And it’s because of his tenacity, honesty, arrogance, smarts and his heart that put this issue at the forefront of the mainstream media. After three years of hard work, the topic exploded and was featured on Nightline, MSNBC, the Washington Post, the New York Times.
I don’t see Carlos changing for Pixiq. But if there’s an issue with his content (and we know there will be) I hope his friends will support him when he quits or is asked to quit for telling the truth the way he, or a camera sees it.
Until then, this topic that is so much bigger than photography or videography will reach a larger international audience because Carlos will be able to devote more time to the topic. Imagine what he could do if this was a full-time job …

Congratulations, good sir! Keep fighting the good fight.
Be careful now when you enter the metrorail. Since you’re making money they may consider it “commercial”. Keep up the great work. We all support you and best of luck with your new ventures.
Hey, that’s great news, Carlos. Paid blogger – you’re living the dream!
Congratulations! You really deserve to get paid for your writing. Just be cautious, and make sure you have a lawyer represent you with this.
What happened? Waiting for your posts on Pixiq.
