Police Mistakenly Fire at Photojournalist in Iowa

Police in Iowa fired at a photojournalist who was pointing out the real suspect to them.

The real suspect - who was not even armed - was eventually tased and arrested for allegeldy throwing rocks through the windows of the KCCI news studios in Des Moines.

Suspect Jessie Parrish supposedly matched the description of KCCI photojournalist Spencer Vaughn, who was on the phone to dispatch when police pulled up.

Vaughn pointed towards Parrish while holding the phone to his ear, which caused Des Moines Police Officer Cody Grimes to fear for his life.

Grimes responded by shooting towards Vaughn, but missing. The bullet stuck a light pole instead.

Vaughn and Parrish are both white men with short, dark hair. And so is Grimes for that matter, judging by the pictures included in the Des Moines Register's article.

Grimes was placed on paid administrative leave while police investigate the matter.

I find that fact that the officer missed to be very funny. How bad of a shot do you have to be to miss a target that is looking for you? But again, how is this article relevant to the purpose of this site? Are you implying that Vaughn was fired upon because he was a photojournalist? What does his job have anything to do with what happened?

You also failed to mention this part:
"The initial description provided to police was a white male wearing a gray T-shirt and carrying a gun. As officers arrived, Vaughn was standing on a patio outside KCCI, holding a cell phone. He motioned to officers in an effort to point out Parish’s whereabouts. Vaughn, who is a white male and was wearing a gray T-shirt, matched the suspect’s description."

This is no excuse for the officer's actions, but it provides some context to what happened. Your article seems to have an underhanded agenda.

That's pretty standard for this site. If you want the real story, you are going to have to dig a lot deeper on your own.

Honestly if the suspect was reported to be carrying a pistol and this other guy matched the description while hopping around with a phone in his hands, this story makes more sense.

Is a "white male" with "gray t-shirt" who's alleged to have discharged a weapon nearly specific enough to discharge a firearm at someone upon arrival at the scene?

According to the US Census, Des Moines is 82.3% white. At 11pm, with the officer's own justification that "it's dark", it would be hard to say "gray t-shirt" is an effective identifier. Lots of people own shiny phones and hold them in their hands and lift them to their ears. Given that KCCI has a live news program that airs at 10pm, and the report that staff were in the building, other moving bodies than the suspects should have been expected. (Also, let's not forget that shots were "alleged" and not confirmed. The only person here who discharged a weapon at innocents was the peace officer, ironically.)

Your snarky reply to this scenario is cold and absurd.

There was nothing snarky about it. What you call "cold" I call looking at the situation honestly.

The simple reality is that there are many things going on when you respond to a call of a man with a gun. We don't know the exact lighting, actions of the man with the phone, or even how the whole thing went down. These situations unfold in the blink of an eye. You have the luxury of pulling up the demographics of Des Moines Iowa. The officer had to deal with things at a much faster pace than any armchair quarterback.

I will agree that it was a good thing the officer was a horrible shot though.

Thats why i never call the police.

I would rather have a broken window, than a bullet in the chest for standing on the sidewalk.

what kinda person pulls up and jumps out and fires a shot at someone before saying a word?.!

what an idiot-i would fire that guy.

If you read the linked article you will find that he did day a word. There is a lot more to the situation than is posted here. These posts are getting worster and worster.

Both photojournalist Spencer Vaughn and trouble maker Jessie Russell Arlo Parish look more intelligent than the dumb cop Cody Grimes.

Cop does something stupid, nobody hurt, gets placed on leave, no story. And no photography angle. If we run into a dry spell of police not spazzing over cameras, it would be better to fill it in with photo tips and your own shots. Like more bikini flag-football photos.

Hey, at least he only fired once... an L.A. Sheriff's deputy fired (and missed with) eight shots at a liquor store manager trying to point out a fleeing criminal.

Don't they, like, take marksmanship training?

Most cops are not in to guns and look upon them as just part of the uniform. Also most will never fire them ( other than on qualification day), so this is not surprising. TV to the side, cops do not run around getting in to gun fights

I remember reading a percentage around 75 never having to fire a gun during their career.

That reminds me of the liquor store owner that got fired at in California a few weeks ago. The deputy trainee shot eights time and never hit his target. What is worse, that he fired at an unarmed target or missed eight times?

While this is vaguely photo related, this is leaning more towards anti-cop blogging. I like your stuff man, but this is just a stretch. There are so many stories out there, you've said so yourself. Why cover sh*t like this? The cop already looks like an ass.

Carios:
How about cops chasing bikini footballers? Or footballers chasing cops in bikinis?

Any way I would like to see some of your work. I suspect you might be almost as great as I am.

Roger, the annoying.
