Protect Your Photos and Your Wallet

Over time you have accumulated hundreds of photos. Family shots, vacation pictures, and the fine arts shots that took so much time and effort. Add in the fact that ever since you switched from film to digital you have been taking more and more shots. Every time you look at your photo library you feel a little uneasy. You have heard the horror stories. In a few brief seconds a computer crash destroys all of your files. You know you should be backing up. There are just so many options that you don’t know where to start.

Over the years I have recovered files from hundreds of failed computers. I have also designed and built backup systems for clients of all sizes. My clients have ranged from the artist working from a home studio to Texas Tech University where we had to backup literally thousands of computers. It is safe to say that I have seen almost everything in regards to backup systems and data recovery.

When designing any security system you must first identify the threats and then build layers of defenses to protect against those threats. Data files are vulnerable to four possible threats. Operating system failure, storage medium failure, accidental deletion, and finally physical destruction.

In the interest of keeping this readable I will be splitting this series into two more posts. Next time I will talk about the threats that you face when trying to preserve your photos. I would be willing to bet that you might not have considered a couple of the things that can happen. In the final post I will discuss your options when designing a backup system. Finally I will cover how a properly designed backup system will save you money.
