Ray Flash! The Portable Ring Flash

ranracforcompare.jpg

ExpoImaging has introduced the Ray Flash a portable ring flash adapter for your hot-shoe flash unit. This is actually a fairly exciting new product from the team that also produces the ExpoDisc and ExpoAperture2.

Because we’ve been talking about Lighting Techniques these past couple of weeks I thought you guys would be interested in this product. A ring flash is a fantastic piece of equipment to own for a portable photographer. Before, you pretty much had to DIY a ring flash, but this new piece of gear would suit many portrait & wedding photographers well. You can get some really killer fashion portraits with a ring flash. It’s light weight, slim, and works well with the built in TTL. According to research, it will only kill your flash by one stop which is a breeze to adjust.

The announcement does not come without limitations. The price is a bit much for my taste, but that’s probably only because I haven’t had my hands on the Ray Flash. I have spent less on products that I’ve never used more than a handful of times, and spent more on products that I could never part with. At $300 you’re looking at a serious investment for a ring flash if you’re a hobbyist. If you’re a pro wedding or location portrait photographer the price for a portable ring flash probably isn’t that bad.

It only fits a couple of models of flash units so that really limits the target market.

  • Canon 580EX (MKI & MKII)
  • Nikon SB800

I think this would be a great piece of equipment for people who don’t mind dropping $300 bucks and happen to have the flashes that are compatible with the unit. It would be great to see a price drop and more compatibility in the future.

If you happen to get one I’d love to share your thoughts on this portable ring flash by Ray Flash with our readers.

Didn't knew it existed, but it's a bit expensive I think.

I bought one at ebay yesterday. Here in germany one of them costs 280euros, what is about 450USD at the moment. i bought it for 90 euros (150USD) so i thought ill give it a try. i thought about putting it in between of two salad bowls to get even more power and a even bigger ringlight, but ill see how it works first...

I also bought it, in Jakarta Indonesia the price is about US$327 at that time. I love to use it for portrait or model outdoor for fill in or againts the back light. However sometime I fill the result not so satisfied because I fill a bit miss focus or not sharp as if not using it. I am looking for other experience, maybe do you feel it or not.
Is it because of the focus assistance lamp that the position is excactly behind the ray flash so covered up the assistance lamp? I want to try to compare how about if I turn off the assistance lamp, and if the result will info in here again.

Also looking for your experience using this.
