Saturday Shout-Outs: Links We Love

In his post Imperfect Work: Blowing It On Purpose, Zack Arias experiments with technically blown exposure, focus, shutter speed, etc., to see if “imperfect” pictures capture the perfect mood or emotion. 

An anonymous photographer and graffiti artist (or “photograffeur,” as he calls himself) who goes by JR won TED’s annual prize, One Wish to Change the World and $100,000. The Parisian artist blends photography, graffiti, and installation art for his massive (illegal) works, which he displays in poverty-stricken areas and highly public places all over the world, usually with the help of some residents. Remember Lite-Brite, the electric toy that lights up an image created by pushing multicolored pegs into a black board? This stop-motion music video for David Crowder Band's song "SMS" uses 700,000 pegs to tell a love story.

Photographer Lyle Owerko turned his obsession with boomboxes into a book, The Boombox Project: The Machines, the Music, and the Urban Underground published this month. Though casette tapes seem a thing of the past, it's clear from Owerko's close-up portraits of vintage boomboxes and historical photos of people and their boomboxes that these cultural staples still hold significance.
